I Could Have Danced All Night
The grand ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel on 57 East 57th street was festively decorated for the holidays. A series of lit candles on every table gave off warm light and the dulcet tones of a jazz ensemble filled the room.

People, the upper elite of New York society, Hollywood celebrities, musicians, politicians and New York’s own superheroes moved around the room. People sat at tables and talked, while some moved gracefully around the large dance floor.

Tables loaded with unwrapped and unopened toys lined one wall and at one end stood a very large decorated Christmas tree. Wrapped presents sat under the tree, but they were just empty boxes wrapped for decoration. Mistletoe hung from the ceiling near the tree and people stopped to kiss.

The air was light and the mood happy and festive.

For someone who had spent a lot of her life at fancy parties Emily Banner had yet to get the hang of them. Like her father Emmy shied from large crowds, uncomfortable with having to make small talk with relative strangers (especially when many of them had a belittling opinion of her to start with).

She's gotten in the habit, since childhood, of bringing a book to a big event, and tonight was so different. She's settled down in a corner near the Christmas tree with a cup of tea and a book of Hungarian poetry to wile away the evening with, alternating between being engrossed in the book and people watching, eyes trailing after the new friends she'd made in the time since her arrival to this alternate world.

Thinking about them or thinking about her book kept her from thinking about home...

Kristoff's own natural dislike of strangers lead to his making himself relatively scarce whenever Cassie was engrossed in a conversation in which he wasn't particualrly expected or inclined to participate. Obviously, he kept his wife in sight if at all possible, but snuck off with a glass of the cider to the area of the tree.

He was standing a little too close -- by his own standoffish standards -- to a woman nearby, but before he moved, he noticed what she was reading. He didn't tend to see many people who knew any Hungarian anymore.

"A good choice," he says in the language in question.

Emily looked up, surprised to hear anything but English, and smiled shyly at the man standing next to her.

"It's not bad, I've read better. That might be me missing the finer points of the language though."

Her conjugation is a little off, though the pronounciation is spot on. Obviously not her first language but one she's familiar enough with.

Kristoff nods slightly, smiling. "Just as my opinion may be influenced by sentiment." The accent's Latverian, stronger than on his English, though Emmy couldn't really know the latter fact and wouldn't be expected to note the former, either.

Another polite nod. "Doctor Kristoff Vernard."

"Emily Banner. Also a doctor, technically, but it's a linguistics PhD and adding that on the front can lead to a lot of assumptions when your family is famous for science."

She smiles and extends a hand. "It's nice to meet you. What brings you to the party?"

"A doctorate nevertheless. Of course, in these circles, so many of us tend to indulge a little outside our precise certification anyway. May I ask how you are related to the more prominent Dr. Banner?"

...And he can't help it. He returns to Hungarian, slowly and distinctly so as not to confuse her.
"My wife was an Avenger at one point and is close with the Starks."

'My wife,' for the record, is still one of the greatest phrases ever, and it deserves a few chances in non-English languages as well.

Emily closes her book, holding it shyly against his chest.

"Ah, I'm his daughter. But I'm not the daughter of the Dr. Banner YOU would know." she says carefully. "Unless you've travelled between dimensions some."

"I came here on accident from another reality. I'm still trying to get home."

"Not frequently," he admits honestly. "That must be very disconcerting. I hope you have the best of luck with your return."

"Thank you." She smiles and tilts her head at him a little. "What is your accent? Latverian?"

He smiles. "Yes. Latverian. It has faded mostly from my English in all my years in America."

"I'm sensitive to the sound." Emily says shyly. "I've always meant to learn Romany, actually. It's on a long list of 'to do's."

"It is a beautiful language. My very first. I do not tend to hear it anymore, except when my brother deigns to use a few words."
