Avengers:
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.

Christmas Day is a Christian holiday, it's true, but it also has become increasingly secular. It is an opportunity for love, charity, and goodwill, even in New York City, arguably the most skeptical city in the country.

There is some debate within mystical circles if there is indeed such a creature as the embodiment of Christmas Giving known as Santa Claus. But whether or not there is such a being, the spirit of giving itself is very real, be it incarnated in a fat man in a red suit or not.

Throughout this small blue planet of Earth, people have brought trees into their homes, decorated them with lights and ornaments, and placed them in locations of honor. Stockings have been placed on the chimneys. And gifts have been placed under the tree.

Some are looking forward more to the receiving than the giving. But for many, it is the act of giving which warms them, which fills them with the holiday spirit.

Each person, in their own way, becomes a part of this spirit of giving. Each person, in their own way, becomes Santa Claus.

The Avengers mansion is decorated in lights, made all the more beautiful by the snow capping the roof and lying on the ground. As for the Avengers themselves...

Anya put her gifts to the Avengers near the tree (it had to be near since there were SO MANY under the tree already) and went to search for her wonderful boyfriend to give him his presents. A santa hat sat on her head and a smile was on her face. She loved Christmas, and New Year's (Russians exchanged gifts on New Year's) so much.

Most of the rest of the Young Avengers had received gift cards (video game or sporting goods stores for the guys depending on general preference, candy stores for the girls), but of course, there was one he had shopped personally for.

He hoped she liked it. The diamonds weren't real, sadly, the gold not much, but he hoped it would still be a hit.

"Looking for someone, gorgeous?"

She grinned and put her arms around his neck before kissing him. "You, Handsome. I have presents for you."

Steve kissed her passionately, breaking away only reluctantly.

"Oh, really? Well, it just so happens I have something for you as well."

"Yeah? Is it you in a bow and a Santa hat? I've tried to be a good girl." She waggled her eyebrows.

"That," he told her, trying to keep a straight face, "is for later."

Anya kissed him. "I like how you think, Mr. Barton. Come! Presents await!" Anya loved giving gifts to people. It meant shopping and then watching them open them.

She took his hand to lead him into the rec room.

Steve let himself be pulled along. "Anywhere you lead, I'm gonna follow."

"I'll remember that. It'll make it easier to kidnap you when I want to." They reached the rec room and Anya went about fetching her gifts for Steve from near the three. "Merry Christmas, Handsome," she said as she presented the gifts.

Steve quickly fetched his gifts for Anya. "Merry Christmas, Gorgeous," he told her. "You first."

The one contained the locket. The other contained an arrow with a heart-shaped head, inscribed with "For the One Who Shot Me Through the Heart," and the third contained a certificate entitling her to an evening of activities entirely of her choosing.

She opened the gifts and smiled when she saw them. She set them aside and kissed him. "They're perfect. Thank you."

"Not half as perfect as you," he said, once they came up for air.

"Your turn," she said as she put the necklace on. She got him a compound bow, arrows and a note for one weekend away anywhere he wanted. Preferably with her.

Steve opened his presents, growing happier with each.

"See? And this proves why. Thank-you!"

And then there is more kissing.

More kissing is nice. "You're welcome," she said when he finally let her up for air. That silly necessary breathing thing.

"Let's see what the others got us." She smiled. Then they could get on with the kissing without being interrupted.

"Well... if we have to," Steve said, with played reluctance. He went over and got all the presents marked with their names.

"Looks like our friends done all right by us."

"It does," she agreed. She noticed a rather sizeable box with her name on it. Curious, she unwrapped it and carefully opened the box.

Her hands shook and her chest tightened. The box contained a mask, not just any mask, but a Lady Mandarin mask. The box fell to the floor.

Anya could only stare at the mask. Her hands were shaking and it was hard to breathe.

The mask itself was thrown across the room, as Steve held Anya close and tight, not saying anything.

Anya buried her face into Steve's neck and held on to him. She knew the mask was a message and it had been loud and clear. He was still out there and watching. It was just a matter of time until he made his next move.

Ultimately it was her fault. She was the one who was stupid and allowed this to happen. Arguing with him wasn't going to them any good. She sighed and pulled back a little. "I need to...I need to get rid of it."
