Morning in the City
He has Zoey up and dressed, the rest of this should be easy. Nice smile, lots of non-acting. He can do this. So when he barges into Syd's room with a huge kid grin on his face all of it is for real.

"Come on, Sydney! Up and Adam!"

He silent for a long moment, just letting the assurance filter in. "Aslief should wave her hand and fix it when we get back." He smiles thinly. "Zoey has her wrapped around her finger."

Syd smiled. "Zoey has all of us wrapped around her finger, not just Asleif. Zoey'll want everyone to sign her cast when we get out of here."

"True."

He looks at the clock. "Day is still young. I was going to take you to the Met and Zoey to the Statue of Liberty. Still up for that, or do we all head back?"

"How about we ask Zoey what she wants to do when she gets done? If she decides to go to the Statue of Liberty, I'd like to go along if that's okay? New York's more fun with company."

He leaves it at that, but something else is nagging him in the long waiting room pause.

"Something has been bothering me," he admits. "I really don't know anything about you except the glaringly obvious and we've been in the same space with all the kids for about a year. I've tried to ask, but...it's like you duck the question and I don't want to pry. It's also bothers me a little you don't ask anything about me. Not even the late night talk show stuff. I was hoping the trip would help, but now that we're here...Did I screw something up?"

"No. Of course you didn't screw something up. It's just...look, I want to ask you about yourself, but I don't know how. I don't want it to feel like a late night talk show or an interview. And if you haven't noticed, I'm not exactly the most outgoing person. Books I deal with very well, people put me a little off balance."

"Look, guys don't know if they screwed something up." He keeps smiling, but it is thin. "Clint tells me the key is 'Ask, ask, and, oh by the way, ask.'"

"I have notice, but...I'd rather have you ask. There's a disgustingly large amount of my life that's public record or on Youtube, but I'd hate to think you think you have all the answers on me...especially when I don't have any idea how you work."

"I don't have all the answers on anyone, even myself," she admitted. "Yes, I have done some research on you, but I know I have to take all the public stuff with a huge grain of salt."

Syd looked away for a moment and then back at him.

"What I do know is that you're a great guy. You're great with Zoey, with the other troublemakers and you get drunk on Asgardian mead." Syd smiled a little. "And I know you love cartoons."

Syd bowed her head and took a deep breath.

"I like you, Simon." She just surprised herself by admitting that. "And I want to get to know you better."

You know that dim hope Daniel might be right? It's gone. That sounds like "let's be friends," in a big way. Friends is better then this stupid no asking thing. Better for everyone, really. He smiles at her. "And you like red wines from Australia, get cold amazingly easily, start everyday with jogging and multi-grain toast, and you read anything in sight. And -" He looks over. "You're a champion mom - and we needed a team mom."

You also like Dewayne's movies, which means April Fools is going to be great this year. You smell incredible - and I'm going to find some peace in this crush I have.

"Better communication then?"

That feeling she had that he had no interest in her? It just got stronger. He didn't see her as anything as a team mom. She visibly slumped.

She looked away. "Yes. Better communication." She should have known better than to get her hopes up.
