Alpha Flight
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

Christmas Day is a Christian holiday, it's true, but it also has become increasingly secular. It is an opportunity for love, charity, and goodwill.

There is some debate within mystical circles if there is indeed such a creature as the embodiment of Christmas Giving known as Santa Claus. But whether or not there is such a being, the spirit of giving itself is very real, be it incarnated in a fat man in a red suit or not.

Throughout this small blue planet of Earth, people have brought trees into their homes, decorated them with lights and ornaments, and placed them in locations of honor. Stockings have been placed on the chimneys. And gifts have been placed under the tree.

Some are looking forward more to the receiving than the giving. But for many, it is the act of giving which warms them, which fills them with the holiday spirit.

Each person, in their own way, becomes a part of this spirit of giving. Each person, in their own way, becomes Santa Claus.

Alpha Flight headquarters are fairly drab, but some lighting and decorations have been hung, and a tree sits in the common area. As for the team themselves...

"Lieutenant Whittaker, we weren't sure if you were coming or not. Welcome to the Christmas party, though I was hoping we'd get to meet your S.O. I got something for you both."

Mel managed to keep her feet and pheremones out of the floor when she saw him. "Hi."

She spotted the bottles in his hand and actually managed to smile a little. "My Dad always says champagne is great with this kind of cheese."

Emily - he sees - is still Emily. "Yeah, my fiancée has been teaching me about wines. Some of it even sticks,' he jokes weakly.

"Come on in and get comfortable. Plenty of food, and we can make something to take back to your fiancee. We get to meet them?" he asks. No, he doesn't know, but given his Uncle, its always been Jordan's knee jerk response to use gender neutral pronouns when talking about relationships he doesn't know specifically.
"Mel is an amazing cook."

"She really is. Especially the mac and cheese." Mason adds, still trying to will his hat to be invisible.

Mel's face will turn a deep burgundy now. "Thanks."

Emily, who is pointedly not looking at Whittaker, pulls a fondue fork out of the pot and puts cheese-covered bread in her mouth.

"Thanks, Mel!" she says around her mouth. "This is totally awesome."

He glances at Mel, knowing by now eye contact is not something she likes for more then a microsecond. "Tell me you can do poutine. I am a man of few weaknesses, but a batch with fresh fries is one of those weaknesses."

Mel, still blushing, told Emily "You're welcome."
Then, "I can do poutine okay." Dad had some opinions as to whether it qualified as food, but he'd still showed her how.

Mason looks to the lieutenant. "Lt. Whittaker, I almost forgot to ask. Did you get my present? You're the only one living off-base, so I wasn't sure if I had the address right."

"Yeah, Randy gets on my case if I open stuff before Christmas though." There's a little pause as he assesses their reactions.

If there's anything shocking about Jordan's reaction, its that there's no reaction. He doesn't miss a beat.
"Any reason he wasn't able to make it?" he asks casually.

"Maybe we'll get to see him at the New Year's party?"

It can't be said that Mel doesn't bat an eyelash; she's an easily surprised person. But blinking a little is pretty much the extent of it.

Mason's only reaction is that he seems disappointed to have one less body at the party. "Did he have to work or something?"

"Base needs a few things so he can get around,' he says simply. He's a little shocked at the reaction. At a military party there'd at least be a few cold shoulders.

Well, there's one -- but it hasn't gotten any colder, at least.

She pointedly does not look at him, and smiles at Mel while she takes another piece of cheesed-bread off her skewer and pops it in her mouth.

"This is seriously delicious, Mel. What kind of cheese did you use?"

Jordan considers. "Lieutenant, give me the specs and I'll get it done. The base was set up for my father, so if its a physical limitation issue, it should take an hour or two tops to reconfigure several parts of the base for handicap access. I'll be happy to get started right away."

"Yeah...it's an issue like that," he says. "Really Bochs. It's no trouble. I can talk to you later about it. Meantime, Randy would like to meet a few of you if you're up to it." He then adds. "Please."
