The tension Melanie was feeling was starting to get overwhelming. She couldn't sit still, feeling all anxious and jittery, her legs bouncing in place as she tried to shake off her nerves and the awkward feeling of having Justin throwing questioning glances her way. That was certainly not making things any easier. Even if she would have wanted to (and she didn't), she couldn't really meet Justin's eyes, because if she finally told him - and her mind would quickly remind her that it was when, not if - the look of disappointment she was sure would appear on his face would totally crush her.
"That's," she started saying, but paused for a moment to clear her throat. Giving up on trying to stay still, Melanie jumped off the desk in one quick movement and began pacing, her teeth worrying over her lower lip as they usually did when she was uncomfortable. "That's good. And I'm good. Really! I'm feeling great, fantastic. Yeah, just you know..." Melanie trailed off and turned to give him a half-arsed shrug and a smile, before resuming her pacing. Merlin, this was torture. She should just say what she had to say and get it over with, because no matter how much she dragged it out, the outcome would end up being the same.
Steeling herself to finally tell him, Melanie stopped pacing and opened her mouth, only to back out at the last second. "Oh, hey! Did you hear about the Ball?" The words were out before she could stop them and she slapped her forehead, whether it was because she had asked the stupidest question ever or for chickening out, she had no idea. "Duh, of course you have. Who hasn't? That's what everyone's talking about, now; what they're wearing, who they're going with and even the food! It's funny how it takes a Halloween Ball to get all the school in an uproar!" Melanie paused for only a second to regain her breath, before going off again, all the while pacing and looking everywhere but at Justin. "And well, okay, I can't really talk, because I'm excited about it, too! I have a date! Did I tell you about that? Well, no, I don't think I did because that's kind of the reason why I asked you to meet me here and I'm really nervous right now, but I'm going to tell you anyway. And, oh god, Justin. Please, don't hate me, but I kissed Charles Vaisey! Twice!" There. She had said it. And Melanie felt the slightest bit relieved that it was finally out in the open, but the bigger part of her was absolutely terrified of what was coming next.
