[Emmeline]
He didn't know what he was doing.

Well, okay he did. But he still didn't know why he was doing it. The whole... Emmeline Thing.

She had Dearborn now, and as much as he hated it, she seemed to (for reasons beyond him) actually like the jerk. Which was okay, really, because why should he get in the way of that? Except that he couldn't help but be obnoxious and try to do it anyway--for as long as they'd been broken up and all the crap they'd gone through at the end of their relationship, Ben still couldn't help but in some part of his mind think of her as his. They'd dated for too long and he still liked her too much for him to just switch that off, even though she obviously had and the whole thing was now making him look pathetic.

So why was he even there, was the question.

Conveniently, it had just walked through the door of the café, stopping him from getting up right then and leaving to rethink his attitude. Ben grimaced, but as Emmeline approached the table he hid it under a hopefully convincing smile. One look at her, and he should have run while he had the chance. This was why he liked being at Hogwarts in the first place. Talking to her in the journals was one thing, but seeing her was a whole other tidal wave of frustration--at himself, and at her for liking that disgusting Slytherin so much.

"I, ah--didn't know what you'd want to drink, so I didn't order anything yet."

Anneliese had told her that this was a very bad idea. Just bad, bad idea Emmeline, bad, but really. They were adults! It wasn't as if she hadn't talked to Ben since their breakup and his return from the muggle world, it wasn't as if he hadn't been around her with the two boyfriends she's had since then (Merlin, she sounded like such a bloody tart--), it wasn't as if she'd actually thought about him in that way in any recent time, it--

Well, she couldn't exactly stop herself from blushing at things he said, that was a natural human body response, she had no control over that.

"That's all right, I'll just take a butterbeer or, whatever you're going to have." Emmeline slid into the chair across from Ben and grinned, pulling off her scarf from around her neck, "How's Hogwarts, Professor? When's your next class?"

Ben waved over the waitress and placed their drink order, then turned back to Emmeline. Christ almighty--for about the millionth time today, the only words running through his head were 'what is your problem?' This whole torturing himself thing could not be healthy.

Ben felt a breath of relief when she decided to bring up Hogwarts--instead of, you know, things like the way he had acted earlier in the journals. This was definitely a safe topic, and the thought of his job actually brought a genuine smile to his face. "I've got to be back in an hour, but---it's good," he said. "Most of the kids are good for me, but I guess I like to think I'm a semi-cool professor to have. Mostly we just play sports, I mean--there's not much to teach Muggleborns about Muggle Studies, so we get to fool around a lot."

As the butterbeers came to the table, he grabbed his and took a long drink before continuing. "And I guess I feel like I can connect with them. What they're going through, the persecution? I like to think maybe the fact that I'm there helps a little in one way or another."

Emmeline nodded along, agreeing and quite impressed with Ben's musings on his life at Hogwarts. For someone who hadn't finished his education there, he did seem to be enjoying it. And, she was glad. Ben didn't finish his Hogwarts experience because of terrible outside circumstances, and it wasn't every day someone got the chance to go back.

"I didn't even think about that, Muggleborns and...muggle studies," she shrugged with a light laugh, keeping her hands wrapped around the glass. "But that's good, you and the rest of the...hip professors, it's a completely different atmosphere, I'd imagine.. I don't know how thrilled I would have been to have Black and Potter in charge of my classes, but..."

She looked up and grinned. If she had James Potter and Sirius as her professors, she would have ended walking into the Great Lake for the Giant Squid's lunch. Nope. Good timing on her part.

"Oh!" she lifted her hands and clapped them together once, "You need to tell me what you know, that I don't. Which I still don't believe, but."
