WHO: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger
WHEN: Thursday afternoon, after classes
WHERE: Common room
SUMMARY: Ron surprises Hermione with a thoughtful gesture so she'll forgive him
RATING: PG for fluff?
STATUS: Complete

Ron had been working on this for days. He was miserable without Hermione and he missed her too much to go on not speaking like they were. He knew some of the things he'd said in anger had hurt her she'd hurt him too but he figured that taking the initiative and apologzing first was what needed to be done in order to right things.

He'd owled his Mum days ago asking for instructions on how to do his little plan and after plenty of struggling, he'd figured it out and although it wasn't the best, it was definitely going to please Hermione when she saw the effort he was putting in. Now, all that was left was actually going to talk to her. Harder than it sounds.

Figuring she'd be in the library studying for exams, he took a deep breath, ran a hand through his hair and headed in that direction, eyes scanning the room as he entered. He spotted her in the corner, books spread across the tables, scribbling furiously on parchment and slowly he walked over.

"Hi Hermione." He said softly, hoping she wouldn't ignore him completely and at least let him do his apology thing.

Ron immediately knew he'd chosen the wrong time to do this. Everyone knew that when Hermione was working you didn't bother her. It just wasn't done. He'd just been so eager to get this all resolved that he'd ignored that and now he could see she was going to be annoyed with him even more than she already was for interupting her study time.

"Er, would you, when you're done that is, come to the common room? I have... there's something I want to show you." He said it as nicely as possible, giving her a soft smile and hoping she'd agree. "No rush or anything. Just, when you're done." He added in for good measure. Maybe it would help her to agree if he told her to focus on her studies first.

"Ron..." Hermione sighed when he asked if she could eventually come with him to the common room. She really had a lot of studying to do; her hardest exam was coming up and it was important that she did her best on it. That and she didn't really want to get into another argument with him which seemed almost imperative at the rate they were going.

Sighing again, she looked down at the notes and books neatly sprawled out in front of her in an organised fashion that would only make sense to her. "How long will it take?" she asked finally.

"Not very." Ron answered immediately, happy she was actually speaking to him civilly and was not ignoring him like she had been for the past week. "You don't have to come right away. It can wait until you're done." In reality he was quite anxious but he wasn't about to tell her that. She was studying and letting her finish would show he was thoughtful, right? Well, he hoped so.

"I can just wait for you there. It's fine." He said with a shrug, remaining indifferent to if she answered either way. As long as she planned to come at some point he was happy.

Looking over her books again, Hermione bit her lip and thought. On one hand, she could stay there, continue to study and go later. But on the other hand, she could go ahead and get it through, take that small break, and work on it more later. It wasn't as hard a decision as thought - she just wanted to get it over with and see what he was going on about.

Biting into her lip, she closed the books, tucking her pieces of parchment in them and stacking them neatly. Madam Pince would know that she would be back; the two had a mutual understanding after all those years.

"What is it then, show me," she said, waving her arm in the direction of the door to the library.

"Now? Oh brill. Come on then." He said looking towards the door and beginning to walk towards it. As they walked in silence to the common room, he hoped no one had touched the little display he'd set up by the fire. He'd warned the entire common room not to as he lieft, saying he'd give out detentions to anyone to touched it but you never know what those brats would do.

He hoped she would like what he did. It had taken a lot of work and organizing and he'd done it specifically because he knew it would mean a lot to her and was a good link into the apology he owed her.

After walking for a few minutes, Hermione wasn't sure if this was such a great idea. Her mind was still running over the materials she had been studying, but her curiosity was also increasing the closer they got to the common room. However, she wouldn't ask yet. Whatever he had planned, she would give him the benefit of the doubt, if only because she still loved him. She was still angry though.

When they reached the portrait hole, Ron said the password quickly and climbed through ahead of Hermione to make sure everything was still in place. He saw the table all set up just the way he left it and breathed a sigh of relief.

He'd spent the past three days knitting hats and scarves for the elves. He'd even gotten Dobby to give him a list of the names of all of the elves and he'd labeled all the hats and scarves with the names of each elf. He'd made banner saying "JOIN S.P.E.W." decorating it as nicely as he could not being very artistic. Then he'd gotten Tonks to go to a shop in Diagon Alley and get new buttons made for S.P.E.W. so Hermione could hand them out and recruit new members. All this was set up on the table by the fire and Ron stood next to it waiting for Hermione to see it and react.

Stepping inside the portrait hole after Ron, Hermione looked around the common room to see who was in there first before following him over to the table he was standing next to. Glancing at it, she noticed winter clothing, but when she did a double-take, her eyes widened as she read the sign and looked closer at the scarves and hats on the table, each embroidered with the names of every single one of the house-elves in the kitchens.

Quickly looking up at him, she furrowed her eyebrows at him. "What is all this?" she asked, the disbelief evident in her voice.

"Er, well..." He turned a bit red. She seemed a bit more shocked than the pleased he was hoping for. He needed to explain it to her so she'd understand. Maybe then she'd be happy with him and would forgive him like her hoped.

"See, I know the things I said about the house elves hurt you and I didn't really mean them, I was just angry, especially after the war and everything I understand more about your point of view on the elves but I was upset and those things just came out so I figured this would show you that I really do care and I know SPEW means a lot to you and so does the whole thing it stands for so I figured this might be a good way to apologize you know? And show you that I'm not really the insensitive jerk I can sometimes be but I really do care and I love you and I didn't mean anything I said and I'm sorry..."

He said it all in one breath and so, when he was finished, sucked in a huge amount of hair, his chest heaving.

