The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

Delana leaned against the wall, near the entrance. She slipped her right foot out of a high heel, wincing slightly and wriggling her toes about. Owww, those things bloody hurt! Her mask, it was elaborate, all feathers and pretty dangly things; she was in love with it, and had to resist the urge to take it off so she could gaze at it. Although the point of the mask, and this ball, was to not recognize the person talking to you, people had already come up to her. It was the hair, of course. It was always the hair.

She took a sip from the fruity punch she had procured from the table over yonder and observed the dance floor with interest. She had already seen her big brother and Dorcas, whom she nearly didn't recognized, because well, Dorcas was all dressed up! The Auror looked stunning when all dolled up, Delana made a mental note to tell Derek to pass on that message to Dorcas later. She only felt slightly disappointed that there were less boys offering to escort her to the ball than she had expected; of course, there was Heathcliff, but really, he was Heathcliff. So she had decided to go stag and play the field. Who knew so many Ministry workers were so young and cute! Of course, she had to check over her shoulder for Derek when she flirted with them, per usual.

She readjusted her mask and almost missed the person sidling up next to her. She turned to the girl and gave her a big grin. "Rosie!" she exclaimed warmly, to make herself heard over the music and the noise. "Where'd your dashing date run off to?"

Rosie had arrived with her date, who looked dashing as always. Even though it wasn't really a date, it still made her feel good because she was actually with a boy and not alone! The poor girl was ignorant of boys, she'd never even been kissed yet and she was 17 years old, sadly, so she knew she messed horribly throughout the night, making a fool of herself once in a while (which she honestly didn't mean to do!). Her heels weren't all that high, so her feet didn't hurt too terribly, even though she was barely accustomed to them. Her mask was just simple; white with a few beads and that was it. Nothing elaborate or too over the top or too non-Rosamund like.

Regardless, though, she was enjoying herself, actually! She was quite proud that she was actually having fun, dancing and talking and just letting go for once. Too bad balls didn't come all the time, she'd have more fun! Not that she wasn't fun, but it was easier to be fun here. After her date had wandered off (to which she really wasn't surprised), she looked around the room and spotted her best friend off in the corner. She knew it was Delana because of the hair, for one, and the mask. That mask screamed her, basically, so she walked up to her, quietly and just stood there for a second before she was noticed, and she smiled. "He left me!" she said, just as loudly because damn that music! "He must have wandered off to get something or something, either way." A nonchalant shrugged followed.

Delana grinned. "That's alright, he'll come back sooner or later," she said confidently, looping arms with her best friend. "Although I am glad that we found each other!" She debated whether or not to leave her shoes in a hidden corner of the room where she could later pick them up, as the longer her feet were in them, they were exponentially aching. But alas, this was a classy affair, and classy shoes were part of the classy attire.

"Let's get some punch!" Delana saw some of the older, non-Hogwarts adults stumble around, and she knew that there was definitely alcohol afloat. Although she generally didn't like drinking, a little to get buzzed wasn't too bad, right?

"Of course he will," she agreed with a nod, trying to think positive and not too negatively. After all, best friends didn't lie! Or... that bad, at least. "Me too! Are you having fun? Being all stag cool and all?" It was ironic that Rosie had a date, yet her beautiful best friend didn't! How strange things really were.

Nodding in agreement, she thought nothing of the fact that alcohol might be around. Of course she noticed the adults, but alcohol? She didn't think they'd be that stupid to bring some into the school! Obviously she was naive and thought entirely too highly of the adult wizarding world. At least if the punch was spiked, it would be amusing to see her like that.
