Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO; Melanie Roberts && Justin Finch-Fletchley
WHEN; Thursday, after lunch.
WHERE; An unused classroom in the third floor.
SUMMARY; Melanie really needs to talk to Justin... even if she'd rather be hiding under her bed.
RATING; PG, most likely.
WARNINGS; None.
STATUS; In Progress.

It had to be done. It needed to be done, because Justin couldn't find out some other way. It would be horrible if he did. Absolutely terrible. Horrible, horrible, horrible, so she had to do it. That was Melanie's mantra for the day as she made her way from the common room towards the empty classroom on the third floor, where she would be meeting Justin. She was walking at a slow pace, eyes fixed on the floor and Justin's note gripped tight in her right hand. Melanie had spent the worse time at Study Hall, not being able to concentrate on her homework or anything, for that matter, and the fact that Charlie was sitting just a couple of tables away and it had been exactly one week since, well, that had happened, were only managing to make her the more nervous. It was so bad that the minute the bell had gone off, Melanie had rushed to her room to lay down, forgetting all about lunch and just waiting for 1:30 to come around.

And now the time had come, and Melanie was cursing it under her breath for going so fast and getting her closer to her doom. Justin was like another brother for her and she knew she would have to tell him, eventually, but the idea seemed more appealing a week before when no one knew about Halloween Balls and Charlie hadn't asked her to be his date and situations like these could have been avoided for a little longer. But now that plan was ruined and, though she had no idea how exactly she was going to do this, she was determined to get it over with. Whatever happened. Though she would be eternally grateful if 'whatever' were something good...

With a deep breath, Melanie landed on the corridor of the third floor. She unfolded the overly-wrinkled piece of paper in her hand to read Justin's note for the hundredth time, before checking her watch and realising she was 5 minutes early. That was good, she thought to herself, as it would give her time to calm herself down before Justin arrived - or at least try to, because her nerves weren't being really helpful that day. Crumpling the paper and stuffing it in her robes' pocket, Melanie headed to the classroom in a quick pace, almost running into a Gryffindor girl as she went. She walked into the room - thankful that it was, indeed, empty - and took a seat on top of the desk. Out of nervousness, she took the note out of her pocket once more and smoothed it on top of her leg, reading it a few more times as she waited for Justin to arrive.

Melanie had been expecting yelling. A lot of yelling, actually, and maybe even a few curse words thrown in for good measure, but yelling nonetheless. So it was quite a surprise when all she got was a slightly raising of voice. And the disgusted tone, too, of course, which she had also expected, though that still didn't make it any easier for her to bear. Justin was hurt and it was her fault and now she had no idea how to fix it. The look on his face, though, was what almost made her snap and she had to look away and close her eyes tight to keep her emotions in check

"I'm sorry, Justin. I'm so sorry, I--" Melanie began, but stopped mid sentence when she realised she was lying. She was sorry - for springing this whole situation on Justin and ruining his good mood, for one, but not for kissing Charlie. If she were being honest, she would admit she had wanted Charlie to do that for a very long time. Well, not that, but to know that he never really hated her. For the longest time, Melanie had been convinced that the reason her friendship with Charlie had ended was because she had done something wrong. Of course, as time passed, she realised that it hadn't been at all her fault - Charlie was just being a total prat.

And now that prat was trying to redeem himself and Melanie was happy, because she had missed her friend and there was now this added bonus of dating - which was extremely weird and awkward, for her, but so much fun, too. But Justin probably didn't see it that way. Melanie really hoped Justin didn't hate her and that he would just hear her out (even if she had no idea what, exactly, she was supposed to say), because the thought of having to choose between the two of them scared her to no end.

"I-- I don't know what to say. I didn't know it would happen, it-it just did! And then. And then he asked me to the Ball and I said yes," Melanie finished in a rush. Better to come clean about everything while she could. She chanced a glance at Justin's face, her heart dropping as she noticed his expression hadn't really changed much. She refused to drop her gaze, though, but still wouldn't look at him directly, preferring to focus her eyes on his forehead instead. "I'm really, really, really sorry for this. I- I can go, if you want?"

