dari and ash talk
WHO: Dari Davison and Ashleigh Barton
WHAT: Dari finally finds out what's up with Ash
WHEN: May 2006; Shortly after this
WHERE: Outside the Gryff common room
RATING: PG

Dari knew something was up with Ashleigh. Anyone who knew the girl would. They might not share any of the same lessons, since they were in different years, but Dari hadn't seen her friend in the halls or even at meals in several days and she was starting to worry a little, especially when she heard through the grapevine that Ed wasn't exactly behaving like himself, either. It didn't take much for her to connect the two. The question now was why hadn't Ashleigh told her if something had happened with Ed? It wasn't like them not to talk to one another. After all, Dari had been sharing nearly everything with the Gryffindor lately. It wasn't like she could really confide in Jeremy these days, not about everything that was bothering her, anyway.

She'd finally had enough of waiting for the girl to come to her, though. Enough was enough and she was going to find out what was going on if she had to find a way to break into Gryffindor. Fortunately, it didn't quite come to that.  Dari managed to catch a glimpse through the portrait hole as a first year came through.

"Ashleigh Elizabeth Barton!" she called loudly, using the girl's full name for emphasis. "You get out here and talk to me RIGHT NOW!" Maybe that wasn't the best approach to take, but Dari was starting to get worried. She could just crawl through the portrait hole if it came to that, but Ashleigh's housemates probably wouldn't appreciate a Ravenclaw in their common room very much. Not that it would stop her, but it would probably be better if Ash would just come out instead.

Ashleigh knew it was only a matter of time before one of her professors grew tired of her unexplained absences, but she simply wasn't ready to return to the real world. Life outside of Gryffindor Tower was complicated. She preferred the simplicity of sitting in front of the fire and sleeping in the arms of her male best friend.

She was sitting in the common room, waiting for Ollie to return with the food he'd made her promise to eat, when she heard her full named bellowed from the hallway. Her head snapped up, and her eyes locked with the brunette standing on the other side of the portrait hole. Though a large part of her wanted to avoid this conversation at all costs, she knew that wasn't an option.

Pushing herself out of the chair she'd been sitting in, she headed for the portrait hole. It had closed by the time she got there, but it opened again. The Fat Lady grumbled her annoyance about the continuous in and out, but that was easily ignored.

"Hey," she greeted, not knowing what else to say.

It probably wasn't the explanation her friend was looking for, but it was the best she could do at the moment.

There was definitely no avoiding this conversation. Dari was stubborn when she wanted to be and she was determined to get some answers from her best friend. After all, it wasn't like her to just hide in her common room for days at a time.

"What going on?" she jumped right into her interrogation once Ashleigh came out. "Did you have a fight with Ed? I heard he's in a rotten mood."

It probably wasn't the idea way to get her friend to talk, but Dari was worried and she wasn't in a mood to beat around the bush. She wanted to know what was wrong so she could make it better.

Ashleigh wished that she and Ed had merely fought. She missed him horribly, and the mere mention of his name caused her stomach to churn violently. It looked like she would be breaking her promise. There was no way she could eat, now.

One of the voices inside of her head told her that Ed was in a rotten mood because he missed her. She instantly wished she could rush to him and make everything alright, again, but the other voice in her head quickly reminded her that it would be selfish to do so. After all, bringing him back into this would ruin his future.

"We broke up," she told the brunette before she could question her further. "It's over. We're through."

As she spoke, she knew that wasn't going to be explanation enough. The Ravenclaw was going to want to know why they'd broken up... everyone was going to want to know.

"What? Why? What happened?" Dari's eyes widened and her jaw dropped a little as Ashleigh told her she and Ed had broken up. How was that even possible? They were perfect together!

Even as she questioned her, Dari moved forward and pulled her best friend into a warm, tight hug. No wonder she'd been avoiding the world. She could just imagine how horrible Ash was feeling right now.

"It's going to be okay," she babbled on, not waiting for an answer to her questions. "I promise, it's going to be okay."

Ashleigh had expected her friend to react this way, but that didn't make it any easier when her expression changed to one of utter shock and confusion. After all, Dari wasn't the only one wondering how it was possible. Ashleigh often wondered the same thing. After all, they had been perfect together.

"I... We just..."

She leaned into the brunette when she pulled her into a tight hug, and her eyes instantly filled with tears. It made little sense, but it was almost impossible for her to keep it together while the Ravenclaw worked to comfort her.

"It's not," she protested so softly she might not have been heard. "Nothing is ever going to be okay ever again."

Dari pulled her friend tighter into the embrace as she begun to cry. She still didn't know what had happened, but it felt more important to comfort the girl for a moment. She knew she'd certainly been upset enough over Jeremy and his girlfriend recently that it had sometimes been hard to put it into words. She expected Ashleigh was feeling much the same way right now.

