Application Post
So, you want to apply to [info]marvel_nextgen? Great!

A few things first.

Alternate Universe and Time displaced kids are welcome. As are totally original characters. Not every mutant or Avenger is going to have parents that were mutants or Avengers. So feel free to use your imagination!

While we gladly accept applications for X-Men and Avengers, we encourage applications for Eternals, Defenders, Inhumans, Asgardians, and other characters off the beaten path.

We also welcome Canon kids. IE Franklin Richards, Luna Maximoff and older versions of any super kid. Like say, Power Pack, Valeria Richards, Kevin Masterson, Ahura Boltagon and the like. Also adult versions of any Canon Teenagers are welcome. As are canon characters and villains in their adult incarnations. (Ie: Julian Keller, Kate Bishop, Tommy Shepherd, Billy Kaplan, Nico Minoru...)

We're taking advantage of the wonderful sliding timeline policy of Marvel, so if your character's birth date/age doesn't quite work out, it can easily be modified.

Please give us at least 24 hours to look at your application. We will email you when the app is approved. Once it's accepted, you can jump right in. If we have any problems or questions with any applications we'll contact you for clarification.

In some situations a sample with another player may be required.

The game focuses on the next generation of heroes and the kids are the ones out being the superheroes. The adults for the most part are starting to retire and passing the torch to the kids, so if you are looking to play an adult, be advised that in this game they are mostly support roles and plot devices.

The process:
The first step is to fill out an application.(Please check with the team admin to see if there is room on the team you want to join)
Your application will be reviewed by the mods.
In the case that you are applying for a character on a team, the application will be reviewed by the team members.
If your character is related to another character in the game, the relatives will also get to review the app.
A mod will notify you if it has been accepted, declined or if more information is needed.
The mods may ask you to clarify certain things (concept, powers, purpose) in your app. This is nothing personal, it is just the mods and team members trying to better understand the app.

Some basic rules:

1. If you are apping a sibling/parent of a character in the game, the player(s) of those characters get approval/veto rights on the app. We require you to discuss the character idea with the other players before apping the character you want to play. If you don't know who is playing a certain character please ask a mod. The list of characters and their relatives is here

2. If you are apping a cousin or other distant relative to a character/characters already in game, the player(s) of the character gets to review the app and provide feedback.

If you can't contact a player, feel free to contact the mods and we'll answer any questions you have!

3. Please do not give names, gender or ages to siblings of canon-pairing characters. This is to allow greater flexibility for people interested in picking up a sibling or parent. A vague reference like "Character X has three other siblings." is fine.

It is okay to give names, gender and ages to siblings of characters who have non-canon parents.

4. Apping Characters just to "hook up with someone" - Please do it somewhere else. This is a game for people who are interested in more than just hooking their character up with another character. While it is natural for characters to start dating and otherwise participate in physical relationships, it should not be the main purpose of the character and it is not the main focus of the game.

We accept applications for heroes, villains, parents and other adults.

We will accept applications for Original NPCs (Next generation of - Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Masters of Evil, Serpent Societly, MLF, etc) seen here.

Notes:
Xavier's is not publicly known as a place for mutants. There is an underground in place to direct mutants to Xavier's.

Avengers are listed in the phone book and publicly known. Characters can directly contact them.

Player (nickname, handle)/ LJ: [info]terrykun
Email: tj_mccarron@yahoo.com
AIM (if you have one): GoggleBoy83
Character Name: John Michael Ketch
Character LJ (if applicable):

Physical description (face, build, weight): http://www.animevice.com/ash/18-16698/images/
Age: 24

PB: Scans of Ash, from The Animatrix - Detective Story, for now.

Abilities: "Sin Sight" - eye contact with an individual reveals all the sins they have committed in their life (see below). Limited ability to channel hellfire into bullets, heightened by being used in tandom with firearms that have 'history'. Both the age of the firearm, what it was used for, and who used it, contribute to the 'history' of the firearm.
Office is equipped with technomantic arrays he uses to assist in investigations; carries a cellphone that can disrupt other communications.
Bachelor's degree in business administration, law minor. Certified in computer forensics.
Has moderate skill in fighting with his eyes shut or covered. (See details on Sin Sight below)
Weaknesses and flaws: With the exception of his Sin Sight, John's powers are sporadic at best. Experimenting with his ability to channel hellfire has only about a 1:10 success ratio. He also understands very little of the technomantic equipment passed on to him by his mother, save for how to keep most of it operational (most of the time). He also tends to operate as a loner, and when forced into working with others, has difficulty accepting others' plans.
John's Sin Sight is his most powerful talent, but also his most difficult to manage. He cannot turn it off, and it works immediately. As soon as he makes direct contact with an individual, he sees all their sins, through a jumbled mix of their perspective and third person, mixed with hellfire and at times distorted. The mental impact of the point of contact can at times be disorienting, leaving him shaken.
This forces him to impair his vision at all times, whether with dark glasses or low-brimmed hats. This puts him at a distinct disadvantage at night and in poorly lit areas.

