Who: Melly Sullivan & Josh Roberts
What: A date-ish thing
Where: Huddle House and beyond
When: Friday Afternoon; April 18th
Rating: PG, I think!
Status: Incomplete

The Huddle House had been everything Josh had said it would be. Melly liked it, actually. It had a pretty cool atmosphere and she'd really enjoyed talking to him as they waited for their order and even as they ate. Josh wasn't the kind of guy she normally chased after. He wasn't like Mark or like Aaron. He was nice, though. And he definitely needed to lighten up a little more.

She'd actually been really surprised that he was willing to skip today. Far from complaining, though, she was really glad. She'd had to get up extra early to finish her shopping and she was going to be up so late packing for the flight to Cancun, but it would be worth it. She was really having a good time.

Full of pancakes and bacon and probably way too much coffee, Melly stretched a little as they stepped outside again. It was still a little chilly out, but the sun was out today, at least and she smiled as that slight bit of warmth hit her face. She could just imagine how much nicer it was going to feel once she got to the beach.

"So, what's next?" she asked Josh, turning towards him with a slight smirk. Melly wasn't one of those girls to just sit around and let a guy direct her all of the time, but today she was content to let Josh drive. She'd always thought of him as so serious and responsible. Now that they were out - on a day they were supposed to be in school, no less - she really wanted to see what he could come up with. He'd surprised her with his willingness to ditch school with her and she couldn't wait to see what other surprised he might have in store for her.

Josh felt like he could fly. He didn't even feel guilty about skipping class. It's not like he had anybody but himself to answer to anyway. And what was one day?

And a day with this beautiful girl he thoroughly enjoyed the company of no less. The company he'd dreamed of really. He'd always like Melly. She was soft and sweet in a way that seemed to almost tame her flirty and bouncy nature. She was like a walking contradiction. A delightful one. And he was thrilled that she was ditching with him.

Josh ran a hand through his hair, the loose dark curls falling around his face. Lunch had been perfect. The greasy food and plastic seats were a great fun place to eat, and better than that, she didn't think he was a total loser. Melly actually seemed impressed and to enjoy the almost 1930s diner flashback, which really helped stem his nervousness. Josh liked finding these little hole in the wall places that had great food and no one really knew about. "What's next," he said playfully, putting his hands in his pockets and nudged his shoulder against her as they walked.

He smiled thinking about his brilliance. He wasn't sure if she would have anything in mind, but just in case she didn't he had looked up a perfect two or three hour escapade, with the help of one of his "uncles" in the middle of the night about a year ago. One thing could be said about his mom's boyfriends, they certainly had character. This "uncle" had taken Josh through a back entrance into a building outside Millennium Park in the middle of the night. They'd climbed up the the fifth floor, where all of the maintenance equipment was so there weren't any offices or office workers to see them. Against the back wall the fire escape ladder hovered just above the giant bean. They had climbed down the ladder and let go to slide down the bean into the square. It was one of his favorite memories. But Millennium Park was a walk from where they were, so Josh had looked up a fun way to get there. Apparently there was a little ferry that ran from River Park up the street down to the marina right outside the park. So Josh planned on taking the ferry down the river with a bag of feed for the fish trailing in its wake, then up to the fire escape to slide down the bean.

But he didn't want to tell Melly all of his secret plans.

"River Park is about a block away. There's a little ferry we can take from there down to the marina at the lake. Then I thought we could go to Millennium Park. I've got kind of a surprise set up, if you want to make today memorable I mean." He was surprised at his quiet confidence since he was normally so nervous around girls, but everything seemed to be working out so he was excited. Though he was occasionally telling himself to calm down and just act cool.

This was going to be one ditch day neither of them would forget, so long as they didn't get arrested, he thought.

To be honest, Melly had never really thought about Josh in a datey way. He was a great guy, but he was always so serious and responsible. She liked to have fun and she tended to gravitate towards the popular guys - the jocks, the guys who liked to party. Josh definitely wasn't her usual type of guy.

She'd been glad to hang out with him today, though. After all, she thought her was an absolute sweetheart and he was kind of cute. He had that curly hair that she kept wanting to reach up and play with, even if she'd refrained from actually doing that so far. She watched Josh run his fingers through his own hair, though and thought wistfully about how she wouldn't hate doing that. She might not have really noticed him in this way before, but he actually was kind of cute.

"A surprise?" she perked up even more as he told her what he had planned. A brilliant smile lit up her face and her eyes sparkled excitedly. "I do like surprises," she told him, flashing that brilliant smile right at him.

