December 5, 1997 - Friday - Zacharias' B-Day celebration
Characters: All interested participants
Setting: Room of Requirement. Friday 12/05/97. 1900 (7:00pm) - 00:00 (12:00AM)
Rating: PG-13 at most.
Status: In progress

As dinner was coming to an end in the Great Hall the Room of Requirement was being spruced up for a party. The celebration of Zacharias Smith's birthday was the main event. The only problem was whether anyone would show up. There'd been a few people who'd expressed interest throughout the week whether it were for the birthday celebration or the free food was unimportant. All who inquired had been properly given the location and password.

Oh yes, the fact that Justin Finch-Fletchley had surpassed getting Head of House permission for this little get together it required a door man. Alright, so maybe the job was more or less made up on the spot when one Owen Cauldwell expressed great interest in helping out after all the roles on the "party committee" had been filled. In retrospect that was probably not such a good idea.

The ginger haired third year had taken his job as head of party security a bit more seriously than one might have thought. He'd concocted a password of "Smith went to Piccadilly Circus to shop for a new pink curling stone at Lillywhites," which Justin had properly offered to anyone who'd asked because it was just too amusing to shorten. Now, as the time of the party neared the younger year sat outside of the entrance to the Room of Requirement partaking in an intense game of Biting Jacks with his fellow security man, Angus Smalls, who's name didn't give his size much justice.

As party goers arrived the pair of third years nonchalantly demanded that each and every person present recite the password exactly without looking at any cheat notes!

Emma had spent a long time on her outfit, of course--a gray striped sweater that she had charmed into a short dress, with leggings and tall boots. These were all cleverly mismatched, as always. Upon entering the room she had scanned its population for anything worth talking about later. Emma had given a round half-hearted applause for Zach, avoided the calorie-filled torte and began circling the room. So far nothing worth remembering had happened, but she would keep a watchful eye.

Wondering where they were keeping the alcohol, Emma reached into her oversized purse and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. She didn't bother asking if anyone minded and lit one with her wand. They were charmed to smell like vanilla, rather than cigarette smoke, so that her clothes and hair never smelled awful. Exhaling, she keenly searched the room for an interesting person or alcohol, whichever came first.

Justin Finch-Fletchley was making his rounds after the important celebration bit was over. The party, for the most part, was going decently he thought. Alright, so majority of the masses were Hufflepuffs and there was an obvious clique feel in the air, but that didn't stop the seventh year from being cordial to all who arrived. He figured since he'd organized the damned thing he might has well pretend he was a good host.

He'd scanned the room after saying his congratulations to Zacharias before realizing he'd not yet spoken to one Emma Bundy this evening. Absently he wondered how long she'd been there. "Oye, Bundy," he offered with a smile as he approached. He'd made a mental note of her rather attractive choice in clothing this evening but decided not to comment. Instead he teased, "You old enough to be bothering with that stuff?" His hand waved in the air as if attempting to shoo away the smoke from her cigarette.

Emma wondered why she had come alone. There didn't seem to be too many people, and nothing terribly illegal was happening yet. Perhaps she should have asked Lavender to come along.

Somebody called her by her last name, and for a moment she thought they had said "Bunny"--an old nickname which she detested ever since her return for her sixth year. But when she glanced around she saw Justin Finch-Fletchley heading towards her. They hadn't really spoken since the year before. Emma was not ashamed to say that she had sort of shunned him, as well as others, upon her return to Hogwarts.

Part of her wanted to exhale in his face, when he mentioned her smoking, but doubted it would do any good since it only smelled like some sort of vanilla incense. She hated being reminded of her young age. "Positive," she replied, plastering a smile on her face regardless. No point in acting rude.

She reached into her bag, searching for her supposedly vintage cigarette case. "Oh, how rude of me. Would you care for one?" Her eyes glinted.

The Hufflepuff smoked socially with his muggle friends back home, and usually only when he was piss drunk. Unfortunately, he was still nursing his second bottle of alcohol. Playing host seemed to limit ones freedom to getting completely trashed.

Justin smirked at the offer and stared a moment at the Ravenclaw's cigarette case. The temptation was present, but instead he decided otherwise. "No," he shook his head, "I'm not a fan of vanilla scented cancer." Instead he winked at her and lifted his firewhisky bottle to his lips for a quick swig. Despite the fact that Emma had alienated him all term - Justin was still capable of playing friendly.

Emma shrugged offhandedly when he refused her cigarette. "It's better than cancer that smells like cancer," she said airily. Emma was beginning to think that people might not know that she smoked, though, if her clothes didn't smell like it. Perhaps she would have to charm the ciragrettes back...

Justin winked and she figured that he was getting somewhere near tipsy when she noticed a firewhiskey bottle in his hand. FINALLY. Without asking, she reached for it.

"I don't have cooties," she said as she put her hand on the bottle, still in his grasp.

Justin tugged his bottle back and offered a slight frown at first not entirely sure what she was doing. He'd immediately thought she was in the process of taking his beverage away - which would not have been very cool. When his brain caught up to her statement he smirked but still didn't relinquish the bottle. "Well I do."

Pulling the bottle away from his body and into the air as to get Emma to let go he said, "If you want one all you have to do is ask very nicely and I'll be sure to supply you with your very, very, very own."

