Who: Penelope Clearwater, Open
When: Lunch, December 20, 1998
Where: The Leaky Cauldron, Diagon Alley
Rating: G
Summary: Nostalgia for fish & chips, and maybe running into someone from the past

Stepping over the threshold into The Leaky Cauldron, Penelope unravelled her hand-knit scarf and shook the moisture from it. The place smelled the same and sounded the same - a melange of fried food, yeasty ale and the noisy chatter of its patrons.

Finding a table, Penelope already knew what she wanted to order. A large plate of crispy fish and chips with a pint of hard cider is just what was called for on a winter’s day. She could have gone to any pub for that - muggle or wizard. However, coming home to Britain made her crave familiarity and ever since her parents gave her that journal she was nostalgic.

Perhaps she would run into a friendly face while in Diagon Alley, or so she thought. It was the same, but the faces in the crowds were unfamiliar and there hadn’t even been a red-headed Weasley about. Although she could have gone into Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, but the number of people she had been able to see through the windows made the place seem almost claustrophobic inside.

Penelope looked up, distracted from her thoughts, and her server was standing to take her order. As soon as she was alone again, she looked around the pub and her eyes met with someone else’s.

"Percy! Yeah, that's the one!" George cheered a little, grinning like a Cheshire cat. He loved to amuse others as well as amuse himself - a billion times better than making someone cry. Unless it was tears of laughter.

George took the invitation and sat down, shaking his head. "Nah, just ducked... sorry, goosed out of the shop to fetch us some lunch." That was generally the way with the Twins - they tended to refer to themselves as a collective. "But, no great rush, really. Fred and Verity can wait."

Penelope's food came out and George eyed it with interest. "Looks good. Mind if I..." He commented almost absently, trailing off before pinching a chip.

"So how have you been, Penelope?" George asked, genuinely curious. "What's new in the world of Penny?"

She glowered slightly at George when he picked off one of her chips from her plate. It was only-child syndrome for Penelope - she rarely shared her food.

"Just came back from Romania, actually. I'm in Wales now, at the Welsh Reserve."

Penelope sighed, still disappointed about not getting the Scotland position. They were looking for someone with more 'experience'.

"So, I'm just getting settled there and my parents sent me one of those new journals where you can interact with anyone who has a journal as well? Quite handly, actually."

Penelope took a sip of her cider. "And how is the joke and prank business fairing? How's Fred, incidentally?"

At the slight glower George just smiled innocently. Glowers tended to have no affect on him - unless they came from his mother, of course.

"Ooo, in amongst the Welsh Greens now, hey?" George knew a little more about dragons than the average person who didn't work with them thanks to his brother Charlie's fascination with them. He noticed the little sigh and wasn't sure if it was his place to say something. Wasn't she happy being closer to home and family and friends?

"Yeah, very handy." George agreed. "Although I think they could be tweaked just a little bit." Both Twins seemed to have a thing for improving on products and making them better.

The server came back, realising George was staying for a bit and put his food on a plate and Fred and Verity's lunches in bags. "Thanks lovely," he thanked the server and started munching on some of his own chips (he has skipped out on the fish today, just opting for chips because they were easier to eat on the go).

"Mmm, booming," he replied, swallowing a mouthful of chip. A little grin of pride came to his face when he talked about his shop. It was his and Fred's creation - it was only right to be proud of it. "Fred's good. He is in his element at this time of year. We just shove him out in the back room and he keeps creating new products. You should stop by some time."

She nodded at the remark of the Welsh Greens, which were gorgeous creatures. Then again, Penelope thought all dragons were beautiful.

"Merlin, I can't imagine what you two have cooked up in the means of 'tweaking' the journals. Aren't you already under regulation for your Daydream Pills, or whatever they are?"

Penelope smiled at the invitation.

"I had meant to stop by, but your shop was so busy inside I was afraid of getting lost in the fray. This time of year turns the average shopper into a blooming maniac, I swear."

"Daydream Charms, patent pending." He replied automatically with a nod. The patent pending status was a bit of a sore point for George, who secretly thought the only reason why they still hadn't obtained the patent already was because they were known blood traitors. "As for the journals... well, we'll probably have something out in the new year so you'll just have to wait to see what we have 'cooked up'."

George listened and nodded in understanding, knowing that crowds were a little off-putting for some people. Not George though, he and Fred both loved attention too much to shy away from crowds. "Certainly does." He agreed, popping another chip in his mouth. "But, you know, invitation is always open. Anytime. Usually one of us is there, if not both of us."
