dari and ash talk
WHO: Dari Davison and Ashleigh Barton
WHAT: Dari finally finds out what's up with Ash
WHEN: May 2006; Shortly after this
WHERE: Outside the Gryff common room
RATING: PG

Dari knew something was up with Ashleigh. Anyone who knew the girl would. They might not share any of the same lessons, since they were in different years, but Dari hadn't seen her friend in the halls or even at meals in several days and she was starting to worry a little, especially when she heard through the grapevine that Ed wasn't exactly behaving like himself, either. It didn't take much for her to connect the two. The question now was why hadn't Ashleigh told her if something had happened with Ed? It wasn't like them not to talk to one another. After all, Dari had been sharing nearly everything with the Gryffindor lately. It wasn't like she could really confide in Jeremy these days, not about everything that was bothering her, anyway.

She'd finally had enough of waiting for the girl to come to her, though. Enough was enough and she was going to find out what was going on if she had to find a way to break into Gryffindor. Fortunately, it didn't quite come to that.  Dari managed to catch a glimpse through the portrait hole as a first year came through.

"Ashleigh Elizabeth Barton!" she called loudly, using the girl's full name for emphasis. "You get out here and talk to me RIGHT NOW!" Maybe that wasn't the best approach to take, but Dari was starting to get worried. She could just crawl through the portrait hole if it came to that, but Ashleigh's housemates probably wouldn't appreciate a Ravenclaw in their common room very much. Not that it would stop her, but it would probably be better if Ash would just come out instead.

"I don't know how to do this, Dari," she protested. "I don't know how to be a mum. Look at my mum. She hates me. This is so bloody... fucked."

Rather than continuing to whine, Ashleigh leaned into the brunette and forced herself to take several deep breaths. Nothing was going to be helped by her getting upset, and she tried to remind herself of that fact. If anything, crying was only going to make her feel worse. Actually, it already had. The churning in her stomach had increase substantially during the last few minutes.

"I'm going to have to head back to the common room," she told the other girl suddenly. "Ollie is probably waiting for me... he's probably worried. He'd gone to get some food."

The mere thought of her male best friend gave her the reason to pull herself together, and she began to wipe at her tear-stained face.

"We're getting a flat when we get out of here," she murmured. "He's going to help with the baby. I feel selfish for letting him do that."

"You are not your mother," Dari argued firmly. "You are kind and giving and amazing and your kid if going to love you more than anything." Dari understood how Ashleigh felt. She had a crappy relationship with her own mother. She knew that if anything, though, she'd learned how a parent shouldn't treat her children. She was sure Ashleigh had learned a similar lesson from her mother.

"Ollie wouldn't let you go through this alone any more than I would," she continued when the blonde mentioned Ollie. "We both love you far too much, Ash. We'll make sure you get through this."

She knew Ollie wouldn't be thrilled if he returned to find Ashleigh missing and she knew Ash needed to eat, so she got to her feet then, grabbing Ashleigh's hand to help her up.

"C'mon. Maybe we can beat him back if we hurry," she said, offering her friend a reassuring smile.

Ashleigh nodded when the brunette assured her once again that she was going to be a great mother. She wasn't as sure as her friend seemed to be, but she knew that arguing with her was pointless. After all, if their positions were reversed, Ashleigh would be just as certain that Dari would make a great mother.

"I know, but... he's going to give up everything to help me raise this child... a child he shouldn't even be held responsible for. That's... I don't know, Dari. It feels selfish to let him do that. He won't listen, though. He just says that he's only ever wanted to have a family with me..."

Truth be told, that was what made her feel guilty. Ollie had true feelings for her, and she was taking advantage of that fact.

Ashleigh allowed Dari to help her up. Once they were both on their feet, though, she wrapped the Ravenclaw in a tight hug. "Thanks, Dari," she murmured. Knowing that they needed to get back, she didn't linger in the embrace. She simply wanted to show her how grateful she was to have her as a friend.

"Of course he won't listen," Dari said with a smile. "It's in the best friend handbook. We're quite stubborn when it comes to being there for our Ashleigh."

Dari knew Ashleigh felt bad about what Ollie was giving up, but she honestly understood it. She'd do the same. If it was Jeremy faced with raising a baby on his own, she'd do the same in a heartbeat.

She returned the brief hug Ashleigh pulled her into, hugging her back just as tightly. "I love you, Ash," she murmured. "You're going to get through this, I promise." Dari wasn't sure exactly how everything would turn out, but she could still make that promise with confidence.

"So, did I tell you what an idiot my cousin is?" she asked, looping her arm through Ashleigh's as they began the walk back towards Gryffindor tower. What better way to cheer her best mate up than with a rundown of all the gossip she'd missed over the last several days?
