Who: Elani and whomever else is out and about
Where: Village streets
When: Early morning
Warnings: None?

The day had dawned bright, cheerful, and warm, just like many of the days seemed to be here in the Village. Being that Elani herself had always been something of an early riser, she had dawned bright and cheerful right along with it. Of course, there was always work to be done so waking with the sun was definitely not a fault to be found in a girl who worked in an Inn. Even if Humphrey rarely expected her to actually work until later in the day, when the village's residents began trickling in for an afternoon or evening meal. That was when she needed to be down in the main room, smiling and bringing plates of food and mugs of ale. Or singing. There were still many songs they'd never heard that she had yet to sing so the novelty of having her there hadn't worn off yet.

And she was learning new songs all the time.

Still, though she wasn't expected to help with the day's cooking that would already be beginning down in the kitchen, just the evening before Humphrey had been lamenting a distinct lack of the herbs he usually used in his famous meat pies. Elani seemed to remember seeing a patch of wild herbs growing near the field south of the village and was sure the freshly picked plants would make for a welcome surprise.

So that was what saw her exiting the Inn just as the sun rose above the trees of the forest. She'd made sure to be prepared, too, putting on her shabbier skirt and blouse since she would be likely getting dirty and hot. She'd even tied her hair back, out of the way, though not having it hanging loose always felt awkward and strange. On her arm, she carried a large basket with which to bring back the wild rosemary and thyme she hoped to recover...and she thought she remembered some wild onions, too. And of course, if she picked a few wildflowers along the way, they could always brighten up the inn's common room.

Being that it was still early and few people seemed to be stirring from their homes yet, she'd wait until she passed the last house to start singing to herself.

But that didn't stop her humming a happy tune as she walked.

Puss was out on his morning jaunt, bounding through the grass happy as can be. He didn't mind living in the Piper's castle, but cold stone had never sung to him the way a field of tall grass did. He was a wild thing after all, a feral cat in the polite disguise of domestication. His manners could hardly counter his nature.

So it was that he crept out of the castle just before dawn and wandered the land, the woods, the field, the places where human hands hadn't spoiled the natural world.

He was just about ready for breakfast, a quick wander through town, maybe an unsuspecting resident would offer a sad, stray cat a plate of food. He didn't bother with Handel's Tears anymore. One of the witches had tried to turn him into a meat pie. At least in the village there was less of a chance for him to end up as dinner.

Winding his way along the streets he spied a very pretty lady with long, blonde hair humming as she walked. He was drawn to her simply because she was a pretty thing and her tune was delightful. He sauntered up to her and looked expectantly upward, offering her a polite mew.

Elani's tune paused as a rather polite-sounding meow drew her attention downward. Upon catching sight of the handsome cat at her feet, she smiled and dropped to her knees to greet him. Luckily, it was early yet, too early for her to be in anyone's way.

"Why, hello there," she said, stretching out a hand for him to sniff, "and aren't you a very handsome cat?"

"Why thank you," he replied cheerfully sniffing at her hand. Such a nice, pretty lady to observe the bizarre trust ritual humans had with tamer cats. "You're quite lovely yourself."

She really ought to know better, living here in the Village. Not to mention being from a magical land, herself. Not that there were any talking cats there. Or, at least, none that she had ever met.

So her reaction, when she let out a little shriek and pulled back when Puss began to speak...well, it should have been understandable, really.

"I...thank you?"

Because, after all, what else did one say when complimented by a cat?

He was quite used to this reaction. It tended to be more severe if he played silly cat for awhile and then introduced himself properly. He rose onto his hind legs and bowed courteously.

"I am quite sorry if I have frightened you. I find it best to be up front."

He beamed at her as she thanked him. "I am quite honored to be called handsome by such a lovely creature," he replied in kind.

"It is a beautiful morning for a stroll. Perhaps you would desire some company on your travels?"

Not only was the cat speaking intelligibly, it was now bowing and standing on its hind legs. How very curious!

But Elani was nothing if not adaptable and so she managed to gather her wits about her and smile at Puss. "If wish to join me, I could think of no better company."

"I would be most honored," he said with another extravagant kitty bow. He walked in a little circle so he was aligned in the same direction as Elani. "Is there a particular reason for your jaunt this morning? If I'm not being too invasive. I don't like to pry."

She showed him her as yet empty basket before she stood so they could continue walking. "I remembered there might be herbs this way, and onions too and wanted to surprise Humphrey with them. "That is, he's the owner of the village's Inn." Loyalty to her employer kept Elani from bringing up Max's inn just across the way. But then, if the cat knew of Humphrey, he'd certainly know of which inn she meant.

And, "oh!" she exclaimed, because where were her manners? "I didn't say...my name is Elani and it's a pleasure to meet you." And, unlike many people, it was obvious she actually meant that nicety.

"It is I who should apologize," he said, stopping just long enough to give another courteous bow. "I am Puss de Carabas, fair lady Elani. It is an absolute pleasure to meet you."

He might have reached up to kiss her hand, but he usually saved his court manners for the castle. Instead he plucked alongside her to the field where they could get some herbs and onions. "I know where there's some lovely thyme."

"Do you? I'm sure that Humphrey could use that."

And she'd often thought she'd detected the taste of thyme in Humphrey's meat pies. Not that he shared the recipe and she tended to stay out of the kitchen as far as the cookery went. Serve the food? Yes, she could do that. Prepare it? Her skill in that arena was rather limited.

"Love the smell of it more than the taste," he admitted with a little kitty shrug as he sauntered along beside her.

The morning air was refreshing, but so was the pleasant company of the lady beside him. Puss always did have a soft spot for the ladies.

"If I'm not too forward in asking, are you newer here? So many new faces all the time, I find it difficult to keep track some days who I've met and who I haven't."

Elani shook her head as she settled down to pick the herbs they'd found. "Oh no, I've been here...some time."

She paused in her picking and considered, "I'm afraid I lost track," plus it hadn't seemed to be the same season here as it was when she'd left Lombrica so that had rather muddled things. "Perhaps a few months?"

Puss helped pluck some herbs for her basket. He could walk on his back paws and pick up the greenery in his front paws. He figured if he picked it with his mouth she'd politely accept but throw the herbs out later. And that would be a waste.

He nodded. "I've been here some time." He didn't have an exact number to recite either. Time was such a lengthy and fluid thing to him. Seconds could seem like centuries, a millennium could pass in a moment.

"Do you like it?" he asked. Time didn't matter much when weighed with whether or not a person could tolerate their situation.

Elani nodded slowly, thinking as she picked the herbs. "Everyone has been very kind to me here," she said, "and I do enjoy working in the inn."

But it wasn't home.

"Did you follow the Piper here as well?" And was it possible her cheeks colored a little a mention of the Piper?

"Followed a song. Realized he was the cause of it." Puss shrugged as cats tend to shrug away from something they don't want touching them. He felt duped, falling for a song and being stuck in the middle of a forest.

It was an adventure though; that helped to soothe him over it. This place was something new and there were undercurrents of power here. It was quiet thus far, but Puss knew that all places quiet grew loud eventually.

"I don't mind it so far. Good stomping grounds," he said flicking his tail at their surroundings. "Lots of mice."

She finished gathering up the herbs, and looked over at Puss curiously. "Do you only chase the mice or catch them too?"

Some cats, she'd observed, seemed to enjoy the game more than the end of it.

He didn't know if a lady would be disturbed by his hunting habits. He replied most courteously: "I am a very humane catcher." Then he grinned a little devilishly. "Tell me lady, do you throw back all the handsome men you must catch?"
