Brad!
Iris didn't know what to think about her life at that moment. While things at school were becoming easier and she was slowly understanding material and just buckling down on her studies, life outside of Hogwarts was becoming more and more hectic. First all the rubbish with the M.A.G.I.C. act and fretting over her father's blood status and how quickly it progressed to a ridiculous level. Now her father was going to be the next Minister and telling her that he wasn't actually her father. Her world, it seemed, was being turned upside down by the people surrounding her. The only bit of stability to things was Brad.

A good chunk of her holiday had been spent at his flat, something that pleased Iris quite a bit. So her showing up at his place wouldn't be entirely unexpected or out of the blue. She didn't know what to make of the news that her father had just dealt to her, but she knew that she didn't really want to think about it--at least not by herself. Thank Merlin for boyfriends.

Brad had worked Christmas Eve, Day and night, because he was single and had nothing else to do. Though, with being a trainee and having your two main training officers in transition into new jobs and the others adjusting to the new order of things, there wasn't much to do other than sort through whatever files were there to sort. Which Brad had done, because he was on duty and he would stick to that. But he'd made sure to make time for Iris, even if it was during off shifts and was mostly spent just hanging out. So when Iris apparated into his flat, Brad wasn't surprised. Well, he kind of was, because he was, because Brad had been napping on the couch with his cat and the popping noise caused him to sit upright and blink at her for a moment before realizing that she was standing there.

"Hey..." Brad said sleepily, moving his cat and patting the couch as he straightened up a little and made room for her on the sofa. "Hey are you okay?" he asked, looking concerned as he took in her appearance. "What's wrong?"

Iris moved to sit next to him, tucking her legs under her as she did so. "I'm--I'm okay," she said softly, watching Pouncey as he padded around the floor for a new place to rest. The poor cat, his nap being interrupted all on her account. "Just trying to--to adjust to things," she added, letting her head fall to rest on the back of the couch.

"I don't know if you've heard the news yet," she started, trying to figure out her exact wording of all this. He was in the auror department, after all, so it was very possible that they'd been told early that her father would become the next Minister but there was no way for Iris to know past bringing it up. "My father's been named the next minister," she said, turning her eye to him, trying to watch for any sort of non-verbal response to that. She would wait to inform him of the news that was truly bothering her. No need to overwhelm him with everything all at once.

"Oh yeah, I heard that," Brad rubbed his hair a little, causing it to stick up in the back, "Yeah Moody's taken his place and then umm, Booth and Dawlish are like leading stuff right now. Have you talked to him? Does he plan to send all boys who are dating his daughter to Azkaban?" Brad laughed lightly, scooting closer to Iris and resting his arm along the back of the couch. "Have you talked to him yet or is he like buried in work and everything yet?"

Iris laughed at his joke, shaking her head slowly. "No, I wouldn't let him do that," she said firmly, kissing him before letting her head fall to rest on his shoulder. "We have talked, actually. And--" She stopped herself, unsure of how to properly word her news. She didn't know what to say but--ugh, this was so bloody confusing.

"I don't think he's buried in work quite yet," she replied, "but it's only a matter of time." There was so much for him to do, such a mess for him to clean up.

"He did---there's some nasty family back story that he never really let me know about and. He told me about it and the like---" she stopped, feeling the tears well up in her eyes. The only reason she knew was because of the bloody job. If it weren't for that, would he ever have told her the truth? Were there other things he was hiding from her, things that she deserved to know?

Brad smoothed his hand down Iris' hair and scooted a little closer, worried as she started to look like she was going to cry. "Oh hey now, it's not that bad. Your dad is gonna be fine, he knows what he's doing. Don't worry, he's got the best aurors on his detail," Brad tried to soothe her worries, thinking she would be upset about her father being minister and therefore a bigger target than before. "He's gonna change stuff. Do you realize we haven't had a muggleborn minister, in like. Forever? That's got to be good right." He bit his lip and leaned in to give her a supportive kiss on the cheek, "Nasty family back story? Your dad, with a nasty back story? No way."

Why was he going on about--whatever. It did seem like a large accomplishment, her father being the first muggleborn Minister in some time. He honestly felt like one of the best picks for the spot, too. At least when it came to bringing some sense back to their world. She let out a slow sigh, "It's not all his fault but." Ugh, she didn't want to talk about it, because the more people she told, the more real it would feel and she just--wanted to cling to her childhood memory of her mother. Not knowing what she'd done, what she was had felt nice and--and now she didn't feel like she knew her mum at all and.

"My mum--she. She cheated on Da with--" she took in a deep, shaky breath, feeling the tears start to creep down her cheeks. "It doesn't matter but. He only told me because he didn't want someone else to do it or to hold it against him as blackmail or something or something, I don't know. But he's not--he's actually my---my uncle. And it--he's," she stopped herself, not sure where she was really trying to go with all this and she didn't want to confuse Brad too terribly.

