Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Ron Weasley and Ginny Weasley
WHEN: Wednesday afternoon, after quidditch practise
WHERE: The Pitch? On the way back to the school maybe?
SUMMARY: Ron and Ginny need some sibling bonding time.
RATING: PG?
STATUS: Complete

Quidditch had been brutal lately and as much as Ron complained about Harry's "Constant Vigilance" obsession, the team was playing better than they ever had. He'd noticed Ginny had gotten extremely good in the past year or so, improving so much from when they used to play on the grounds of the Burrow. He remembered her once mentioning she'd like to play Quidditch as a career and now he defintely thought it was possible (unlike his farfetched dream of playing for the Cannons).

It had been a while since him and Ginny had spent any time together. He missed when they were the only ones who hadn't started Hogwarts and it was just them at home. That had been the time when they'd been the closest. He still considered himself to be closer to her than any of his other siblings.

"Good practise, Gin." He called over to her as they landed from practise. "Brutal, but good."

Ginny waited to see if Harry wanted to talk to her along with Demelza and Natalie, but he waved her away as the two girls landed next to him to talk about the last drill. She gave him a wink, and then turned to Ron, falling to the ground and letting out a groan. "Excellent but I do want to strip all of my bones out of my body," she admitted.

"That actually sounds about perfect right now." Ron replied with a grin, grabbing a bottle of water off the bench at the side of the field and taking a long swig of it. He was exhausted and thirsty and sore. Setting the bottle back down on the bench after a few more sips, he dropped his broom on the grass and promptly collapsed beside it, spreading out completely on his back and looking up at the sky.

"Think I'll just stay here all night, thanks." He said with a grin, twisting his neck to look at his sister and then back up at the clouds.

"Nap," Ginny mumbled, not even registering how cold it was. She sighed. "Can't you just levitate me back to the dorm? I would bribe you to such a degree, your children's children would be set for life."

"What kind of bribe are we talking here?" He asked, teasingly, lifting his head and grinning and then, reluctantly, sitting up on the grass before stretching his arms and legs out a bit and cracking his neck. He groaned, the soreness of everything coming about.

"Let's go in. It's bloody cold, I'm sodding exhausted and I think I have some of Mum's chocolate chip cookies stashed away in my trunk." Finally he stood, picking up his broom again and grabbing the bottle of water on the bench for another sip and to bring it with him.

Ginny let out a mournful moan, but got to her feet and then climbed back on her broom. "Race you back," she said, practically laying on top of it and staring a slow fly back to the dorm. "I really think I wounded an internal organ today. That crash with Euan? Merlin's mother..."

Ron hopped on his broom again, groaning at the aches in his muscles. Harry was becoming a bloody slave driver! But he couldn't complain, really, he was playing better than he ever ad before and it was thanks to his best mate and those gruelling practises.

"That was nasty." Ron said, talking about Ginny's crash. I thought I heard bones snap it was so hard." He grimaced at the thought.

"I refuse to go to Madame Pomfrey unless it's direly necessary, I can shake it off. And I can always whimper to Booth to help fix me up, if I really need it," she said, letting the broom float her back to the castle. "Once we get this formation, it will be deadly wicked," she said with certainty. "It's just...getting it." What she didn't add was, being at the center of the pattern, one that professionals used--if she could pull it off, it would show any scout that she could go pro now. Harry thought so, or else he wouldn't have put this formation in. They had started to get it, towards the end, but now? Instead of feeling smug or confident or accomplished? All Ginny felt was exhausted.

Bone-drained, flat-out exhausted. Harry was going to give her a massage tonight, sod it. Full body. And that was after a soak in the tub.

"We would have won that last match if it wasn't for Harry getting knocked off his broom... sodding Slytherins." Ron said, nodding firmly and believing they were good enough to win every match thrown at them now. Harry hadd been training them to the bone and it was paying off.

"We're going to win the next one too. We bloody have to." He could see the castle approaching and he contemplated going and using the prefect's bathroom to take a long soak.

Ginny climbed off her broom when they reached the door. She could break down Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, their strengths, their weaknesses, player by player, position by position...all of it, all of her opinions, Harry's opinions, the discussions they had. But at the moment?

Ginny Weasley did not want to talk Quidditch. For once. Something inside of her was pounding with a furious hurt, she couldn't think about the game because it made her think of whatever injury was going on under her skin.

She nodded at Ron. "Absolutely bloody agreed." Tucking her broom under her arm, she rubbed at her eyes. "There are cookies? I didn't get cookies," she said with a touch of a sulk.

"Right, er, I was supposed to share them with you. Didn't quite make it that far." He said with a sheepish grin, rubbing the back of his neck and looking over at her. "Kind of ate most of them when the owl arrived. But there are still some left!" He added in to make sure she knew he'd give her some.

