Greetings all! My name is Ash, and I have just joined with the lovely Harper Persaud aka Persephone. She's a Medical Resident at a yet to be named teaching hospital. (I'll get around to googling them soon, I promise. I'm sure Georgetown has some associated program or something... we'll see) She is blissfully unaware that she's harboring the past life of a deity in her subconscious, and she does not want to be shown the light. She's perfectly content being a (slightly morbid) human...even if a lot of her personality is really just Persephone's leaking through. When she does come around not a lot will change for her other than being really unhappy that she's got to deal more directly with her godly peers again. ha. So if anyone wants to plot or thread or what not, let me know!

Hey, I'm Mari! I've just got the Greek Goddess of Mirth here. She's super-friendly and owns a party planning company -- I think I'm going with having it located in Penn Quarter atm? Idk.

Anyway, I can be found on AIM at candyfloss branch, as well. I'm a bit awkward though, in case uh, that isn't incredibly obvious as of yet!

Ha. I'll be honest I have no idea the layout of DC, but I shall look it up...not that Harper would have much to do with party planning. She avoids crowds when possible. Still, the greeks have to band together. I'm sure they'll hit it off when they eventually meet.

Layout tips: It's sort of half-diamond shaped with the Potomac cutting it off (the other half on the Virginia side was given back to Virginia at some point and is now no longer considered part of the District of Columbia).

It's sort of divided into quadrants with the Capitol building at the eastern end of the National Mall being the intersecting point (not the White House, which is actually about at the center of the "diamond" if it were whole).

North West (you can see on my map a bunch of streets with NW after their name) is generally considered the "better" part of town and actually where it seems a lot of the action is taking place in the game so far, hah.

North East...I don't know much about, to be honest, same with Southwest (not that there's much a southwest quadrant, with the river in the way).

South East I've always been told is not the part of town you want to end up in, if you can help it. Especially around the Navy Yard/Anacostia area.

The green splotch along the Potomac in the center of the image is where you'll find things like the National Mall, and the Smithsonian, and most of the monuments people go to see (Washington Monument, Lincoln, WWII, Vietnam, and so on). It's capped on the western end by the Lincoln Memorial and on the eastern end by the US Capitol Building. Just west of the Capitol Building is the Library of Congress and it is so cool to visit. That little bumpout in the middle on the northern side is where the White House is. The Washington Monument is pretty much directly south of the White House.

The roundish blue bit just below it, cut off from the main river, is called the Tidal Basin. Around it is where the cherry trees are. The Jefferson Memorial is on its southwestern side (and it's a LONG WALK from the Lincoln Memorial, let me tell you but there's no Metro stop near it so you either have to walk or drive and driving SUCKS in DC).

Someday, I'd like to sit down and work up a google maps overlay of all the important locations in the game, but I don't really have the patience for that right now. ;)

[1] You are beautiful.
[2] I find Wikipedia's "List of neighborhoods" lists very helpful. Here's a link! For something a little easier to read (and honestly, a little more helpful), I love Wikitravel. I don't even know my own city (town, it's teeny) intimately and since this is roleplay, reality is always subject to being changed to protect real establishments and people and the like, so I don't think anyone would complain if you say a Starbucks is where a, I don't know, pet store is.

There's also several links on the resources page to help folks for location references or an idea of what's going on in town, that sort of thing. A really great one is the Transit Authority page since it has a nice map of the metro stops and you can even be like, "how long would it take to get from one end of the Red Line to another?" and it'll tell you. (oh, and for the record, the Red Line is PACKED during rush hour.)

But yeah, I don't expect anybody to be like, perfectly accurate on where stuff is as long as you aren't saying there's a Starbucks in the base of the Washington Monument!

That's excellent. I live in a state with... not really any public transportation (buses are pretty crap) and even with a GPS, I can barely function.

...you know, I'm surprised there isn't a Starbucks there yet. :(

But yeah, I adore Wikitravel because the site already assumes you are from out of town. It makes a point of talking about festivals and activities and what you can see/do outside of the area. I definitely recommend it.

(since you like his hair, have a hairy icon)

Yeah, I'm originally from Mississippi. There's pretty much no public transportation. Heck, where I'm living in Maryland now there's not much of anything to speak of.

There's a Starbucks almost everywhere else, it's true! I like counting them since it seems like there's (almost literally) one on every corner. Hmmm... *visits Google* Okay, not quite that many but there are a lot!. And that doesn't even take into account the other coffee places. :)

I may have to add it to the resources page. Not sure why I didn't think of it before.

(LOOK AT THAT MANLY MANE OF.... MMMMHAIR alliteration!)

You guys at least have trains, right? I hear it's a bit more reliable/comfortable than busing it. I'm in Michigan and they've even closed off buses going in/out of Detroit on the weekends, last I heard. It... is not particularly awesome.

Close enough! We have three coffee places in a small town and a Tim Horton's just got built. We're about 15 minutes from a Starbucks in any direction, but soon... well.

Huzzah! I think because you've already got a lot? Having more might seem intimidating/overwhelming sometimes. Even if it's a suggested resource, you might look at it and feel you have to read it. Or... something. Sorry, just got off work and I haven't had any coffee today. I am derpier than usual.

Well, DC has the Metro system which is trains (mostly below ground but a lot of the "ends" come up above ground as you get out of the District). It also has buses.

Baltimore has its own subway system but I've never heard of anyone using it. Hah. And buses, again. Also the light rail which is a small train that runs above ground pretty much from the airport (BWI which is just south of actual-Baltimore, about halfwayish between Baltimore and DC, actually) in a sort-of-straight line to somewhere on the northern side of Baltimore. I've used it a couple times to ride in to the Camden Yards stop (where the Orioles play!) because it's the closest stop to the Inner Harbor. Annnnnd that's probably more than you really wanted to know about the Baltimore light rail.

People keep talking about how "one day" the metro system of Washington and the metro system of Baltimore will sync up but...I don't see it happening any time soon.

As far as where I actually live? I'm in west central MD and...there are a few buses here and there, but that's about it.

Tim Horton's? Are you in Canada? (that's the only place I can remember hearing they have Tim Horton's).

And that's a good point, too. I definitely don't expect people to read all of that! (in fact, they don't have to read it at all, it's just there it they want help.)