A few moments later, though, she pulled back a little bit.

"Can you tell me what happened?" she questioned her softly. A part of her was insanely curious about what could have possibly broke Ashleigh and Ed up. Another part of her was hoping that if she knew everything, maybe she'd be able to do something to help her friend.

Ashleigh buried her face in the brunette's shoulder as she fought against the sobs that wracked her body. She couldn't remember the last time she'd gone a full twenty-four hours without crying, but it seemed that she still hadn't run out of tears. She wished she would be unable to cry for a few days.

Her head shook when the other girl pulled back and asked if she could tell her what had happened.

"Not here," she answered with a brief look at their surroundings. "I don't want... too many people..."

She needed to think of a lie to tell everyone else, but she fully intended to tell Dari the truth. The last thing she needed was someone overhearing. News traveled unbelievably quick at Hogwarts. If anyone else found out... she didn't know what she would do.

"All right," Dari said, nodding her head. She chewed thoughtfully on her lip for a moment before grabbing Ashleigh's hand and pulling her toward her own common room. There was a large closet not far from the entrance. No one ever used it, she knew, and there were still a few pillows and things in there from the last time she'd been in there with Jeremy.

Moments later, they'd reached their destination and she was still holding Ashleigh's hand as she pulled her down onto the cushions.

Rather than push for an explanation again, though, she just sat there and waited, giving Ashleigh's hand a brief comforting squeeze. It was obvious the blonde was really upset. Dari wanted her to talk to her, but she thought she might need a moment first.

Ashleigh forgot that she was meant to be waiting for Ollie when Dari took her by the hand, and she followed the girl without protest. She worried, for a moment, that the brunette was leading her to her own common room, but that worry dissolved when they entered a rather large closet instead.

Judging from the pillows and things that were strewn around, it had been a fairly decent place to snog. She thought briefly about the classroom she and Ed had gone to when they wanted privacy...

Her gaze moved to her best friend as they sunk onto the cushions, and she simply stared at her for several long moments.

"I'm pregnant," she finally told the other girl. "I ended it because I'm pregnant. If he... if he knew, he would give up everything... his future... his dreams of being an auror... everything, and he would hate me the same way mother hates father... the same way mother hates me. I couldn't stand that..."

She made it through the explanation without really crying, but a few silent tears did fall onto her cheeks.

"You can't tell him," she immediately added. "If you tell him... he won't listen... promise you won't tell..."

The closet had been a nice place to snog, among other things, but Dari tried not to think about that. She didn't want to think about all the time she and Jeremy had spent in here before Nic had come back to Hogwarts. If she did, she might fall apart and that definitely wasn't what Ashleigh needed.

She opened her mouth to speak several times as Ashleigh told her what was going on, but each time she closed it again, forcing herself to patiently wait for the girl to finish. When she did, it was almost as though she could read Dari's mind with how she was begging her not to tell Ed.

Dari didn't agree with what Ash was doing, not at all. She wanted to tell her that Ed wasn't her mother, but she could tell Ashleigh was determined and the last thing she wanted to do was argue with her when she was like this.

"Okay, I won't tell," she agreed quietly. She wasn't sure what else to say, so she pulled the blonde into another hug. "It's going to be all right, Ash," she reassured her. "I know this is really messed up, but we're going to get you through this."

Ashleigh breathed a sigh of relief when Dari promised that she wouldn't tell Ed. She hadn't taken that possibility into consideration when she'd given her the truthful explanation for why she'd broken up with him and was glad to hear that she had nothing to worry about.

"I don't think it will be," she answered with a shake of her head. "How can it be? I'm... I'm having a baby, Dari. I've... I've lost Ed. I just... it hurts so bad... I miss him so much... I can't sleep or eat or think... I feel like I can't breathe without him... and NEWTs... I don't know what I'm going to do."

Ollie had been by her side since he'd found out about the breakup, but Ashleigh hadn't let herself babble to him the way she was currently babbling to Dari. For some reason, she hadn't felt comfortable breaking down like this in front of him.

Dari didn't exactly agree with Ashleigh's decision not to tell Ed about the baby, but she loved her best friend and she would never betray her confidence by repeating something she didn't want repeated. Whether she agreed with it or not, this was Ashleigh's decision and she was going to support her no matter what.

"I know," Dari murmured. She understood how Ashleigh felt. "We're going to get you through this, though." She paused and pulled back just enough to look at her friend. "Do you want to keep the baby?" she asked her. She couldn't imagine doing anything else if she'd been in her friends position, but once again, she would support Ashleigh, no matter what.