"Your uncle? What?" Brad frowned, his brow furrowing as Iris talked, because what she was saying made no sense. Her mother slept with her uncle, making her father her uncle and her uncle her father? "So, Corner, he's biologically your uncle? But he's your dad. Like, your...dad. Woah, that....makes no sense. And he told you this because he didn't want you to find out through Rita fucking Skeeter, right? That makes sense, I guess. But, oh, well fuck that's kind of. Wow, are you okay?" That was a bit messed up. Brad patted Iris' back, not sure of how to comfort her.

"I--yeah, that's the gist of it," she said slowly, letting her body lean closer to him. "And I don't know how to really take all of this, I mean--he's just not my uncle because he's--but." She groaned, trying to not think too hard about all of this. "And now he's the Minister so he's probably going to have more to deal with, and it's not like people were too happy with the last one. He'll probably have a death threat every other week and--" Why did everyone she cared about have to be a public servant? She wouldn't have to worry if she could just--lock them all up in a broom cupboard somewhere for safekeeping.

"Things are just going to get worse before they get better. And--I mean, I know I'm still in school but what if something happens to you, or to Da or--" She wouldn't be able to do a blessed thing stuck at Hogwarts.

"Hogwarts is the best place for you. I mean, Dumbledore is there and you've got amazing professors, and you're safe there, okay. And like your dad will be safe. Most of the Aurors are totally cool and awesome and they'll protect him. I mean, when you get put on Minister detail its like. You do anything to protect the minister, he'll be really safe, okay?" Brad pulled Iris half into his lap and wrapped his arms around her. "And I'm just a trainee. I sit at a desk and pretend to be invisible right now. Stealth and Tracking training! Don't worry, the most I get to do is follow someone around Hogsmeade on Hogwarts weekends. So yeah, there's nothing to be worried about." Except that was the biggest understatement ever, but he sounded sure and he really wanted to make Iris feel comfortable.

"But someday you'll move up from being a trainee. Don't tell me that it's the safest job in the world, because I know good and well that it's not," she said, trying not to become too cross over his reassurance. Corner had been an Auror her entire life, she knew very well what the job demanded, and just how close her father had come to serious injury, even death. She kissed him as the wheels in her brain started to turn. It was a dangerous job, and she knew that. But--well, she really wanted to get into the department come July and what then? If she and Brad were with each other, and they both made a living as Aurors, how soon would it be before one of them ended up seriously injured or dead or--she sighed softly as she burrowed her head into his chest.

What if something happened to one of them before they really had a chance to live and experience everything life had to offer?

"Not until June. Your dad'll have this all figured out before then though. And I've got some of the best trainers. Nothing is gonna happen to me just yet, you can't go through life worrying about that stuff okay." Even though Brad was worried about some of that, he had to have faith in his trainers and the Ministry that he would be safe and that his friends would stay safe. If he had it his way, he would bottle all his friends up and put them in bubble-wrap and hide them away, but life didn't really work that way.

"Well, I know that I can't just worry constantly but. There's so much that I want to do and if something happened to you or--or to dad, I don't know what I would do." She wanted to do something--she didn't know what just yet, but something.

"Don't you ever worry that--you'll not get to experience everything you want to because of--something that happens because of work?" She was trying very hard to not actually say the dead in any form.

"Um, no not really. I mean, I've already put my parents into hiding and stuff. I'm all in this for all of it. I can't worry about what if or what doesn't happen. I just have to make sure that I make this world the best it can be for everyone." Brad shifted, rubbing Iris' knee a little, "My dad was a hit-wizard, did you know? I didn't. I mean, I only knew him for a little while, my mom never told me how he died. He died making this world a better place. What else can I ask of myself?"

Iris Conway had decided in her mind that she wanted to do something important, something big. It was all good and well to sign up for something to make the world a better place (and she didn't see it as a silly reason to get into a profession, that was why she wanted to become an auror after all), but there were so many things in life that she wanted to experience. She wanted to get married, she wanted to have children, she wanted to grow old and have grandkids someday. And even if she didn't get all of that, she wanted to at least take a shot at it.

She was sick and tired of people telling her that Hogwarts was this safe haven that it really wasn't. James Potter and Frank Longbottom were kidnapped when they were in school, hell even she got lifted on the bloody Express. It was certainly a lot safer than the rest of the world, but it wasn't this little bubble that her father and Brad could send her off to where everything would be just brilliant.

"Let's go to Paris."

"Paris? Like...Paris in France? French Paris?" Brad asked, stupidly, blinking at Iris. It was a stupid question, but he was a bit confused, because she had just been talking about her fath- un- the Minister and now she was talking about going to Paris? "Um, I suppose, sure. Let's go. I could probably get some time off over Easter. Or we could do it this summer. As like a celebration."

"Yes, Paris in France," she replied with a smile. "But...tonight. Let's go tonight." She wanted to do something, just--get away from England, stop thinking about what had happened today with her father. She wanted to live or--or do something crazy.

"I've always wanted to go, and I've heard the Eiffel Tower always looks so pretty at Christmas time." She leaned in for a quick kiss. Paris would be so romantic, it would be something different and exciting. Maybe even the perfect place for the 'something important' she was itching to do.
