The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

"Uh, excuse me," Aland said, his eyes widening and tripping over himself to step away. Since when did women just come up to him and kiss him on the cheek that weren't Prisca? He quickly looked around to see if Prisca was watching, because he wouldn't put it past her to do something like this, hire a girl for him or something. Even Grail might've done it.

Aland took a step back and gave the woman a wary look. "I - what? Who are you? What are you doing? Who paid you? I don't need someone - I've, I'm seeing someone." That was an understatement, though Aland definitely couldn't say who, and why they weren't here. He would just lie. Like usual.

Roderick's lips twitched into a wider grin when Aland backed off. Well, at least he knew that the other man wasn't cheating on him with random women who came up to him and kissed him on the cheek. That was pleasing.

He blinked innocently and took another step forward to rest his hand on Aland's arm, leaning in close to him. No need to have someone overhearing what he was about to say. "Yes, I'm aware of that. And I tried to get things ready on time for that wedding, Aland, but this was the best I could do." He curled one hand up to brush over the back of Aland's neck (something that he was fond of doing no matter what gender he was portraying). "But for the purposes of this evening, you probably shouldn't call me Roderick."

Aland froze completely when she mentioned Roderick's name. What- no that wasn't. How did she know him? About them? Aland swallowed hard, but calmly reached up and grabbed her arm, yanking it off his neck and holding it tightly - enough to cause a little pain, but nothing she could cry over. "How do you know? Who sent you? My father? What do you want?" Money, she probably wanted money. Everyone wanted money. Aland's heart was beating fast and - how could he be so stupid? Someone knew. Other than Darren, who wouldn't ever tell.

And he frowned at the other man. "Oi, you realize I can't do anything with that wrist if you bruise it." He shifted slightly, "And you should know by now that I want you. That's about it, really." Roderick furrowed his brows a little more.

"I sent myself. Like I said -- I felt badly about not being able to make it to the wedding."

No, it couldn't be- "You're a woman." And a pretty one, but, why would Roderick do this; this was way far beyond any sort of weird gay things that Aland could chalk it up to. His heart was still beating fast, and he glanced around the room to make sure no one was paying attention to them.

"Can you think of a better way for me to be inconspicuous?" At least ... a way he could be inconspicuous and still be able to make out in a public place.

"Are you going to let go of my arm?" He smiled very faintly, making sure that he kept his gaze on Aland's steadily. That was one creepy habit that he had trouble shaking no matter what body he was in.

Aland reluctantly let go of the woman's arm - he was a little too shocked by everything for it to really sink in. "But you're a woman." His mind really couldn't wrap around that bit. Roderick. His...male lover was now female. Was he supposed to feel weird about this? If he was, Aland was certainly failing. "In heels."

"Well, Polyjuice will do that." He slipped his arm around Aland's waist, glancing out at the rest of the party.

"I had figured that it was the easiest solution to our problem." The problem of going out in public, at least. If they had other problems, Roderick was patently ignoring them for now.
