Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO; Melanie Roberts && Charles Vaisey.
WHEN; Saturday, September 27th.
WHERE; Courtyard.
SUMMARY; She didn't see this coming. For serious.
RATING; Let's say PG for now.
WARNINGS; Some serious rambling, dude.
STATUS; In progress.

Unlike her roommates, Melanie had always been a morning person. She would wake up every day at six in the morning to prepare for the day and be on time for breakfast. The main reason why she was so used to getting up so early was the time it took her to get ready; it wasn't rare of her to space out in the middle of putting on her socks or doing her tie, always stopping an activity halfway to start another.

Even during weekends, Melanie would continue the routine of waking up exactly at six, lying in bed for at least 10 minutes before heading off to the showers. The advantage of it all was that she could take as long as she wanted to in the shower, without any of the girls complaining about it, because they usually woke up by the time she was almost done getting dressed. Today was Saturday, though, and she could afford staying in bed for longer than ten minutes, but Melanie was too impatient to stay still for long periods of time and it was barely 6:30 when she walked out of the common room - still in pyjamas - and decided to go for a walk.

As she walked through the darkened halls of the castle, Melanie hoped she wouldn't come across Peeves. As much as the poltergeist amused her most of the times, she would hate herself if she caused him to wake the whole castle, so she was extra careful opening the door that led to the Entrance Hall and then the main door leading to the grounds. The weather was perfect, just the slightest bit chilly and cloudy, though the sun was still visible, and Melanie stopped a moment to breathe in the air before going on.

She finally settled on one of the stone benches closest to the water fountain, pulling her knees close to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. Melanie usually hated being by herself, but there were times when it was actually rather nice, because she would start daydreaming and her mind would drift away to far away places that didn't make any sense, but then again, nothing made much sense when it came to her.

Noah was snoring. Loudly. It wasn’t exactly helping the fact that Charlie couldn’t sleep, in fact he had barely slept all night long. It might’ve had to deal with the fact that his Runes homework was in shreds and he’d have to redo the whole assignment this weekend, in addition to other essays and he wanted to make sure he’d be able to fly some time before Monday. He stretched his limbs out and sighed as he grabbed his pillow and let out a groan. Could he use a silencing charm around Noah? Or would that only work on him? Charlie shook his head and wondered who he could ask without sounding insane. Well, it was magic or smothering him, and magic seemed like an overall better option.

Charlie sat up and threw off his covers and looked out the window and vaguely wondered how early it was. He could take a nap later after all, and sleeping was now the last thing on his mind. He started humming as he put on his clothes, and looked around the common room. At least everyone was here tonight. Charlie felt extremely out of the loop when it came to his dorm mates, more than often they’d sneak out at late hours of the night, and of course he wasn’t supposed to care, but just the fact that he wasn’t involved in anything with people who were supposed to be his friends was a bit unnerving. Although things were definitely odd between Sam and Dean, Charlie had no way to approach that. Charlie decided on bringing his wand just in case, even though he only really wanted to walk to waste time until breakfast, and even then he’d probably just grab something quickly and start working on his homework for the second time.

By the time he’d made it out of the castle it was brighter, and clear at least after the last week. Charlie decided to just stay near the castle, after all it would be breakfast soon. It was only when he spotted the back of Melanie Robert’s head that his stomach did an uncomfortable back flip. He almost wanted to run away and make fun of himself, because honestly who recognizes the back of someone’s head? He was getting rather pathetic. It might have been the lack of sleep, or nutrition, or the fact that the two had just had a fight of sorts the previous night, but Charlie took a deep breath and walked straight towards the bench that Melanie was sitting on.

It would be simple, really, just say hello, maybe apologize some more, get on good terms with her. Because as much as he felt ridiculous for feeling so, Charlie honestly cared about Melanie and just her general happiness. He couldn’t stand the thought that he’d given her any grief. Even though she obviously didn’t feel the same way, he just wanted her to be happy.