"What? No," he replied as though her suggestion to leave was a stupid one. And at the moment Justin honestly thought it was. Did Melanie honestly think that dumping this in his lap and leaving would solve anything? If anything her leaving now would only irritate him further. Plus, if she left he wouldn't be able to give her his opinion on the matter.

It wasn't that he was angry to the point of yelling. It took a fair amount to get the boy to actually yell. And the fact that this wasn't really a situation where he thought he had the right to do so he refrained. He understood that Melanie had enough trouble sharing this bit of information with him so yelling wouldn't solve anything. But that didn't stop his natural instinct to raise his voice to accommodate the irritation that was pulsing through his body.

"But honestly, Melanie, from where I'm sitting this is a really stupid idea." He offered flat out. "It's like you're asking to be hurt for no other reason than to cling to some childhood friendship that died years ago. Are you telling me he suddenly had a change of heart?"

Justin was greatly aware of Melanie's past with Charles Vaisey. He remembered the trivial tears and the childish cruelty. And on top of that Justin also had his own personal reasons for not liking, or trusting the slytherin prat. But considering this wasn't about him he figured it wouldn't be wise to bring them up. Justin was ultimately more concerned to the damage this little...affair would entice and the unnecessary drama that could be avoided.

Melanie wanted to protest against Justin's argument because, yes, she did truly believe that Charlie had changed for the better. Maybe it was her immense lack of judgement or simple wishful thinking, but the small part of her that had held onto the idea that Charlie had never really hated her told her - quite loudly - that she was making the right decision. But then she reminded herself that from Justin's point of view, the whole situation probably seemed twice as bizarre as it did from hers. And that was saying a lot, already. Still, she had no idea how to explain herself and make him understand that she wasn't crazy for making such choices.

Justin wasn't yelling, nor was he telling her to leave, so Melanie thought it safe to take a seat again. She did so warily, as though any sudden movement would make Justin go off, and if the situation hadn't been so nerve wrecking, she would have found it oddly hilarious. Justin looked calm enough and willing to hear her out and that managed to calm her a bit as she tried to explain herself. "I know, I understand that, but I just..." she stopped again, groaning in frustration. It was just as well that Melanie could talk non-stop about anything in particular, but when it came to serious matters, her ability to form full and somewhat coherent sentences just disappeared, leaving her a blabbing mess.

"He said he fancied me," she tried once more, quietly, her eyes fixed on the floor again. "And he told me that he's fancied me for a long time. And I don't know, okay? I don't know if that's true, but he sounded sincere and, like. I understand what you're telling me, because I've been thinking a lot about that and-and I'm kind of scared. I don't think he's lying, but." He could be, she wanted to add, but couldn't bring herself to actually say the words. She had given that particular thing so much thought, specially the night after she had talked to Charlie. It was true that he had sounded honest, but what if it was a joke? Based on their past history, that didn't seem too far-fetched. Melanie took a deep breath and willed the tears not to fall - if she started crying, calming her down would be impossible.

"But...." he attempted to get her to finish the statement but Justin lacked the patience and finished it himself, "He very well could be lying." The seventh year exhaled heavily and shook his head as he gave the empty classroom a scan.

"Charles Vaisey is not some one you should be getting yourself mixed up with." He shifted his weight so that he could rest his elbows on his knees for....effect as opposed to comfort. "I know you, Mel. You're eager to please and Vaisey's always been that one person you've wanted to get on your side ever since he became one of the Slytherin pod-people." He offered a shrug as he continued, "I'm going to be flat-out honest with you. It's not a good idea, and I am not going to support it. He's an arse and if you get involved with him just because he say he fancy's you; you're stupid."

Perhaps calling her stupid was .... stupid, but at that point Justin felt strongly about his opinion. Anyone male or female, who got involved with someone who treated them like rubbish for years wasn't very bright. The entire situation seemed fishy and downright ridiculous. And obviously, if Melanie had felt the need to tell Justin what was going on, Justin figured the girl wanted to know his opinion on the matter – so he shared it.