Character location/Home: Lives in and works out of his office/apartment in Chinatown.
Alignment: "Professional first, hero second."; Frequently works with the Avengers when not on cases
Relatives: Daniel Ketch (father), Mary Lebow (mother), various ancestral Spirits of Vengeance

Backstory: John grew up with both of his parents dealing with the recoil of the lifestyles their respective supernatural abilities had brought to them, and they did their best to give him a normal upbringing. Aside from occasionally having to whip out the old enchanted chain or some technomantic imps, they succeeded. At age six however, John started having blackouts, refusing to explain why. After having him examined by Stephen Strange and Jennifer Kale, John's 'sin sight' was revealed. He had been keeping it a secret from his parents, due to seeing how much they seemed to want to live peacefully.

A forged medical slip for a light sensitivity and plenty of sunglasses helped him avoid eye contact as he got older. He gradually began discovering his ability to channel hellfire, however sporadically, as well. For his part, John was able to live a fairly normal life, while still garnering a respect and understanding for the supernatural. As he got older, becoming an afficionado of film noir, he considered work as a detective, largely relating to taking on cases that the police would dismiss as being impossible, or crazed ramblings from an individual. His parents encouraged this, and he pursued the appropriate college courses in forensics and running his own business. His father's contacts in the hero community also helped him learn about the criminal mind-set, and more supernatural elements.

John has had his agency running for about two years now, opening it shortly after graduation.

How do you plan to introduce the character to the game?: Some character or NPC needs help solving a theft of an object (or individual) with supernatural powers.

What are you planning to do with this character?: I'd like to see his investigative skills be put to use for a variety of clients, maybe get chased by some supernatural types, and pal around with the other magical or street level heroes.

"This... this can't be! I told you already! DEMONS killed my husband!" The woman insisted, smacking a hand down on John's desk.

John shook his head, leaning back in his chair with his hat pulled over his eyes. "What happened, ma'am, is that word of your belief in the supernatural hit your husband's business circles." He grunted, pouring himself a shot of whiskey. "Combined with the fact that he was refusing to make some deals he'd already verbally all but sworn into, and he had some enemies with what they thought was an easy cover. And..." He sighed. "And you took the bait. If you'd actually called the police, like you told me you did, they would have identified this as arson and an overly showy murder, plus the perp you thought was a demon, actually was a pro wearing a fright mask."

"But... but.. he was blown apart... that HAD to be magic!" She feebly protested, manicured fingers picking at the silk scarf around her neck. There was a look on her face of frustration and disappointment.

John's eyes rolled, unseen. "He was professionally and thoroughly dismembered, with some pigs' blood thrown around to make it look even showier. The 'hellfire' you went on about, was a slow-burning fuse rigged to set off the accelerants after you were expected to have gotten a good look." He grumbled and scratched the back of his head. "You, for your part, played right into their hands.. you with your piddling little kindergoth occult obsession were SO happy to believe your husband had been killed by a demon, that you went straight to me, lied about contacting the police, and whirled this whole fantasy up in your head. Let me lay it out straight for you now. Your husband was killed by professional people, FOR MONEY, and BECAUSE OF MONEY. He was a slimeball businessman who reneged on deals before they could be put on paper, and pissed off one too many people." He brought his feet down off the desk and sat up, putting on his darkened glasses as he removed his hat. "I've gotten in touch with the authorities, here's a copy of my findings for you." He pushed a folder across the desk and knocked back his shot. "Unless you've got any real business for me, we're done here."

The woman stood up, clearly about to fly into a verbal rage.

John lowered his glasses and his head snapped up, catching her gaze. He froze for a moment, giving a twitch of one cheek. "I'm already paid, lady, and unless you want me to dig up more by going in to how you set up your professor in college with that phoney harassment suit, we're DONE." He put the glasses back.

The color fell from the woman's face and she sat back down. She looked at him in shock for a few moments, then mumbled as she took the folder and hurried out.

John sighed once the door shut behind her and rubbed his eyes, before pouring another shot. "God I hate trophy wives..."