"I'm here, okay?" she was reassuring her a moment later. "I'm not going anywhere and you're going to get through this. I'll help. I'll do whatever I can."

"Like I have a choice..."

Ashleigh shook her head and wiped at the tears that were falling onto her cheeks. For someone else, that might have been a possible solution. She wasn't capable of terminating a pregnancy, though. No matter how small, there was a baby growing inside of her. She couldn't kill that baby.

"I can't... if it was that simple, I could've just... and everything would be alright... I would still have Ed. I couldn't do that, Dari. I just... I couldn't."

She nodded when the brunette assured her that she would be by her side. Ashleigh knew the promise was sincere, but she didn't see how the other girl could keep it. She would eventually have to return to Hogwarts, after all.

"Thanks, Dari," she murmured in spite of what she was thinking. "I just... I know I'll have Ollie, but... this is... I'm going to be a rotten parent."

Dari nodded. She couldn't have done anything else in the same position, either. Even when she'd questioned her, she'd been sure that Ashleigh would feel the same way.

She knew she would have to return to school in the fall, but Dari was still determined to be there for her friend. They'd have all summer and they'd have holidays. She'd owl her every day.

"You are not," she protested vehemently when Ashleigh said she'd be a horrible parent. "You're going to be a brilliant mum." Dari would have probably been feeling much the same if she'd been the one dealing with an unexpected pregnancy, but that didn't matter at the moment. She knew beyond any doubt that Ash was going to be an amazing parent.

"I don't know how to do this, Dari," she protested. "I don't know how to be a mum. Look at my mum. She hates me. This is so bloody... fucked."

Rather than continuing to whine, Ashleigh leaned into the brunette and forced herself to take several deep breaths. Nothing was going to be helped by her getting upset, and she tried to remind herself of that fact. If anything, crying was only going to make her feel worse. Actually, it already had. The churning in her stomach had increase substantially during the last few minutes.

"I'm going to have to head back to the common room," she told the other girl suddenly. "Ollie is probably waiting for me... he's probably worried. He'd gone to get some food."

The mere thought of her male best friend gave her the reason to pull herself together, and she began to wipe at her tear-stained face.

"We're getting a flat when we get out of here," she murmured. "He's going to help with the baby. I feel selfish for letting him do that."

"You are not your mother," Dari argued firmly. "You are kind and giving and amazing and your kid if going to love you more than anything." Dari understood how Ashleigh felt. She had a crappy relationship with her own mother. She knew that if anything, though, she'd learned how a parent shouldn't treat her children. She was sure Ashleigh had learned a similar lesson from her mother.

"Ollie wouldn't let you go through this alone any more than I would," she continued when the blonde mentioned Ollie. "We both love you far too much, Ash. We'll make sure you get through this."

She knew Ollie wouldn't be thrilled if he returned to find Ashleigh missing and she knew Ash needed to eat, so she got to her feet then, grabbing Ashleigh's hand to help her up.

"C'mon. Maybe we can beat him back if we hurry," she said, offering her friend a reassuring smile.

Ashleigh nodded when the brunette assured her once again that she was going to be a great mother. She wasn't as sure as her friend seemed to be, but she knew that arguing with her was pointless. After all, if their positions were reversed, Ashleigh would be just as certain that Dari would make a great mother.

"I know, but... he's going to give up everything to help me raise this child... a child he shouldn't even be held responsible for. That's... I don't know, Dari. It feels selfish to let him do that. He won't listen, though. He just says that he's only ever wanted to have a family with me..."

Truth be told, that was what made her feel guilty. Ollie had true feelings for her, and she was taking advantage of that fact.

Ashleigh allowed Dari to help her up. Once they were both on their feet, though, she wrapped the Ravenclaw in a tight hug. "Thanks, Dari," she murmured. Knowing that they needed to get back, she didn't linger in the embrace. She simply wanted to show her how grateful she was to have her as a friend.

"Of course he won't listen," Dari said with a smile. "It's in the best friend handbook. We're quite stubborn when it comes to being there for our Ashleigh."

Dari knew Ashleigh felt bad about what Ollie was giving up, but she honestly understood it. She'd do the same. If it was Jeremy faced with raising a baby on his own, she'd do the same in a heartbeat.

She returned the brief hug Ashleigh pulled her into, hugging her back just as tightly. "I love you, Ash," she murmured. "You're going to get through this, I promise." Dari wasn't sure exactly how everything would turn out, but she could still make that promise with confidence.

"So, did I tell you what an idiot my cousin is?" she asked, looping her arm through Ashleigh's as they began the walk back towards Gryffindor tower. What better way to cheer her best mate up than with a rundown of all the gossip she'd missed over the last several days?
