The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

Right, it had been Greta who had tried so very half-heartedly to get him to come to the party. He'd nearly forgotten -- and yes, the suit was rather ridiculous, but it was the only thing that he'd really been able to dig out of his closet on such short notice.

He did not have the funds to buy a new suit just for tonight, and he wasn't cheap enough to wear his outfit once and return it.

"Oh, absolutely," although his face was completely deadpan. "Being alone at a party is fantastic, but I'm sure you'll figure that out soon enough." Considering what had transpired with the bloke he imagined had been her date.

Ugh. "The guy I've been seeing for two months decides to bring the other girl he's been seeing for the past two months to the same dance as he was bringing me." She snorted. "He was apparently too dim-witted to think of what would happen if we found out."

Greta looked at Walden with a raised eyebrow. "So, you didn't manage to con anyone into letting you escort them?"

Walden blinked when she spoke. Well, he hadn't been expecting that much of a sob story. She wasn't lying, though, he was fairly sure of that. Her raised eyebrow was answered with one of his own.

"Even I don't have that much skill, Catchlove." And if it was just a touch self-deprecating ... well. Could he really be blamed?

"You know, being that I just got dumped and you're already dateless, you should probably ask me to dance right about now," she said, looking at him expectantly.

The sad thing was, she really couldn't blame this on just having dumped someone, because Greta was usually obnoxiously forward in this fashion.

And it would have to be a pretty interesting experience to see Walden Macnair start dancing.

"You just want me to make a fool of myself, don't you?"

He eyed her for a moment, though, and took her hand with a slight smirk and a shake of his head. Little did she know that he was secretly a dancing fiend.

...yeah right.

"If it's any consolation to you," she said, following behind him with a grin, "it won't just be you who looks like a complete idiot."

This night might just hold a lot more promise than she'd originally thought.

He knew that she was friends with Merridew.

And as much as he hated the other boy -- well, he knew that Antonin was here, and damned if the other man wasn't going to get an eyeful. He rested a hand on her hip once they got to the dance floor.

"Great. A pair of idiots, then."

"I think in situations like these, it's infinitely preferable to being an idiot completely by yourself." Greta smirked as she eyed his suit. "Which, let me tell you, you might be able to do very well in that suit."

Okay, sure, he cleaned up nice and all, but really, that suit. It took you a moment to realize that the male wearing it made it look a lot less ridiculous than when you were just concentrating on the suit itself.

She raised her eyebrows minutely at the hand placed snugly on her hip, but just kept smirking as they started moving in rhythm to the music.

"Mmm, right." He wasn't sure about that, but he'd learned long ago that you got much more from keeping your mouth shut when it suited you to than from opening it and making a damned fool of yourself.

Walden noted the raised brows, but left his hand where it was -- he wanted it to be there, damnit! "And what's wrong with my suit? It's supposed to be a costume party." This suit? Definitely not Walden.

At all.

"Nothing," she told him, smiling sweetly, "your suit is, truly, absolute perfection."

Okay, perhaps in a fit of temporary insanity and violently wishing painful death upon Tilden Toots, she might have moved rather close to Walden and she might not have minded the hand on her hip. But, really, she wasn't sure of anything definite.

"In other news, besides the wonder that is your costume, I haven't heard much about what you're doing now that we've left school."

Walden almost lied about what he was doing -- but working at the Ministry was respectable even in an entry-level position, wasn't it? No matter what he did outside of work. He couldn't very well tell her 'oh, well, I spend a lot of my time trying to kill Ralph Merridew', now could he?

Probably not the best strategy, and no matter how much of a social misfit he was ... he knew that much, at least. So he merely shrugged, letting her move closer and adjusting himself accordingly, "Working at the ministry. Not a terribly important position, but I'm sure that will come in time."

Preferably some sort of job where he could harm something or someone legally. He was too much of a coward to try for the Aurors program, but they had executionary programmes in the Ministry for animals, at least.

"Hmmm, you prestigious Slytherin boys and your aspiring entry-level Ministry positions," Greta laughed. "It must be because of that "ambition" nonsense that makes you such prized candidates for your House

She would be looking forward to the day where she could actually refer to herself as a journalist, rather than "intern" to the end of that sentence. Of course, there was always the option of branching out into the Muggle world, but she honestly had little interest in that. Maybe, if things really didn't pan out...

But anyway. "It certainly beats being an intern for the Prophet. I don't even know why they recruit them, there certainly isn't much for us to do."

"Well, someone has to get the real writers coffee." And that had come out before he'd meant it to. Oops. "Er, you know. Among other important tasks that I'm sure that you do."

It wasn't like he did much more than that anyway in his 'entry-level position'. He shrugged faintly and flashed her what he hoped was a relatively charming smile.

She snorted. "I'd argue with you, if you were wrong. But who knows! It's not like investigative journalism has that many staff members, anyway. I bet they'll just itching for me to start writing for them soon."

Well, that might have been a lie, because she wasn't sure. But... well, he didn't have to know, did he?

"I hope you realize at some point, Mister Macnair, that you have a recently single and very vulnerable girl in your arms. If you were planning on taking advantage of that, your window of opportunity is closing," Greta informed him with a poorly disguised grin.

"Is this the part where we go and snog in the hallways?" Because he'd never actually done that when he was going to school, so he supposed that now would be as good a time as any to start.

He grinned just a little, though, and let out a half-laugh. "You just have to find something to wow them with."

Hmm.

"Well," she said, eyebrows raising slightly as she tilted her head, "we are newly graduated, back at our old school. It would be like a disservice to not do a bit of flagrant rule-breaking while we were here."

Because honestly, Greta kind of missed being a bit scandalous around Hogwarts. Well, she really just missed Hogwarts. And now was as good a time as any to be extremely brazen, was it not?

He hadn't actually thought she was going to answer with that. He blinked, brow arched, and then ... well, nodded. "That's certainly true. I wouldn't want to do a disservice to the school that did so much for us."

Riiight. All Walden knew? Was that he was going to be making out in the hallway and Antonin couldn't make fun of him for that, could he? He started to head toward the exit of the Great Hall, trying to hide his ... excitement.
