Pt 2: The end of the age of the Vikings
Thor was among the first. When some of his worshippers turned to ransacking defenseless monasteries, regardless of the fact the Christians performed similar acts of treachery, he began first to warn his followers, and then to withdraw. He had become closer to humanity than most of the Gods would ever allow themselves, and so he refused to allow them to perform atrocities in his name. Through his devices, the beginning of the end approached, when the compact of the gods dictated most of the great pantheons would cease actively seeking worship on Earth, and many withdrew entirely.
As Thor drifted apart from his followers after becoming so close to them for a time, he sought to fill the empty place in his life. He found it in battle, warring against the enemies of the gods with a ferocity few had ever seen. He was relentless in this quest, but it never brought him the satisfaction that being a child of two worlds had, and when his deeds affected the land of his mother, serving as one of its protectors, even if it was often from afar.
When the weeks of venturing into enemy territory, followed by nights of wild revelry did not prove enough to still his thirst for adventure, he went further still, until the Giants became so afraid of the Thunder God that they sought a compact with Odin to find peace for a time. Believing them treacherous, Thor ignored it, waging his war as ever before.
Pt 3: WW II
At long last, after the ages of emptiness, Thor was recalled to the world when ancient lore was uncovered, and the Germanic peoples found ancient means to draw the attention of the Lord of Storms. Hitler called him from Asgard, and convinced him of the glory of the war and the righteousness of his cause. Long since distanced from humanity, Thor believed his persuasive speech, and turned against the Allies.
The first wedge in the alliance came when he heard of a warrior on the other side who dressed in bright red, white and blue, and battled with skill and a shield over trenches and guns, and that he would face whole units of enemy troops alone. And more to the point, he was only a mortal man. Though Steve would never know it, Seeking at first to battle this warrior, and perhaps engage the powerhouse people were calling the Sub Mariner, instead, he found himself watching the Invaders from afar, impressed by their bravery.
Eventually, Hitler's lies would be revealed to the Thunder God. Angry he had been tricked in this fashion, but especially upset that he had fallen for it largely because he'd wanted to believe in a glorious battle and the spirit of his ancient peoples returning, he turned even further from mortal men and returned to Asgard, waging his own war with a ferocity even greater than before to vent this new rage.
Pt 4: Donald Blake
Odin had, at last, had enough. Seeking to teach his son humility and the occasional need for restraint, he sought to humble him. Banishing him from Asgard for a time, he locked Thor into the identity of crippled mortal surgeon Donald Blake.
When a threat from afar was detected, and Odin's wrath was sufficiently spent, he guided Blake to vacation in Norway. Running afoul of the Stone Men, Blake was trapped in a cave. After his walking stick broke when trying to lever a cave in out of his way so he could escape the cave he hid in, he grabbed another stick instead. Still failing to free himself, he slammed the new walking stick against the stone in frustration. In that moment, Donald Blake was allowed to return to his life, carrying the memories of his time bound with the god, while Thor was freed from his long exile. Easily defeating the aliens, he re-introduced himself to the world.
While his father had sought to teach him humility and rule of law, in truth, what he'd done is reminded Thor of his purpose. That being a warrior was nothing without purpose - and purpose he had found on Earth once more. The world may have changed, and he would never again be so close to humanity as he had unwittingly been as Blake, but he remembered his admiration for the potential of humanity, and recalled, in Blake, many of the traits he had admired among the men of the ancient sailing ship.
He remembered that he had felt his greatest purpose, and true calling as a God not lording over the people of Midgard, but acting as their protector against forces they would never understand. And so he began a new crusade. Much of the world did not believe he was the real God of Thunder, but even that he did not see as an insult. He no longer demanded their worship - it was enough they welcomed him as a protector and avenger of wrongs. And so, though Odin once more invited him to return to Asgard, Thor had refused, focusing instead on fulfilling the call of one half of his soul, being the son of Gaia as well as Odin, child of two worlds, never entirely a part of either one.
