Damage Control
Vincent had been put up on thirty-six hours of enforced bed-rest after retrieving Cassandra, and losing.. part of himself. The world seemed different. He was cold. He got hungry and tired as mortals of average physicality did. It was terrifying, and humiliating, and sickening for him. His body felt incomplete.

As soon as he'd been able to get out of bed, he'd retreated to his lab. All his work on the other major project he was working on was carefully recorded, preserved, and cordoned off, and then everything else got wiped clean. Hours passed, then days, then weeks. He only stopped his calculations and testing when he needed to eat or sleep. Discarded junk food wrappers and instant food packaging overflowed his wastebasket by now The exception was checking in with Kristoff to be assured that Andrea's repairs were proceeding on schedule.

At this point it was a month later, and more than fifty percent of the laboratory walls were covered with notations. He was attempting to isolate the energy that constituted the Asgardian 'spark', and then reinfuse himself with it. He would have called Asleif for consultation, but he couldn't bear to interact with anyone while he was in this state.

He couldn't stay like this.

Without his power.

Without his identity.

Weak. Vulnerable. Unable to protect anyone.

It is strange to see Vincent so fallen, so lacking in the confidence and vitality she had come to so associate with him. But his vital signs have returned to slightly less worrying levels of stress, so Andrea will take her victories where she can get them.

"There's a lot I'm currently adjusting to." He finally speaks up again. "Feeling hot and cold, discomfort from trifling things, hunger, thirst, fatigue." He snorts. "The lack of physical power is, surprisingly, the most negligible element."

Vincent looks at her fondly. "I'm, by my own admission, not a humble person. It's very difficult for me to deal with suddenly being unextraordinary, and I especially appreciate you dealing with my lamentations over becoming that which you most desire to."

Another pause, as something occurs to him. "You know that I already think of you as human, correct?"

"It must be quite difficult for you," she agreed. "But I have great confidence in you."

She nodded. "You have made this quite clear and I am most thankful for it. And you need not apologize. I would be equally upset with an unwanted change in my own state of being."

She paused, then went on. "What do you intend to do now?"

He goes quiet for a long minute, trying to find the words to deliver something most carefully.

"Quite honestly... I was thinking of consulting with Asleif. She's the closest font of information on Asgardian magic I know, and if there's any precedent for one such as myself losing their powers, she would be the one to consult." He winces.

"Would that be alright? I know the two of you had quite possibly one of the worst first meetings I've been witness to."

Andrea frowned. The Asgardian goddess was not and would never be on her list of favorite people. But she was also likely the best person to help resolve Vincent's current situation.

"I do not like her," Andrea said, after a moment. "But I respect your friendship with her. If you believe she will be able to resolve your predicament, then I will accept that."

Vincent kisses her forehead affectionately, relieved. "You're wonderful. For being such a mature and understanding girlfriend, next time we go out, we'll go to that Thai place you like."

He looks at her, just appreciating being around her, before hugging her again. "I was very worried about you. I've never seen you that damaged before."

"I would like that."

She bowed her head. "I..." she began.

She tried again. "I do not wish for that to happen again. Small segments of my programming continue to dwell upon the possibility."

"It won't happen again. I won't let it."

Vincent strokes his fingers through her hair, keeping her close. "As soon as my powers are restored, I'm going to resume something I've been developing. I'm going to make it so you can live as fully and freely as you want."

"I've been experimenting with a way to transfer your thought algorithims into... well, simply put, into a human soul. There are various instances in the history of spellcraft, of various pantheons, of constructs being animated into true life. I'm trying to find a way to work it on your particular brand of humanity."

That's a good thing, right?

Vincent frowned as well. "That was done after you had already been lost. I intend to perfect the process while you are still whole and unharmed, avoiding the need to contract with any greater presence."

"I have always endeavored to make myself as human-like as possible," Andrea said. "But if I were truly human, I could not be a member of this team."

Vincent arches an eyebrow.

"And what about my current state? And Kristoff?"

He lets his hands rest on her waist. "I only want to do what will help you most, and only if you wish it."

"Andrea..."

His voice softens.

"It's not merely that I think of you, it's..." He tries to get past the lump in his throat.

Andrea looked at him expectantly, curiously. She calculated at least seventeen possible responses with a high probability, and a great number of other, though less probable options.

"I know we're both young and have the rest of our lives and hundreds of choices to make yet, along with plenty to still learn about one another..." He draws himself up, taking a half step back to give himself some breathing room and to read her body language.

"Is it alright if I tell you I love you?"

Vincent hugs her and nuzzles her ear. "We should go away for the weekend. Just vanish. Go somewhere we're not recognizable and spend the week continuing to repeat that we love each other, and finding ways to express that non-verbally as well."

He smiles, raising his eyebrows. "Your thoughts, Miss Denker?"

"It's settled then." He smiles as he untangles himself from her. "I still want to get some more work done, so we can go over a list of exotic locales later. I'll see you this evening, my love."

He pauses, mulling over that term of endearment. "No... I like the sentiment there, but I don't think it's particularly 'us'. Is that alright?"

"Quite so," Andrea replied. "We shall just have to keep trying."
