At The Starting Line Of The Rest Of Her Life
Anya loved the relationship she had with her father. There was nothing she couldn't talk to him about and Dad would always listen to what she had to say. In a way he was like a best friend rather than a parent. He was always there when it really mattered, he talked to her instead of at or down at her, and at times he was like a partner in crime. Anya never understood exactly what her classmates were talking about when they described problems with their parents. Sure she had issues with her parents at times, mostly with her mother, but she knew she could always talk to her parents about issues.

Despite knowing she could always talk to Dad, she was nervous about this subject for some reason. It was probably because it was one of those big turning points in her life. She wasn't sure if she was ready for it or not.

Anya looked at the forms in her hand and sighed. It was time to bite the bullet and go find Dad. There was no putting this off any longer.

He worries about everything. Anya forced him to act like a grown-up and most days he's flying by the seat of his pants. "You look bothered, princess."

"I need to make a decision," she said as she waved the papers in her hands. "These are forms for on campus housing."

Wow. Intellectually, he knows he had his Masters at 16. He wanted to Anya to have a more normal life but - it's time. "Campus, off-campus, or sorority?"

She fell into the closest chair and looked at him. "I wanted to talk to you about what the options are before I make a decision."

"What are you in college to do? Have fun? Take over the world? Be somewhat normal? Meet people? Actually go to class?"

"Fun can wait. Too much effort to rule the world. I'll never be normal. I can meet people anytime. I am going there to learn." Yes, she can be a smart ass at times. "I figured there are a few options. The problem is I want to go there, nowhere else, but I also want to be an Avenger."

Yes, but that was right to the point ans succinct. "The sorority is right out. The dorms gets bizarre during finals. Go with off campus with people trying to get doctorates who have a garage. Rent a PO Box for privacy."

"So that just leaves commuting via suit," Anya said. It really didn't but Anya had to give it a shot anyways. She highly doubted either parent would go for that option.

"Try the Audi. The suit might be slower with you at the controls but the parking permit is more visible to campus security."

"It's four hours to Boston by car," she said. She wasn't serious about commuting by suit, but it would have let her continue to be an Avenger and work at the company. "I'm already down to four hours of sleep. I don't think I can get any less."

"And the choices are commute via suit, live there and try to convince my team to move with me and live with them, or live there on campus and...not. be. an. Avenger." The last was practically unthinkable.

"But that's what daddies are for," she grinned. "It's in the handbook." She's joking...mostly. "Each option has their own positives and negatives. What I would like to do, not what is necessarily best, is stay here, commute via suit. I get to go to school, remain an Avenger and be able to work at the company."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"None, but I do know a few things. One, there's a greater chance of the public at large finding out I'm the one in the suit. Two, more bad guys finding that out, but seeing how there's files out there already...." Yup, that was going to keep coming back and kicking her in the ass and probably would for a long time. "Those are the two big bad things about it."

"That has its own negatives and positives. I would be held to a higher sense of responsibility for my actions. Which could mean legal action if something goes horribly wrong, even though we are a UN sanctioned team. More publicity, which is good and bad at the same time. Bad guys knowing who I am when I'm not in the suit." She thinks for a moment. "Did I miss any of the bad things?"

"What love life? I'd have to have one first to have it be interesting. It's been awhile since I've even been out on a date." And the way that turned out was probably why she hadn't had any interest in dating. Being abducted and brainwashed was not her idea of a good date.

"Well duh. No offense, but most of the guys that go there probably haven't been out on a date, let alone know how to talk to a girl. Or know what do to with one if one showed up naked in front of him."

"Besides, I'd like someone who would make it a challenge to kick his ass."

"So we've gone over the options, which one or ones am I allowed to do?"

"Other then start in on their Advanced physiology homework? No. But remember I went to MIT." The kid knows he dad was about as far from Catholic priest as you could get.

"I wouldn't recommend Greek row for anything resembling privacy or study habits. On campus means less commute time and more study access. Off-campus increases your chance of hero time and...you know...having something remotely resembling a life. That's pretty much the bottom line."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"There are exceptions of course," she said. "Off campus, but where? I can't live in Boston on my own and you, Mom and James would have to move there too. I am only 16 and I'd starve on my own. I think the best thing for me, as far as I can see right now, is to stay here and commute via suit. If my grades slip because of the distractions and the heroing, then I have to move there and live on campus."

"I don't think you'd starve, but I won't argue with you staying here." And being something of a normal teenager. He was just thrown into MIT at 15 and that didn't help him in a lot of ways. "I'd be glad for it - but I do agree about the grades."

He clicks on some saved Craig's List ads. "And - oh look - discreet off campus garages for rent."

"I'd live on takeout, but that gets old very quickly. It's a deal on the grades. Anything below a B and I have to stay there."

She smiled. "I'll take a trip up this weekend to find a suitable one."

