I Could Have Danced All Night
The grand ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel on 57 East 57th street was festively decorated for the holidays. A series of lit candles on every table gave off warm light and the dulcet tones of a jazz ensemble filled the room.

People, the upper elite of New York society, Hollywood celebrities, musicians, politicians and New York’s own superheroes moved around the room. People sat at tables and talked, while some moved gracefully around the large dance floor.

Tables loaded with unwrapped and unopened toys lined one wall and at one end stood a very large decorated Christmas tree. Wrapped presents sat under the tree, but they were just empty boxes wrapped for decoration. Mistletoe hung from the ceiling near the tree and people stopped to kiss.

The air was light and the mood happy and festive.

Anya giggled. "Your highness," she said with a curtsy. "May I have this dance?"

He set the cup down and held out a hand. "I thought you'd never ask, Brat."

She put her hand in his. "Yeah yeah. I've been making the rounds."

He guided her into the first turn and grinned at her. As they were the same height, her heels gave her a slight advantage, but nothing that interfered with their dance. They'd learned together and from the same teacher, so long ago that Anya used to stand on his feet to reach his shoulders.

"It's a nice party," he commented. "Lots of people, lots of pictures. By the way, the morning rumor of my marriage will be completely false."

"It is," she agreed. "Too bad unwanted company had to show up," Anya said as she glanced over at her aunt. She chuckled. "Do I get to plan the wedding?"

He followed her gaze. "She hasn't said a word to me yet. I should thank my lucky stars I'm not important enough to bother with, eh?"

"No, there's not going to be a wedding, but Lyta and I couldn't help but give the impression that Worthington in connection with a Romanov heir might be giving Stark Inc some heartburn, or even a takeover attempt. You could plan a honeymoon, though. I'm sure we'll need a place to hide once her dad reads the morning papers. I don't know what'll hurt more - me as a prospective son-in-law, or the crazy idea that we might actually try to give Ms. Donovan a hard time and screw up Stark Inc for a half second."

"Darn. There you go ruining all my fun. Planning a wedding could have been fun." Anya grinned. "She hasn't talked to me either. Though Dad did talk to her. I'm surprised there weren't any explosions."

He guided her in another direction. Ms. Donovan didn't need to get an inkling she was the topic of conversation. "Your dad has had decades of practice in the boardroom, plus those Avengers. That's probably a public relation bootcamp. I'm surprised she didn't get huffy over the two of them here and the press wanting sound-bytes."

"Mom and Dad didn't stay long," Anya said. She saw them on the dance floor and promptly leave. "I don't think he wanted to let Mom anywhere near her. She'd make Aunt Maggie disappear." Anya smiled. "That wouldn't be a bad thing though."

"We could do that. Tonight after the party. Drop her in the Amazon River and see who bites first, her or the piranha."

"That sounds EXACTLY like you," she laughed. "You're supposed to talk me out of it, not encourage me."

"We can't waste time arguing. Mom, Eliza or James will beat us to it." She moved easily with him. Having the same teacher helped.

"There is something seriously up with this family when we have to worry about running into each other while committing acts of violence," he said. He nodded to a passing couple he thought he recognized from the papers.

He grinned back, though it was not so much a laughing matter than it was a way of life. "We are and we do, and we don't forget it. So what's the story about last year? Mom said she hoped there wouldn't be an incident like last year's ball."

"That is never being mentioned again," Anya said. "Let's just said we had some lamer than Stilt-Man villains show up."

"Bad guys make bad alibis if you pay them." He executed a tricky sequence, confident she would follow him perfectly.

"I know," she said and easily kept up. Years and years of dance classes paying off. What was harder was doing ballet in an Iron Man suit.