Instead of saying hello or tapping her on the back, as general manners would have dictated, Charlie just sat down next to her on the bench and started to hum. It seemed for a couple of seconds like Melanie didn’t even notice he was there, though she had been known to daydream. Charlie just nodded and looked over at Melanie, his heart not racing at all like clichéd romance novels said, but it was almost like he wasn’t breathing and he didn’t have a pulse. He took a breath and then looked at Melanie as he gave her a weak smile.

“I- uhm, like your pyjamas.”

Melanie's eyes were fixed on some yellow bird doing funny things on a tree a few feet away. The way it kept hopping from one branch to the other and back amused her and she followed its every movement with her eyes, a small smile playing across her lips. Sometimes when she was bored and alone - pretty much like at that moment - she would think about the most bizarre things, like what it would feel like to be a bird and fly all the time. It wouldn't be at all like flying on a broom, as Bruno had once told her when she'd shared her thoughts with him, because there would always be the restriction of gravity and the possibility of falling and seriously injuring yourself if you lost control of it. Birds didn't have to worry about gravity or anything like that. In fact, it seemed like birds didn't have much to worry about, except for getting food and migrating when seasons changed and... well, hunters. Maybe.

She felt rather than saw when someone approached and sat next to her, but she didn't take her eyes off the bird, in case it flew away unnoticed. It made her curious, though, that someone besides herself was up so early in the morning (usually, the hustle and bustle would come after everyone had breakfast), but not curious enough to drop her gaze. At least not until they spoke.

The praise on her pyjamas made her smile. When she had got them for her birthday, she had spent three days straight wearing nothing but them until her mum had told her that she would wear them out before school started and then she wouldn't be able to show it off to her friends. That managed to convince her, but only a little bit, and she had started wearing her regular clothes during the day, again. "Thanks!" Melanie replied with a grin, looking down at the many prints of Zero floating around through the fabric. "My brother bought them for my birthd--" she stopped mid-sentence when she looked up and realised that it was Charlie sitting next to her. Charlie, of all people. Well, there goes the good mood.

Melanie was not sure what it was about Charlie that got to her, but she felt nervous and awkward all of a sudden. Her mouth opened and closed a couple of times before she could say anything else and then settled for a hurried, "oh. It's you." It was only after the words were out of her mouth that she realised how rude they were and she wanted to kick herself for not thinking before speaking. "No, I mean-- I didn't mean that like I don't want to see you here, but like, I didn't know it was you sitting there, and well, it surprised me to see you and--" she cut herself short before the rambling got worse and let out a small sigh, turning away from him again and resting her chin on top of her knees. "Hello, Charlie."

Charlie had to remind himself to breath properly. This wasn’t that big of a deal- just carry on the conversation like everything was perfectly fine. It was almost like he was drowning. The area around him seemed as though it was spinning and all Charlie could concentrate on was Melanie talking about her pyjamas and then talking about how she was surprised to see him here. Charlie tried to smile, but he was sure it almost seemed like a grimace with his physical state. Breathe, breathe. It took some time before he opened his mouth again, because he was arguing with himself in his head. Was it weird to act like they were friends? Was it odd to simply want to talk to her? Should he just leave her alone and run off? No, just… talk to her. Another deep breath and he turned to look at Melanie, and he felt his eye sight start to get fuzzy from lack of properly breathing. God he was being such a prat.

