The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

Lydia Proudfoot had opted for a skirt a little shorter than she had first anticipated for the ball, if only because she knew it would draw more attention to her fabulous legs. There was nothing wrong with wanting to do that! Besides, she took great joy in watching Healer Smethwyck's eyes get as wide as saucers. There was also the fact that she felt that she was at least indirectly required to wear house colours whether she was in Slytherin still or not -- and the dramatic mask went well with the outfit she'd picked out.

She tugged insistently on Smeth's arm, glancing over to Stefana. The girl had wanted to wear a hideous white ... sheet, but Lydia had managed to convince her that a racier number would be much more fitting. All the more shocking to Smeth when he had answered her door and she had announced to him that she'd found him a second date -- not an alternate date, but a woman for his other arm.

There had certainly been comments about busy hands. The evening was (hopefully) going to shape up to be most interesting.

So was it her fault that Stefana thought this was a perfectly appropriate dress? She had been so delighted when she bought it, for she thought it was the sweetest thing she had ever seen. However, when she went over to Lydia's that evening, the other woman had stared her incredulously, marched her to her large closet and picked something out. Stefana tried to protest, as this new getup was entirely too racy, but Lydia would not hear anything of it. After sitting the blonde down and redoing her makeup, Stefana had to concede that maybe she did look alright. Maybe.

It had been funny when they opened the door when Healer Smethwyck arrived, and even funnier to see his reaction. First his those adorable green eyes of his grew round, then his mouth dropped open. Stefana had to admit, she had enjoyed his reaction more than she should have. Also, she had drank more "special" punch than she should have; well, Lydia kept passing her cup after cup, after all! She arched a brow and looked around; Healer Smethwyck had seemed to disappear. Hmm. Had they lost their other date?

It certainly was her fault that she thought her bedsheets were an appropriate dress. Although the Healer's reaction had been reasonably entertaining, the way that Stefana was drinking whatever Lydia passed her way was equally so. And now that Smethwyck had deemed it all right to abandon the two of them ... well, felt no guilt in lubricating her one remaining date.

"I do believe you are rather intoxicated, my dear." Which did not stop her from passing Stefana another cup of punch. She arched her brow from the spot at the table that they had claimed.

"What?!" Stefana protested, much too loudly. Well, she had to speak loudly, right? The music was very loud! She readjusted her mask and took a sip of the tasty punch Lydia passed her. It was really good. Really, really good. She hardly remembered punch being this delicious at a Hogwarts function when she was a student.

"I don't drink!" she said, wrinkling her nose at the thought. The only time she had drank was at a Ministry party with Eliot, and the firewhisky she had tried was so nasty that she couldn't finish the cup. In fact, the thought of Stefana being drunk was so silly that she couldn't help but giggle a bit at it.

Ah, so that explained it. It wasn't as if Lydia had expressly told Stefana that the punch they were drinking was alcoholic, but it wasn't as if she had asked, anyway, and it was a fair assumption that at a party there would be drinks to make the adults rather giddy.

She smirked just a little more widely, reaching over to give the other woman's arm a gentle pat.

"Ah, how silly a thing for me to forget. I am so very glad you reminded me just now." She took a slow sip of her own punch. Glass number two, compared to ... however many her 'date' had ingested. Not that she was attempting to make Stefana pliant via alcohol consumption...

"Do you think we should dance?" Stefana wondered. Her eyes wandered to the dance floor, where there was a really good, upbeat song playing, the name of which escaped her. Names of things were escaping her quite frequently now, for some reason. Because she was not intoxicated. That was just silly.

She stood up, wobbling slightly. It was the insane high heels that Lydia lent her, it had to be, and extended a hand to Lydia. "I mean, after all, our date did so rudely leave us."

"I think that is a splendid idea, love." She watched Stefana stand up and once she was sure that the other woman wasn't going to pass out at the drop of a pin, Lydia did the same.

She took the other woman's hands and started to coax her toward the dance floor, fully planning on being completely and utterly inappropriate as soon as possible. What were parties for if not stretching social boundaries?