Josh was having a great time as they took a seat on the little ferry. He loved seeing her smile and that she was having a good time. Josh didn't usually do things like this. He was usually a "stick in the mud" as his sister liked to say, always so serious and responsible. In the last couple of months Josh realized you only live once, and you're only young once. Just because he had to take care of his family and work hard didn't mean he couldn't have fun. Sure he wanted to get out of his current situation, take care of his siblings, make something of himself, but did that mean he had to give up his life for them? He didn't have to make the same mistakes as his mother, in fact he wouldn't, but that didn't mean he had to deny himself everything. So long as he was careful and still kept up with all of his responsibilities, there was no reason he couldn't have a little fun every once in a while.

Right?

Regardless of whether it was right or not, Josh didn't care. Right now all he cared about was having a good time and trying to impress this girl that seemed intrigued about his newfound fun loving behavior. Maybe it would be good for him, maybe he wouldn't, but if he sat around all day with books and babies what sort of life would that make for him?

Besides, what did the party guys have that he didn't have? Well, besides money. He could be fun and he was kinda cute... maybe... Except for his crazy curly hair. He shook his head then and felt his hair shake along with him. He wished he would have worn some kind of a hat.

"Ugh, I hate my hair," he said laughing. "I'm glad you like surprises. This one will be a doozy I promise." Doozy? He shook his head again then thinking about his dorky choice of words. Apparently you could take the dork out of the school but you couldn't take it out of the person. He'd get there, he hoped, but right now he was just trying to stay calm.

Stay calm...

The ferry was approaching the docks. There was a guy selling fish feed out on the pier. That could be fun, but he thought it'd be better after they slid down the bean. Great way to end the day, he thought. Luckily mid afternoon Friday was a quiet time in the park, so hopefully they wouldn't get in trouble. Josh took a deep breath and set his hand beside him on the bench, close to Melly's. He wanted to touch it, but something told him to wait.

Stay calm...

Melly would definitely agree that Josh needed to have some fun every once in awhile. In fact, she would say he needed to cut loose far more often than he did. If you asked her, Josh was far too serious. He definitely needed to loosen up a little.

"Really?" she asked as she complained about his hair. She laughed and shook her head. "I think it's kind of cool..." Once again, she was struck with the urge to touch it. If she could just reach up and run her fingers through those curls... She resisted, though. Kelly didn't know how he'd feel about random touching like that.

She grinned when he said the surprise was gonna be a doozy. It was kind of a dorky word, but she didn't mind. She kind of liked that he was a little goofy. He was different from other guys, but maybe that wasn't a bad thing.

"Do I get a hint?" she asked him, turning her head slightly to look at him, blue eyes sparkling with anticipation. She couldn't wait to see what he had planned.

"It's so wild," he said about his hair. "See?" He leaned forward and shook his head next to her letting his curly waves hit her in the face. He laughed and sat back up feeling self-conscious but smiling and leaning back in the chair to relax. He reached his hand up, and touched a bit of her hair hanging over her shoulder brushing it back. "It's not soft like yours." His head tilted to the side and he smiled, softer this time at her.

The boat approached the dock and Josh stood up, reaching a hand out and taking hers, squeezing it softly. He liked the way her hand was so smooth and small in his. Gently he guided her from the boat, helping her up the rocky stairs as they boarded the dock. He loosened his hand then to see if she would keep holding his.

Then he continued to walk toward Millennium Park. "Let's just say we're gonna drop in to the park." Looking over her he winked. They made their way around the edge of the park to a huge skyrise. The door was black, a little service entrance. Josh turned the handle and waited for her to walk in. "Your adventure awaits."

Melly giggled as her curls brushed against her cheek. "That's why I like it!" she told him, shaking her head. She likes the feel of his hand in her own curls, though. It was nice.

"It's not?" Melly was surprised by that, because it looked soft and this time she didn't resist the impulse to run her fingers through it. It wasn't soft necessarily, but she liked it. It had a nice texture. It was definitely touchable and she couldn't help smiling at him.

A moment later, he was helping her up from the bench and they were boarding the dock. Even though his grip loosened, she didn't drop his hand. She found she kind of liked that contact. Melly had always been a pretty affectionate person, though.

She grinned at his hint. That didn't really tell her much, but the anticipation was half the fun and she couldn't help looking forward to whatever he had in store for them as she made her way through that black door.

Josh liked the feelings of her touching him and it made him excited. It made him feel confident, like maybe for just a few minutes he could be a normal kid not working his ass off trying to take care of his siblings and everything at home. For once he could be a guy ditching, having a good time with a girl.

Taking her hand, firmly this time squeezing it a little, after she stepped inside he shut the door quietly. They weren't really supposed to be in here, but no one ever came in here. They'd be fine. "Just stay close," he said and made his way up the stairs. Second floor. Third Floor. Fourth floor and another door. They walked down another hallway, made a little turn and there was the fire escape. Josh's heart was racing as he opened the door again and guided her out to the fire escape.

"My sister and I used to come out here and do this all the time." They could see the lake and the mostly abandoned park all around them. The huge reflecting bean just under the ladder that led to nowhere. "You climb down the ladder and let go and you slide down the bean all slow. It's fun. Ready?" He nudged her a little with his shoulder hoping she was more excited, this is fun than freaking out. Guess he'd find out soon enough.

