Josh was having a great time as they took a seat on the little ferry. He loved seeing her smile and that she was having a good time. Josh didn't usually do things like this. He was usually a "stick in the mud" as his sister liked to say, always so serious and responsible. In the last couple of months Josh realized you only live once, and you're only young once. Just because he had to take care of his family and work hard didn't mean he couldn't have fun. Sure he wanted to get out of his current situation, take care of his siblings, make something of himself, but did that mean he had to give up his life for them? He didn't have to make the same mistakes as his mother, in fact he wouldn't, but that didn't mean he had to deny himself everything. So long as he was careful and still kept up with all of his responsibilities, there was no reason he couldn't have a little fun every once in a while.
Right?
Regardless of whether it was right or not, Josh didn't care. Right now all he cared about was having a good time and trying to impress this girl that seemed intrigued about his newfound fun loving behavior. Maybe it would be good for him, maybe he wouldn't, but if he sat around all day with books and babies what sort of life would that make for him?
Besides, what did the party guys have that he didn't have? Well, besides money. He could be fun and he was kinda cute... maybe... Except for his crazy curly hair. He shook his head then and felt his hair shake along with him. He wished he would have worn some kind of a hat.
"Ugh, I hate my hair," he said laughing. "I'm glad you like surprises. This one will be a doozy I promise." Doozy? He shook his head again then thinking about his dorky choice of words. Apparently you could take the dork out of the school but you couldn't take it out of the person. He'd get there, he hoped, but right now he was just trying to stay calm.
Stay calm...
The ferry was approaching the docks. There was a guy selling fish feed out on the pier. That could be fun, but he thought it'd be better after they slid down the bean. Great way to end the day, he thought. Luckily mid afternoon Friday was a quiet time in the park, so hopefully they wouldn't get in trouble. Josh took a deep breath and set his hand beside him on the bench, close to Melly's. He wanted to touch it, but something told him to wait.
Stay calm...
