December 5, 1997 - Friday - Zacharias' B-Day celebration
Characters: All interested participants
Setting: Room of Requirement. Friday 12/05/97. 1900 (7:00pm) - 00:00 (12:00AM)
Rating: PG-13 at most.
Status: In progress

As dinner was coming to an end in the Great Hall the Room of Requirement was being spruced up for a party. The celebration of Zacharias Smith's birthday was the main event. The only problem was whether anyone would show up. There'd been a few people who'd expressed interest throughout the week whether it were for the birthday celebration or the free food was unimportant. All who inquired had been properly given the location and password.

Oh yes, the fact that Justin Finch-Fletchley had surpassed getting Head of House permission for this little get together it required a door man. Alright, so maybe the job was more or less made up on the spot when one Owen Cauldwell expressed great interest in helping out after all the roles on the "party committee" had been filled. In retrospect that was probably not such a good idea.

The ginger haired third year had taken his job as head of party security a bit more seriously than one might have thought. He'd concocted a password of "Smith went to Piccadilly Circus to shop for a new pink curling stone at Lillywhites," which Justin had properly offered to anyone who'd asked because it was just too amusing to shorten. Now, as the time of the party neared the younger year sat outside of the entrance to the Room of Requirement partaking in an intense game of Biting Jacks with his fellow security man, Angus Smalls, who's name didn't give his size much justice.

As party goers arrived the pair of third years nonchalantly demanded that each and every person present recite the password exactly without looking at any cheat notes!

Applauding mightily, Gelsey smiled not just at Zacharias, but at the whole room. There was so much joy in here, so much amazing energy! Why couldn't this be harnesses, like a power source. Or bottled for a potion. Or packaged for later, for another day, when things were bleak and depressing.

The moment the crowd began to disperse, she hurried back over to the record player, choosing a vivacious Accio Guitars song that just made her want to dance. But, seeing that she hadn't been asked--she never had, to be honest--she began to sway in a small circle behind the player. The fifth year Hufflepuff prefect had talked Gelsey into a Muggle party dress, pink with a full skirt that billowed merrily when she turned. If Gelsey had had her way, she would have worn that amazing taffeta curtain, but--this dress was pretty. Her hair was curly--again, that prefect, she was quite bossy, actually, but that's what Gelsey got for asking her about what she should wear.

So she spun in a circle, curling her hands in the air in time with the beat, humming in time with the song and firmly in the grasp of her own world, as usual.

Evie paced the Room of Requirement slowly, hands behind her back. She was watching everyone's faces very carefully, trying to read what they thought as they ate bits of the insanely complicated torte Zach had asked for. Nobody was spitting things out into nearby bins, at least that much was true. Zach had seemed indifferent about it earlier, but Evie had learned that it was probably the best response she would get, and was fine with that.

As she walked around she saw somebody spinning in a pink dress, and when she drew nearer realized it was Gelsey dancing by herself. With a smile, Evelyn wondered who else it would possibly be in that situation, and hurried over.

"Hello!" she called over the current song, and fought down the urge to immediately ask what she thought of the torte.

It took a moment for Gelsey to realise that someone was saying hello to her: it rarely happened. She pressed her hands over her heart and happily scurried over to Evelyn, wrapping the girl in an enthusiastic hug. "Evie! Oh! Your cake was so delicious, I had two pieces, even though it wasn't my birthday, and perhaps I should have shared, but I couldn't resist," she gushed. "How did you come up with such a clever combination of flavours! I would never have thought that, I would have thought about vanilla and nutella and strawberries, and this is why I am not a cook."

Evie couldn't help the huge sigh of relief that escaped her. If she was a perfectionist about anything, amidst her messy bedroom and perpetually disheveled appearance, it was her cooking.

"Oh, thank you," she tried to sound nonchalant, as if she hadn't been nervous about it all day. "Well, the cake was Zach's idea. Which is probably why it was so confusing," she said with a small, slightly neurotic smile as she remembered her stressful time in the kitchen. But at least it had paid off. "So how have you been? I see your hair is no longer green."

"It wasn't confusing, it was delicious and delightful, like a big surprise for my tongue! I love new combinations, I could eat almost anything, except for vegemite, I really don't like that much, but if you mix it with strawberry jam, it's almost bearable," Gelsey said smartly.

She sighed. "It isn't! But I was thinking pink for next week? At least for the week, just to be cheerful. I think the pink of muggle bubblegum, that's such a bright and fun shade, though it would be depressing if anyone tried to chew my hair," she noted with a sigh.

With an excited bounce, she took Evelyn's hand. "Are you having a lovely time? Have you danced?"

Evie couldn't hide the grin spreading across her face at the mention of bubblegum pink hair. "Oh, I think that would be lovely!" she said honestly. Well, sort of. Lovely maybe wasn't the right word, but she definitely thought Gelsey, if anyone, should have pink hair. "And you'll have to wear your antlers. Or do you have fairy wings? I think pink hair might be more of the fairy image," she smiled.

When Gelsey mentioned dancing, Evelyn stiffened a little. "Erm, no, no dancing," she said quickly. To put it nicely, she had two left feet, maybe even three. "Though I did have a rather interesting time dancing with Justin at the Yule Ball. I believe he did the cabbage patch, if you're familiar with it," she gave a rather un-ladylike snort.

"Well my antlers, naturally," she said with an enthusiastic nod. "Without them, it just wouldn't be the same! It would be like dying your hair the same yellow as the sun and then not standing next to the plants in the greenhouse, trying to trick them into thinking that you are sunshine." She nodded, bouncing on her toes. "Oh! I do have them! Wouldn't they be perfect with my hair! I need to owl my mum, she can send them special for the week from home, oh! Evie, you are brilliant!"

She froze. "You danced with Justin Finch-Fletchley?" she said her, voice raising up oddly. She swallowed, running a hand through her hand awkwardly. "I've never heard of the cabbage patch! How do you dance it, like you are a head of cabbage, with bouncing? I rather think that there should be a dance like a Devil's Snare, I'm sure that would be excellent, though it would involve a lot of grabbing, but for some people, that might be quite lovely and preferrable indeed, do you know a dance like that?" she asked, rushing her words more than usual.

Evelyn frowned when Gelsey's voice jumped up an octave. She had rarely seen her become awkward... from what Evelyn could guess, it was Gelsey just made other people that way. As she went on about the cabbage patch, though, she fought back a smile.

"No, its's... Well you sort of move your arms in a circle... it's..." Evelyn trailed off and glanced around quickly. Nobody was watching, or so she hoped. "You do this," she said hurriedly and demonstrated, rather ungracefully, exactly what the cabbage patch was. "I promise Justin is better," she smirked, glad that the lighting was low so that the redness in her face wouldn't show.

"I'm sure Justin Finch-Fletchley is divine at it," she stammered, nervously scanning the room for a moment. But she stared at the dancing Evelyn and clapped her hands in sheer delight. Gelsey squealed, instantly copying Evelyn. "Oh, but wouldn't it be better if you added in more, Evie!" she said excitedly, wiggling her hips in a circle, then her head, making her blonde hair fly about like a yellow blizzard. She tried with her hand tilted low and with her arms raised above her head pumping in that circle, then added in a hop. "Now I'm a lettuce bed, too!" she exclaimed, dizzily spinning a spiral.