“Hello, Melanie,” he choked out, his voice coming out all wrong and his expression not right at all. He was dying, oh god he was dying. His stomach hurt too much and there was no lying to himself and saying that it was because of not eating- it was her. She made him feel like he was a complete and utter moron, and he was certainly acting like it. Charlie turned so he was looking forward, and leaned forward and put his face in his hands, just wanting to get up and walk off. No. He couldn’t walk off- when else would he get a chance like this? He could just say something, or do something, or just breathe. That’d work. Charlie took three deep breaths shook his head while a thought came to his mind. Just kiss her already, you bloody idiot. Could he? No, that was ridiculous. Charlie’s stomach hurt more when he thought about it. Why on earth did he care so much? She’s right there. He could just, lean over, it wouldn’t be too difficult. He’d forgotten that he’d just been quiet all this time. Charlie gulped and turned to face Melanie, and opened his mouth but couldn’t talk. IDIOT. You’re such a bloody moron. Charlie let out a groan and closed his eyes again. God he should just walk away while he was still sane. She was making him insane.

Melanie was trying to act aloof, like the situation wasn't bothering her at all, but she didn't think she was doing a good job at it. She had a death grip on her legs and her forehead was creased by a frown and she really, really was trying to make any sense of why Charlie was sitting right next to her, and so close, too. It made her uncomfortable and anxious; why was he there? Was he following her now? Merlin, what if he wanted to do something to her? Melanie shook those thoughts away, telling herself that she was getting paranoid about something silly. It was just a coincidence that he happened to come across her and there was no reason to think otherwise. As much of an arse as Charlie had been to her in the past, he had never tried to hurt her, so there was no reason to think he would start now. Still, a little part of her was growing nervous and she briefly considered just getting up and walking away. That was, at least, until he spoke up.

Melanie let go of her legs, letting them hit the floor and sitting up straight as she gave Charlie a once over. He looked flustered and kind of pale and she started feeling concerned for him. "Uh, Charlie? Are you feeling alright? You have this really odd look on your face, like... like the one I had when my mum made me eat veal that one time when we were seven." She reached a hand forward to feel his forehead, but pulled it back quickly, the awkwardness growing as she just sat there, not sure of what to do. She just really hoped that he wouldn't get sick. "Do you-- do you need any help? I don't know if Madam Pomfrey is up right now but I could go check really quickly if you need me to?" Melanie finally settled on grabbing his shoulder and shaking him a little bit because the hazy look on his face was starting to seriously worry her now. "Charlie?"

It was her. She was the only one that would make him feel like this, for crying out loud he just wanted to be fine again. Charlie heard her say his name as he was finally able to breathe. It had to be done, there’d be no more of this nonsense. “Fine,” Charlie let out in a laboured breath and tried to smile, the only problem was it made his stomach hurt more, “I’m fine.”

There was a second where his heart skipped a beat and reminded him that he was indeed alive, oh he was alive. And she was so close. It was almost like people say that time slows down, only completely different—it was like they were the only people that mattered at that one moment, and that instead of them slowing down while the rest of the world moved on, it was them who moved faster. Each breath that Melanie took, the ever constant tingling in Charlie’s stomach, and then the blank look that she had on her face as Charlie leaned forward. He’d just give in, because he wanted nothing more in the moment than to kiss her.

His hand had found its way on her cheek, it, or the rest of him for that matter, was no longer shaking. Charlie felt well, because it would finally be done. No regrets. He could have sworn Melanie had opened her mouth once more to say something, but he didn’t give her the opportunity. With that he simply pressed his lips against hers, keeping his balance by letting one hand lean on the bench while the other had moved to Melanie’s neck. Charlie’s eyes closed as he continued kissing Melanie. There would be time to worry about the consequences later. Right now all that was pressing was the fact that he was actually kissing her.

It couldn’t have been more than a few seconds, but Charlie pulled away before she had the time to shove him. He was determined, yes, but one could only take so much rejection. Before he could open his eyes to see her reaction his felt hot and was bound to be blushing. Oh Merlin. Why.

“I-I-uh-Strebbor. Needs food. Bye.” Charlie gulped once before he jumped up awkwardly. Why why why why WHY. Glad that he hadn’t brought anything with him outside, Charlie rushed away from the bench, lucky to miss a stone column that he had almost ran straight into. He was too mortified to even think about what he’d done. It was done. His fate was sealed. She’d hate him more than ever.
