The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

Tristan has yet to grow up. He shot her a curious glance when she asked what team he was on, though, as if it should have been obvious from his mentioning the Tornadoes at all. "Oh, you wound me! Surely you must know that the Catapults and the Tornadoes have a long-standing feud."

Aside from the fact that the coach was fucking one of the Tornadoes players. The team had managed to completely avoid speaking about that fact ... ever. He grinned just a little, lifting his mask for a moment to give her a wink.

"Oh, right."

Psyke's face scrunched into one of disgust as she recalled all the rants Wendy had made against the offending Catapults, and yadda yadda yadda. She hated the Catapults on principle, because that's what you did for your friends, but Psyke could never really understand rivalries.

Seriously. She was friends with plenty of Slytherins and hated loads of Gryffindors. Maybe if people just learned to focus on themselves a bit more, then these silly rivalries would cease to exist.

"I'm supposed to hate you, then," she said with a sigh and a roll of her eyes, though now that he'd revealed himself she did recognize his face from the magazines (of course she had to check to see if she was in any) "Unless you can give me one good reason why the Catapults don't suck."

Tristan pulled a face this time, probably made more ridiculous by the mask. That had to mean that she was friends with one of the Tornadoes - and okay, maybe they kept up the rivalry mostly because the papers loved it, but also because their fans would probably throw a tantrum if the traditional rivalry were lost. He did know about rivalries, though, so it was easy to keep it up -- being in a family of competitive Quidditch-buffs made that all too easy.

"Let's be honest now, love. Could you ever really hate this face?" Even partially obscured by a mask? Naaaaaaaaw.

Psyke stared up at him with a scrutinizing gaze, trying to figure out which Catapult this was. Like, she knew his face, and she was now starting to recognize his voice from various events, but still. It felt like everyone and their mother was a quidditch player these days and she could only tell apart like, Wendy and Finn. Usually. Wendy got pretty fierce on the field.

Finally, she remembered something about quidditch and the Catapults, and Psyke stood up with her hand on her hip and a triumphant smirk.

"So, are you the pouf?"

...seriously?

Just because he was an attractive bloke on a Quidditch team, "No. A hundred thousand times no." He crossed his arms over his chest, only narrowly resisting the urge to pout at her. Really?

He didn't look anything like Griffith. That was just ... insulting! But rather than being an immature prat about it, he offered her his hand with an arched brow.

"Am I going to have to dance with a pretty lady to prove myself, though? I hope you're volunteering."

Well. She never had been able to resist making Harper jealous. Maybe he would even cut in and whisk her off. Until then, she'd dance with the quidditch bloke (because what girl didn't dance with the quidditch bloke? Stupid girls, that's who), or at least until she spotted her husband. Who was probably stuffing his face with that cheese he liked.

And now she kind of wanted that cheese too, but. There was a hand being offered.

Psyke's nose tilted up once more as she took his hand, and she stood, letting out a breath in the form of a slightly high-pitched sigh. "If you insist."

"I assure you that you won't regret it." Tristan could be painfully charming when he wanted to be, after all -- despite the fact that he was a Quidditch player, he had something of a White Knight complex and Psyke was practically a damsel in distress without a husband, right?

Sure. He led her to the dance floor with a slight grin. "So, do I get your name ... or am I simply left wanting for the rest of the evening?"