Hermione listened to his explanation while she looked at the assorted hats and scarves on the table. Reaching over, she touched the scarf for Dobby; she hadn't even gotten the chance to finish his present yet. She was almost finished, but not quite yet. It would have been done before she left for Christmas.

When he finished, she looked up at him, her lips parted. "You did all this?" she asked, still finding it hard to believe. He had never really supported S.P.E.W. before. Sure, he had changed a bit during the last year they were fighting in the war, but she knew that it was hard to change everything he had believed in before.

"This is -" she was momentarily lost for words. It was amazing and she could hardly believe it. This was definitely more of an apology and she wouldn't doubt that Harry and Ginny had a hand in it somewhere. The anger and disappointed she had felt started to ebb away. Deciding that this was enough of an apology, Hermione turned and hugged him. "This is amazing, thank you."

Ron's eyes lit up at her reaction, very happy and thankful that his apology seemed to be accepted and she really did like what he did. He'd put a lot of effort into it and the knitting had been murder. He was surprised he made it out of that world of yarn alive.

He hugged her back eargerly and tightly, not having felt her in his arms for quite some time and loving how it felt to have her back like that. "I did it all myself too, 'Mione! No help from anyone... not even Harry or Ginny." He said with a big grin, proud of himself. "I only had to owl Mum for instructions on how to knit and Tonks to pick up the buttons I ordered and have them owled."

She was momentarily surprised when he announced that he had done it all on his own. How could he manage to knit at least a dozen when she couldn't even manage a few in the span of a few days. Then, it came to her - magic. It was helpful, but she had always resorted to doing things the muggle way. Besides, he also had more time lately than she did.

Pulling away for a second, she glanced at him and tucked the strands of hair that had escaped from her plait behind her ears. "About the other night -- I'm sorry too. I wasn't really mad at you," she explained, her cheeks turning red as she averted her gaze over his shoulder. "I was embarrassed at being caught with the book your brothers got you and took that out on you."

Ron was surprised by her confession, not knowing that had been the reason she'd gotten so angry. He had thought it was because of the book itself. He thought that maybe she thought he was a pervert or something and that had only fueled his anger at the time because that was the last thing he was.

" 'S'okay." He said softly, shrugging and giving her a smile. "We both made mistakes, yeah? Said a lot of things out of anger. It was a bit of a big deal over something small, I reckon."

Hermione nodded, agreeing with him completely. they had made mistakes, both of them, and they always knew which buttons to push that would hurt the most when they were angry. And they had most definitely pushed them. Hard.

"If you don't really want that book, you should try sending it back to your brothers," she said, treading easily so that they wouldn't get angry at each other again. "You don't have to keep it just because they sent it to you."

"I'm definitely going to try." Ron said with a nod, pulling Hermione down to sit on the couch with him. "If they've hexed it and something happens to me so be it." He said with a shrug, not really caring... he'd been through worse with Fred and George.

"So, you really like it then? Took me ages." He said, pointing to the table of stuff he'd done for her. He really was proud of his work even if the hats and scarves looked like wonky balls of yarn.

Again, Hermione nodded as they sat down. She liked that idea. While it was just a book, it wasn't exactly one to have on Hogwarts grounds. If he kept it, it should be tucked away somewhere safe, somewhere where no one would fine it. She doubted though that the Burrow would be such a place considering how thorough his mum was when it came to cleaning and searching for things.

Looking at the table again, Hermione gave a small smile. "Yes, though I'm still more surprised than anything. They house-elves will have a good Christmas this year thanks to you."

Ron gave a shrug, smiling a bit sheepishly and blushing slightly. He really was pleased that Hermione liked his whole set up and he was thrilled they were speaking again. It had been horrible without her. He didn't know how he survived those months not speaking to her the previous year.

"I missed you like crazy, love." He said softly, lifting a hand to her cheek and stroking her skin softly with his fingers.

Turning her head to look at him, she unconsciously leaned into the caress, savouring it for a moment before giving him a small smile. "I missed you as well," she said quietly, meaning it, though she did want to point out that had they not both been so stubborn, they wouldn't have fought. But she held her tongue; saying something that insensitive would only cause another fight and honestly? - that was the last thing she wanted at the moment.

"Don't think I'm trying to get out of spending time with you, but I should head back to the Library shortly. My hardest exam is in two days and I can't afford to lose much motivation."

Ron felt a slight smile form on his face when she leaned into his touch a little. At least he hadn't been the only one who had missed the other. That being said, he didn't really want to part ways with her just yet.

"Mind if I grab my books and study with you? I won't be a bother, promise. Just want to stay with you." He shrugged a bit, needing to study himself but wanting to just be near her if he could.

Momentarily, she was surprised that he was so willing to take his books and go with her to the Library. It usually seemed as if she had to drag him in there by the ear, kicking and screaming the whole way before she would finally convince him to buckle down and study. But then the ulterior motive was revealed and she couldn't help but smiled.

Shaking her head, she pushed herself up off the couch. "So long as you actually study," she told him, giving him a look. She knew how distracted he could get.

"Promise." He said, holding his hands up in surrender and giving her a smile. He reached out and tugged on her hand, pulling her close for a moment before leaning down to kiss her softly. Merlin, he'd missed that.

He kissed her lovingly for a few moments before pulling away and tucking some hair behind her ear. "I missed that too, you know." He said with a little smile.

And she would hold him to that promise, mostly because, if she knew him well enough (and she believed she did after knowing him for so many years), he hadn't studied all that much yet. Therefore, every little bit that he got in between then and the exam would be more than helpful.

Smiling into the kiss, she felt it lingering and let it do so, even though they were in the common room. But she had missed it too and admitted the same, smiling gently. "Come on, we'd better get going. There's only a few hours left before we're kicked out."
