Radio Play: Metal Bits
EDIT: This is a side thing. This is not replacing threads. It is for fun and on the side. And I got confused with what Vi and I talked about, so I took that bit about the voting out.

I know while Scribbld was down I told people about this on Instant Messenger, but I thought I'd make an official post too to tell those who don't appear on IM and whatnot.

Earlier, I wrote, directed, and edited a Girl Genius style radio play that I called 'Metal Bits'. Here is a link to the download. And here is a link to the script I gave everyone, but if you listen carefully there was a good deal of ad-liping by the end. The play has three parts and is just shy of 21 minutes long in total length.

I know I did a verbal disclaimer at the beginning, but I thought I would remind everyone here that this is a complete unprofessional production. None of us are real actors, so don't think this is going to be extremely nice quality anything.

Here, if you are curious, is a cast list (in order by appearance):
Narrator - 'Liztor' (hopefully Riddick-mun)
Agatha Heterodyne - Shay (Agatha-mun)
The Doctor - Melissa (Doctor-mun)
Sena Kobayakawa - Amy (Sena-mun)
Haruhi Fujioka - 'Liztor'
Person (or Heartless) - 'Claire' (not involved with the RP)
Shadow Link - 'Liztor'
Sound effects - 'Claire'

Also, its not mentioned verbally, but Sena-mun (who was playing Sena) was not there in person. She had her voice beamed live-time over the internet via voice chat. In hindsight I observed that I should have moved the microphone closer to the computer speakers so that she wouldn't have had to have her voice amplified and be competing with paper shifting noises. Either way, her voice being so crappy comes from the fact it came out of a computer speaker and was too far from the microphone.

Don't worry, I have developed several solutions for this so that I can do distance voices more successfully in the future.

Another thing is that I am writing two more plays. You don't have to audition if you want your characters to play a part in one of these productions nor do you actually have to act. Your characters can participate without your voice in the thing. I'm not trying to exclude people without microphones or those that are deaf if they want to enjoy the scripts and see what people are saying. In Metal Bits Haruhi Fujioka and Shadow Link were acted by Liztor, our narrator, not by their mun (since their mun lives in another state and doesn't have a microphone). I can arrange another real life friend of mine to come in and do the acting for you.

What I will need your help with, should you choose to participate, is editing your character's lines. What I did for the first play and will be doing for one of the second plays, is that I wrote the script then had the muns come back and edit and correct all of the lines until they were in character to their satisfactory. Once everyone had done this, I read the entire thing outloud and edited a few things to make them a little easier to say. After that the muns came in for another in character checking once over and the script was agreed as offical. The advantage of this method is things can be done one your time and don't require a lot of work on your part. The disadvantage is that is does take several days and does involve a lot of editing and harrassing of people on my end.

The other second play will be written in a style Jackie suggested (being a nerd I am comparing the two methods to see which is better). The second method will be getting all of the actors together in a group chat, telling them what the plot is and having them act out their part. This method is nice because, therodically it involves less editing from all of the muns (except myself). And by except myself I mean that I have to transcribe the chat into a script and clean up instant messenger grammar and then make lines more sayable. I might have to remove things that get extremely off topic and I might have to adjust things so that the entire plot flows together. Then I will have the muns give it a once over and check for a final in characterness. The disadvantage for this method is that it does involve a little more work on my part and it involves scheduling a time when everyone involved is online. That, of course, becomes a bigger problem the more people that are involved.

Right now I've written the entire first draft script of the first of the second plays. So that one has a set cast at this point, well sort of set cast. We have a scene with Luffy and Sanji and I was wondering if the other Straw Hat pirates would like to participate in that scene.

As for the rest of the cast it is as follows (in order of apperance):
Narrator
Vio
Link
Tohru Honda
Midna
Luffy
Sanji
(Nami?)
(Zoro?)
Lelouch
Konata
Shadow Link

Despite the larger cast, this play will be shorter than Metal Bits since it only has two acts.

The other play is still in the works enough I don't have a defined cast or plot outline yet. So if you aren't included in the above cast list, you are welcome to reply here or IM if you want your characters (or yourself) to have a part in the other production.

I don't get this so what I don't get this we're not doing threads anymore you're all doing radio plays or something? :| This isn't what I signed up for. And I don't have a mic or anything.

No no, we're still doing threads. This thing is one the side completely. You don't have to do it.

Uh well really I thought you were doing this for fun and not as an RP canon thing. My thought is I'd like to leave the Kingdom Hearts canon as it is because it really sort of defeats the purpose.

Sweetie, you can't make people vote if this is roleplay canon. Us mods already pretty much said no to it.

AND PLEASE PLEASE PEOPLE ARE CONFUSED NOW. Note on the top that this is a just-for-fun-side-thingy and not replacing threads or anything.

Yes this is coming from the canon-Nazi over here, but I'd like to stamp a big NO over this for the heartless thing. This is a Kingdom Hearts based roleplay so while we can bend some canons a tiny-tiny-tiny-tiny-tiny bit to suit the needs of things (Like making up little details in the story that never were mentioned to suit why the hell your character has an addiction to aspirin/knows a certain book/has this as their favorite color/Why Cloud was in Kingdom Hearts AND Final Fantasy 7) we can never ever ever ruin the Kingdom Hearts canon. Ever. I will cry if people do. :[

The other plays you wrote might work being roleplay-canon if they don't make up crap about heartless and butcher the hell out of things. Right now it's just a side-spinoff-funthingy okay~?