Ron was really starting to feel the cold and was glad when they reached the castle doors. "Thank Merlin." He mumbled stepping inside and into the warmth.

"So, how are you, Gin?" He asked sincerely.

"Tired," she admitted with a small grin, heading up towards Gryffindor Tower. "But otherwise...okay. Things are a bit--I don't know, like the calm before the storm I suppose. Just waiting for the holiday to finally arrive," she said with a sigh.

Ron nodded. "I know. I feel like Christmas is taking forever to get here." He grumbled slightly at that, everyone knowing that Christmas was Ron's favourite holiday. He really lit up at Christmas. There was nothing he liked more (except maybe snogging Hermione).

"I've still got to think of what to get everyone. Hermione especially. Topping that locket is going to be murder."

Ginny absently touched the diamond around her neck; she always hexed it into place before playing, and she lifted her wand to release the spell, letting it fall back into its natural dangle. "Don't think of it as 'topping.' I mean, if I did that, then I should expect some serious jewelry for the holiday," she said with a rueful smile as they climbed the stairs. "Just more of...what does she want? What does she need? Get her something that will make her completely happy, no matter if it's flashy or overtly romantic like the locket."

"She doesn't need anything because she's Hermione and Hermione always has everything she needs." ron mumbled, running a hand through his hair. Shopping for Hermione was not easy when it wasn't books he was getting her and he was not going to resort to a book. It wasn't good enough to just give her a book anymore.

"What if I got her an unbreakable quill and everlasting ink? Or a quill that automatically underlines important points or something." He thought of it and then he thought it sounded ridiculous. "Maybe not."

"A really nice quill costs a lot of galleons," Ginny pointed out, "it's a really nice gift. And for someone like Mione, who writes all the time? It's incredibly thoughtful." A part of Ginny sighed; Ron had been so insecure for so long about getting together with Hermione--she had hoped that he would now have confidence about her...but he still seemed unsure and hesitant. She gave him an encouraging smile; it would come in time, it would. Or else she'd hex confidence into him.

"Yeah?" He asked, raising his eyebrows in surprise. He thought it was a rubbish gift. Wasn't he supposed to be all romantic with gifts now? Was a quill romantic? He didn't think it was. "That's what I thought." He told her, rubbing his nose. "But that's not romantic, is it? Doesn't Hermione want romantic?" He shrugged, confused by it all. "Bah, I'm rubbish at this."

"Ron? Harry could buy jewelry all the time, which is lovely," she said patiently, her body screaming in pain as they kept climbing the stairs. Just a few flights more. "But I'd love...one of those Quidditch books, that goes over history or strategy, the huge thick hardcovers. It's what I'm passionate about, it's what I love, it's a gift that shows that Harry knows me and what matters to me," she explained. "I love this necklace so much, it's gorgeous and romantic--" and incredibly expensive "--but that book? Is also sweet and thoughtful, and therefore really romantic, too."

"Is that how you girls think?" Ron asked, suddenly kind of, just slightly understanding the female mind a bit better. He'd still never understand girls but at least he was learning bit my bit, yeah? He wasn't complete rubbish anymore... just slightly.

"So you're saying if I got Hermione a scrap of tissue but it had meaning behind it it'd still be romantic even though it was rubbish?"

Hesitating, Ginny explained, "That would depend on if the tissue had special significance, yes. If you once dried her tears with a tissue and that led to your first snog...sure. Now, if you buy something cheap and meaningless and then try to talk it into something special buy weaving a load of bunk around it? That's obnoxious," she said darkly, thinking of a certain previous boyfriend of hers as they stopped in front of the portrait of the Fat Lady. "Girls know when they're getting the shite end of a guy's laziness."

"Right... makes sense I guess. Unfortunately I haven't dried any of Hermione's tears with any tissues. I think I'll go with the quill thing, thanks, Gin." He said as he told the Fat Lady the password and let the portrait swing open. He waited for Ginny to go in before he did himself.

Using her broom as a crutch, Ginny climbed in to the portrait, groaning despite herself. She made a mental note to get her revenge on Euan in the next practise; for now, all she could think of was getting those cookies.

"You're welcome," she told him. Ginny paused. "I can't believe you hoarded the cookies, wanker."

Ron shrugged, grinning at her slightly. "Eh, sorry." He said. "You know how I am with food. I've got 'em upstairs if you want them now." He said, pointing up towards the dorms and trying to remember how many he had left. Probably 6 or 7.

He moved towards the stairs, pushing through the pain of his sore muscles. "Coming?" He asked, turning back and looking at her.

"No, Ronald, I was going to stand here and let you keep them all," Ginny said sarcastically, following him up. Seriously, Ron. Brothers.