Emma's mouth pinched and an eyebrow lifted involuntarily when he snatched the bottle away. She was used to doing the snatching. Touche, Finch-Fletchley. Quickly her expression melted into a practiced smirk, she stepped back as he lifted the bottle over his head. If any of that got on her she would be upset.

"Well then, Justin," she stumbled over the name, wondering if she had even mentioned it over the term. "May I have a firewhiskey. Or anything, really." She stopped abruptly, making it obvious that she would not be saying please. "After all, you are playing host."

"I am aren't I?" he asked rhetorically as he returned his arm to his side, "Next time you should remind me not too, hm? Come on," Justin nodded his head to his left as if to motion her to follow him.

Leading the way through the small crowd around the buffet table, Justin didn't bother to see if Emma was behind him. he suspected she'd be smart enough to catch the hint that the booze was elsewhere and a mild journey was necessary.

Stopping in front of a large tapestry of enchanted floating balloons he finally turned to see if they'd both made it safely. "Now, you have to take the oath," he informed as he raised his right hand in demonstration for Emma to follow. "No oath no alcohol."

She followed him quietly, keeping a safe distance and watching the room keenly. She held any stare or glance evenly, but nothing seemed to be happening that was worth telling anyone such as Lavender later. She nearly ran in to Justin when he stopped in front of a large, rather conspicuous tapestry of balloons.

"Are you--" Emma had opened her mouth to protest the oath, but stopped when he said the words 'no alcohol.' She glanced around, wishing right now that she could have been somebody in the background whispering.

"All right, then," she said after a quick scan of any friends that she knew might be arriving soon--none.

Might as well, she thought With a small smile, she raised her hand right hand. Besides, maybe if Justin became drunk enough he would blurt something of interest.

Justin smiled, "Alright...repeat after me." He gave his drink one last sip before smacking his lips. "I, Emma Bundy, swear that I will drink heartily and merrily and not inform anyone under the age of 16 that alcohol is being given away for free."

So the oath was more or less just a way for Justin to prolong the process. It helped give him piece of mind that he wasn't supplying booze to those who shouldn't have it in the first place. Sure Emma was a bit on the younger side, but he liked her well enough to bend the rules for her.

After clearing her throat dramatically, Emma solemnly repeated the oath. "I hope there aren't any people younger than sixteen here," she said melodramatically, not bothering to lower her voice. "They tend to ruin things. Everything, really." She was doing the best she could to seperate herself from everybody else. Being the center of attention was crucial. Recalling that fact, she carelessly put out her cigarette on the bottom of her boot. When she flicked it away, it was charmed to disappear.

Emma looked around at the carefully decorated room of requirement. "So, you came up with the oath, the password and all of these lovely decorations? My, my, that's an impressive feat."

"Hardly," Justin offered with a snort. "I assigned jobs to people and they did the rest." And that was the truth. Most of Justin's job was administrative - he told people what to do. They did it. And he took most of the credit. It was a corrupt system, but that's how it usually worked right? Yes.

He'd removed his wand and offered the tapestry a silent charm. A blue mist danced from the wand and snuck behind the wall decor. Soon there after, Justin looked to Emma and offered a nod for her to follow. He then disappeared behind the tapestry and unlocked the door hidden there with a key he had tucked in his trousers.

They entered a small walk in closet with a large trunk stationed in the middle. "What would you like?" he asked as he knelt down and bothered with a second key for the trunk. "We've got firewhisky, spiced Meade, some generic muggle beers, I think we had some cheap rum - but....it might be gone by now." The trunk creaked open and Justin looked back at Emma expectantly.

When he turned around Emma passed a scrutinizing eye over the room. The decorations were... extravagant, definitely. Emma wasn't sure how she felt about the music. It was too upbeat for something she would want others to know that she liked. Then again, Emma probably wouldn't make this much of an effort for anyone she knew.

What a Hufflepuff, she thought condescendingly.

She heard the creaking of a trunk and her eyes darted back to Justin. "Rum would be nice," she said thoughtfully. She had no problem with monopolizing what little might have been left with the bottle, and probably wouldn't have let it out of her grasp. She remembered that Justin hadn't offered her any of his drink and felt her mouth pinch subconsciously. "If you're out, though, some firewhiskey would suffice."

"Here," he offered handing her the near empty rum bottle. "How's about we just get you one for now and one later, hm?" He then proceeded to pour her a glass of firewhisky.

Justin figured it'd be in his best interest to give the girl enough booze to suffice for two requests so he wouldn't have to make another round in another half hour. Least he absently hoped the sixth year could hold her alcohol.

"Don't drink it too fast," he teased as handed her the glass and locked the trunk again. Standing he moved back towards the party. He properly held the door and tapestry open for Emma to follow.

Emma snatched the bottle from him first, unable to avoid the tightening around her mouth. She would really have to work on that. What if she started to get wrinkles early? She would have to check and see if Lisa offered any sort of wrinkle-preventing potion...

"Thanks," she said, managing to spread a smile. She realized as he poured her a glass that he was probably about to make his rounds. She managed to make a playful face as he teased her about drinking too quickly.

"Cheers," she raised the firewhiskey to Justin before taking a considerably large gulp. "Now I can see that you're trying to make your rounds, so I will sit back quietly and enjoy another cigarette while you do so." She winked.