Nelly liked the firm way he held her hand and she smiled when she looked over at him. She was having a really good time already.

"Yes, sir," she murmured, smirking with amusement at his request. There might have also been a hint of suggestion in her tone, but she couldn't really help it.

When she realized exactly what they were doing, a bright grin spread across her face. "Sweet!" she exclaimed as her eyes sparkled with excitement. She was maybe a little nervous, but this really sounded like fun!

Josh noticed her hint and a thrill went through him as he squeezed her hand tight and let them out onto the fire escape.

The wind was blowing and he watched Melly's hair being tossed around. He touched it again softly, this time tucking a bit of it behind her ear and smiling. Her skin was soft and his thumb may have lingered a little longer than he would have thought was appropriate if he had been thinking. Right now all he could think about was his hear pounding in his ears and the feeling of nervous excitement in his stomach. He couldn't believe she was excited and not freaking out.

"Okay, I'll go first. Just watch me and then I'll be down there waiting for you." He squeezed her hand one last time before heading down the ladder. He got to the last rung about 5 feet above the bean. It was about ten feet tall so this made quite the slide. He really hoped she didn't chicken out. But hopefully a little coaxing even if she was scared would encourage her. "Just dangle and let go," he said and smiled up to her. His feet hung under the last rung and he dangled there for a minute. Then he let go, the free fall only lasting a second but enough to make his stomach go up in his throat. Then he hit the smooth edge and slid down landing in the park.

"Just follow my lead," Josh called up to her. "Surely all angels know how to fly?"

Melly didn't mind the way his touch lingered on her skin in the slightest. It was a nice feeling. Melly had always been a really affectionate girl and she liked those little touches, innocent or not.

She nodded when he told her to just watch him and her heart beat faster in anticipation as she watched him slide down the pull. It was a little scary, but in the good, thrilling way, like getting on a roller coaster or diving from the highest board at the pool. She couldn't wait.

She grinned at his cheesy compliment. It was a line. She knew it was a line, because she had plenty of experience with boys saying things like that. She couldn't help but like it, though.

A moment later, she'd grasped the bean and followed his lead, sliding down as he had done. When she reached the ground, it took a second to catch her footing and she found herself stumbling into him a little. Her eyes were bright with excitement, though.

"That. Was. Awesome," she informed him breathlessly as she looked up to catch his gaze with hers.

Josh smiled as he watched her slide down the bean, anticipating her movements with his arms outstretched, when she stumbled he was right there, hand lightly on her hips helping to steady her. She was so small in his arms. He wasn't a football player or anything like that, but he was tall and broad. Leslie always says he gives the best bear hugs, his arms enveloping around people that are smaller than him.

But right now they were just standing there for a moment that felt like an hour in slow motion. The wind caught her hair just right and everything seemed right. It was a great day.

Doing something completely against his character, shoving his head to the back of the room and listening just to his emotions and his body. He touched her cheek and trailed his fingers down along her jaw so he was cupping her neck in his hand and ran his thumb along the side of her jaw softly. He leaned down, not too fast but not slowly inching forward either, and took her mouth with his. At first gentle, soft, barely a whisper of a kiss, then he put a little more of himself into it and held her there with his heart racing a mile a minute yet calming and letting him enjoy the moment.

Melly didn't know what she'd expected when Josh had offered to skip school with her, but it definitely wasn't this. She wasn't expecting Mr. Serious and Responsible to be so much fun. He caught her by surprise with that, but she didn't think it was a bad thing, not at all.

She was usually good at making the first move, but when Josh caught her, hands on his hips to steady her, all she could do was stare up at him, noticing things she'd never really noticed before, like his long lashes and his gorgeous brown eyes. He was definitely cute, she decided before his hand on her cheek sent an unexpected shiver down her spine.

Melly melted into the embrace when he kissed her. Her lips parted slightly under his as she returned his kiss and she hummed a soft approval as her fingers sought to tangle in his hair. This wasn't the direction she'd expected today to take, but she wasn't complaining in the slightest.

Josh's fingers tightened slightly around the back of her neck and pulled her closer. His hand that was resting on her hip moved around her, pressing her body against his. He couldn't seem to get enough of her. Her touches, those hands in his hair. Everything about this moment was perfect.

Melly's response was all Josh needed. His kiss grew deeper, more passionate. Like they were the only two people there. He matched her motions, her mouth opened his opened. She pressed tighter he pressed tighter. His tongue played at the tip of her lips. His hand moved into her hair. His tongue slipped past her soft lips and into her mouth.

So he may have planned all of this. And he may have hoped all of this. But never in his dreams did he think it would ever work out like this. Not this... this perfect.

And for the first time in his life, his brain had shut up.