OH AND UMMM... I didn't approve Konata and Lelouch being in it yet? I know you told me you wanted them but I kinda was going to ask what you wanted to do with them first before giving the okay to that? ^^;; Make sure I gave total confimation first before writing your scripts. I don't want to be like NO NEVER DO THAT WITH LELOUCH EVA >| and then you'd have to rewrite the entire thing.

I also wanna note that there's a lot of people that probably can't participate in the plays? Like I mean... not everyone has a microphone here/is good at speaking clearly. And I mean some people probably can't listen to them too. ^^;; So don't be let down if even though the next play turns out SUPER-SPECIAL-AWESOME if it still isn't considered roleplay-canon.

I'm not let down. And as I said before, I can get someone else to do the voice so their characters can still participate. And yes, I will edit that right away. I didn't realize I wasn't clear.

Yeah I know but like I know I personally am totally against someone else portraying my guys (Unless you managed to get Johnny Young Basch to do the voice for Lelouch in your play I'd totally approve that) but yeah people might still want to be included but don't have a microphone and totally hate the idea of actors being their character like themselves..... Especially people not involved with the roleplay in the first place. Nobody knows who Claire is I mean how would we know they'd do a good job? ^^;;

Actually I have the arranged actor record some of their lines and send them to the mun to check voice ICness. I didn't write that up there because its kind of a special arrangement. But that's what happened with the Haruhi-Shadow Link case.

Jackie I love you hon, but I think you're over-thinking this a little bit. I'm doing what I can to not shut people out and having every little tiny detail nit-picked isn't really appreciated because the whole point of this is to have fun.

What? I'm making perfect sense here and stating reasonable facts. Just because you do great on a quiz doesn't mean you'll do great on a test, ya know? :/ I don't trust strangers not involved in the roleplay acting out a role that's supposed to be mine and I'm sure most people feel the same with their own people so I'm pointing it out.

Maybe I am over thinking it but I do that soo... Yeah. I'm sure it doesn't matter since anybody not-cool would just not be in it.

Maximum fun comes from people that know the inside jokes though? Yeaaaah. Okay. I'm just going over there now ---->

I'm deaf :( I can't participate at all. Do all these radio plays have to be canon because now I can't be involved in what sounds like you want to make into an RP event thing.

Mod's I don't want to be a fun killjoy with my disability but yeah I'd agree with the above making this like a spin off fun thing you all would post in the crack comm. (Not saying it would have to be crack or anything.) I just ask because I mean I like to read other threads and know what's going on but if I have to download and listen to certain ones I'm at a strict loss.

Also I don't know if my input is valid but I would have to stamp a big NO on changing around the canon of Kingdom Hearts concerning things like heartless and nobodies and what not.

:) It's okay. It's not something I advertise. I read lips and subtitles just fine. I kind of picked up my characters to play them myself though. You made it sound in your post like this was some sort of canon event of which content from it would be used in the RP and stuff.

Yeah. ;-; It stresses me out though! Majority of my life and time is spent in complete silence and all of a sudden hearing a bunch of things at once freaks me out. I mostly just use it for music cause if I put music on I don't have to hear all the other sounds and my head doesn't explode. Plus over the years I've gotten so use to silence that hearing or attempting to say words embarrasses me because they don't sound how I expected.

Yes! But ask Mari I have to crank the volume so loud that even with my huge headphones she can hear it in the next room but I'm still hearing it at a low volume. I COULD get a cochlear implant but when the entire process was explained to me I was too scared to go through with it.

Exactly. I have a hearing aid but when I actually use it people don't realize that all those normal small sounds that they don't notice because they're not normally there for me I notice and them plus all the other ones just causes me to freak out. It's why I learned to read lips so I wouldn't have to use it in school to pay attention.

My brain has a great deal of difficultly filtering out noises, smells, and simplifying my vision. So I hear things like low-level mechanical buzzes, breathing, people shifting in their seats, and it comes in just as much as the person's voice does.

And my vision and sense of smell are the same way, its a wonder I can walk to school every morning and not have a breakdown.

It's weird sometimes to people that I prefer not having it on and not hearing. It's for that reason though it's just too much. It's hard going from nothing to all of it.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]girlgenius
2009-12-02 05:47 pm UTC (link)
I don't find it weird. In fact there's a part of me that wishes I could shut off noises sometimes.

I understand that your brain can adapt, eventually, to being able to hear from coming from not hearing anything, but that doesn't mean it won't be a shock on the system. There's very little you can do to make it be a more gradual change considering that without some serious sound-proofing, you can't filter out noises if your brain hasn't learned how to do it.

Like the above comments I don't know about any of this either but I'd like to just see this as a side project not canon RP thing. Because really what's the point of me even RPing then if you're writing the script and I don't even have a mic so you'd have to bring in someone to VA for me too?

I mean I don't doubt it could be a fun idea but I think seriously it should just be out of RP side project fun using the RP and your characters as the base since it's already clear that not everyone would be able to participate (or even hear for that matter).

Also if it really is up to us then don't change Kingdom Hearts canon for canon things. Kind of like before with the whole no pet heartless and no drinking heartless blood because they don't have it thing.

I edited it stating that this is a side project and I took the voting thing out. The reason I totally messed up the cannon is that I'm not that familiar with it and kind of got liberal with what I did know about it. Jackie has told me all of the inaccuracies in the first play.

Oh I figured I'd say it official since I got distracted above. While I'm sure this might be fun for some me and my characters will have to pass. There really just isn't anything for me to do it in. You'd be writing the script. You'd be finding someone to read the lines you wrote for me since I can't and in the end I lack the ability to enjoy the finished product.