"I ever tell you how awesome it is to have you as a dad? I can actually talk to you about things that most parents wouldn't even think about discussing with their kids and I don't get lectures. Often."

"You cook once and awhile. Mom does too, which admittedly, she's getting better. Not to mention there is Jarvis' cooking once and awhile."

"I do, but there are some I have to learn on my own."

"Now that the housing issue is taken care of, what do we do about the summer? I would like to work full time when I'm not out kicking butt."

"I only took up cooking when I was trying that dinner at the table thing." Which didn't work out too badly, all things considered. He wishes he could make most of the things Anya's grandmother could manage blindfolded.

"Pepper can and will put you to work. think of it as a way to outfit your garage."

[info]anyastark

"Who knows. Maybe this whole domestic thing will turn Mom into a decent cook and we can have those nightly family dinners." She grinned. Miracles did happen once and awhile, right?

"Don't work and go for MIT. You probably could - but college is also to live a little and make some mistakes. You'll have enough to do, and when you don't have enough...go learn to be Anya Stark."

[info]anyastark
2009-05-19 08:34 am UTC (link)
She rolled her eyes. "I want to work. I need to work. I'd go crazy if I didn't." She was like both of her parents. "I'll have time to be myself later. I need to focus on school and the company now." She had to live up to the Stark name and make her old man proud.

"You didn't answer my question. Anything interesting going on?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]stark_inc
2009-05-19 08:41 am UTC (link)
He shakes his head. "No. That's the point. You really don't have a lot of time to figure yourself out in life before someone tries to make you their version. You're far too stubborn for that, but becoming a successful adult is actually much more work then it looks - especially when you are in that suit." Anya can tell he's not bending on this one, and he has reasons. "Oh, and you should top my Senior year practical joke."

"Here? No. MIT? Finals just got done. If you want to see practical joke season we can do one of those hokey tours they like giving."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"Are you trying to tell me I can't work this summer?" That was worse than not being able to be an Avenger. "I came by my workaholic ways honestly. I inherited them from both of my parents."

Now she was going to have to look up what the practical joke was when he was a senior. "Of course. Have to be better than the old man." She grinned.

"I meant at the company. I've been focusing on finals and end of year stuff. I haven't been into the office in over a week."

"I'd like that. A few days in Boston just the two of us would be nice. Think we should invite Mom?"

"No, you can work in Summer. In Fall - not just no HELL NO."

Yes, he will make her look it up. Since he never got caught she'll have more fun ferreting out his style. As for the company. "It's been surprisingly manageable lately."

"Oh, what the hell? Your mother could use some fun."

"Not even part-time like I'm doing now? Weekends?" Oh there was a pout.

"That's almost disappointing to hear. There's usually something interesting going on. Nothing at all?"

"Mom's idea of fun is shooting people and I don't think we need to be doing that while we're in Boston. Though I'm sure she would like some shopping on Newbury Street."

"Nope, you have to go play poker, actually play games on the StarkStation rather then just take it apart and add more features -" Which she will anyway. "Go outside and watch dumb movies with your Uncle Simon in them on TV." How many people have these discussions with their kids? "I'll count practice repelling off the dorm roof and with nerf weapons as 'recreation.'"

"Calm before the storm. The militaries of the free world are 'reconsidering' their collective budgets. We're moving a lot of those folks to healthcare, so that means moving a building - or 2...or a half-dozen. Quarterly reports were in - thank you for the preliminaries. And you know...the comp sci department just isn't dreaming up projects like it used to -" Because Anya is a slave driver down there.

"Hey, it's practical joke season." He says sagely. "She might learn something."

"You're such a cruel man," she grumbled. What was wrong with working part-time and on the weekends?

"I'm sure they'll get around to wasting time once I go to school." Now? They actually got things done. "What are the yearly numbers looking like?" It was almost the end of the fiscal year.

"Like what a sense of humor is?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Because your old man loves you and wants you to be a more sane and grounded person then he is. Work is also play until it's work. No sense in her being in her 40's neck deep in paperwork and wondering "what if?"

"Better then expected. No lay offs but no raises and the FTC appreciates the fact that we're not hiding assets like - oh - Hammer's company. Sometimes being one of the good guys pays off." Not that his hero work ever encountered anything he quietly turned over to people that could make Justin's life miserable. Of course not...

"I'm not looking for miracles. More like - how to do all that stuff on Mythbusters on less then $200."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"I can't believe you're not going to let me work. You started this you know? You're the one who made me start learning to run the company."

"Good. The stock hasn't tanked like a lot of others, which is always a good thing."

"Miracles happen." Right? Her mother could one day get a sense of humor. It could happen. "Want me to make arrangements or do you want Pepper to do it?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]stark_inc

"Nope. Not tanking. It makes it a really good buy for those who can afford it, which means larger dividends for them later, of course. I'm actually surprised how steady it is."

"Let's talk to your Mom first."
