Morning in the City
He has Zoey up and dressed, the rest of this should be easy. Nice smile, lots of non-acting. He can do this. So when he barges into Syd's room with a huge kid grin on his face all of it is for real.

"Come on, Sydney! Up and Adam!"

Zoey was happily ice skating and once and awhile would glance over at Mom and Simon. Daniel said something about Mom liking Simon and Simon liking Mom, but Zoey wasn't sure what he meant. Of course they liked each other. They were teammates.

Zoey continued to skate happily until a very big kid came over to her and stuck his foot out. She tripped and fell on the ice. Hard. Her arm really hurt. She started crying.

Both of them are on their feet, and both come over. He lets Syd calm her but he...doesn't know what exactly to do except stop the kid. "Get back here!"

Which means he knows he's guilty. Simon catches up and becomes a wall in front of the kid. "You know, when you're caught and an adult says stop, you might want to consider stopping."

The kid just stood there and stared up at Simon.

The kid's mother rushed over to them. "What is going on here? What are you doing to my son? He didn't do anything wrong!"

Oh this was not good. "Come on, sweetheart. Let's go help Simon," she said to Zoey and helped her up. "Then we'll go see a doctor about your arm."

Very carefully they skated over to Simon and the boy's mother.

"Might want to tell your son, ma'am, that it's not right to push little girls." Simon his keeping his arms folded, and his eyes squarely on the kid. "From the look on his face, I think he already knows that, but it won't hurt."

Syd and Zoey arrived and Syd didn't even fall once. "Simon," she said as she placed a hand on his arm. "We need to get Zoey to the doctor. I think her arm is broken."

There is a flurry of activity, paperwork and doctors over the next hour, though the older staff members seem almost preferential of Simon. Whether this is because he's an Avenger and brought in more than his share of people to the ER, or because he's something from Hollywood is hard to say.

He's gotten Syd coffee, his jacket (which is comically big on her, but very warm), and whatever else he's been asked to fetch. Zoey is currently getting plaster on her arm.

"Starting to breathe yet?" he offers weakly.

Syd came out of her reverie and looked at him. She smiled weakly. "I think so." Syd had been a bundle of nerves through the whole experience and Simon had stayed cool, calm and collected. She would have never gotten through it without him there.

She huddled in his coat and sipped the coffee he brought. The coat was warm, but it also held traces of his cologne and scent. Syd felt safe and warm, which helped calm her nerves a bit.

"Thank you. For helping with all of this and being here." Another weak smile. "It means a lot."

He exhales. "I am so sorry, Syd. I should have been out there on the ice with her." He wanted one good day to get it out of his system. This wasn't how he expected things to end up. He wouldn't dare sink into thinking he was jinxed, but the thought crossed his mind.

"Hey," she said as she reached out and took one of his hands. She gave it a small squeeze, finding it weird that she was the one giving him a little reassurance. "It's not your fault and you have nothing to be sorry about. She's a kid. Things like this happen. It's a broken arm. Nothing more. It's not like she got hurt by a horde of demons and undead or whatever else our other kids get into."

He silent for a long moment, just letting the assurance filter in. "Aslief should wave her hand and fix it when we get back." He smiles thinly. "Zoey has her wrapped around her finger."

He leaves it at that, but something else is nagging him in the long waiting room pause.

"Something has been bothering me," he admits. "I really don't know anything about you except the glaringly obvious and we've been in the same space with all the kids for about a year. I've tried to ask, but...it's like you duck the question and I don't want to pry. It's also bothers me a little you don't ask anything about me. Not even the late night talk show stuff. I was hoping the trip would help, but now that we're here...Did I screw something up?"

"No. Of course you didn't screw something up. It's just...look, I want to ask you about yourself, but I don't know how. I don't want it to feel like a late night talk show or an interview. And if you haven't noticed, I'm not exactly the most outgoing person. Books I deal with very well, people put me a little off balance."

"Look, guys don't know if they screwed something up." He keeps smiling, but it is thin. "Clint tells me the key is 'Ask, ask, and, oh by the way, ask.'"

"I have notice, but...I'd rather have you ask. There's a disgustingly large amount of my life that's public record or on Youtube, but I'd hate to think you think you have all the answers on me...especially when I don't have any idea how you work."

"I don't have all the answers on anyone, even myself," she admitted. "Yes, I have done some research on you, but I know I have to take all the public stuff with a huge grain of salt."

Syd looked away for a moment and then back at him.

"What I do know is that you're a great guy. You're great with Zoey, with the other troublemakers and you get drunk on Asgardian mead." Syd smiled a little. "And I know you love cartoons."

Syd bowed her head and took a deep breath.

"I like you, Simon." She just surprised herself by admitting that. "And I want to get to know you better."
