Practice Makes Perfect (Open)
Cait was practicing with her powers out on the lake. She stood on the surface of the lake and moved water all around her. Columns shot up into the air to crash back down, whips shot out and struck targets on the shore, tall waves rose from the surface only to disappear as quickly as they formed and small spheres rose from the surface before turning into ice daggers and went flying at the targets on the shore.

In her book there was no such thing as too much practice.

In Corey's book, there was no such thing as too running around barefoot with his catalog. He popped up rather suddenly from behind one of the targets, dropping his catalog momentarily to call up a wall of dirt and pebbles as he realized there was an ice dagger coming at him.

"Hey, CAIT!" Obviously, he has something terribly important to ask her.

"Corey?" Yes, she was focused on practicing that she didn't call him Dirt Boy. She started walking toward him.

Corey scooped up his catalog. "Cait, I need more money, and I found out Dad, despite all the time he spends on the computer, can't touch-type." He held his free hand in a 'let me finish' way. "Now, I realize the only way to combine the two is through blackmail, and that might not work. But I'm willing to work on both issues separately. How do I get a job, and how do you want to rearrange Dad's keyboard?"

"Do I look like a bank?" she groused as she reached the shoreline, but she did not step onto the ground. She sighed. "How much do you need?"

"You get a summer job? Now I know you're desperate for cash."

She eyed him. "I would suggest switching a few letters, not all of them. He won't catch on as fast, but I want nothing to do with this." Her mind worked like a Drake, but she was getting older and couldn't spend her life pulling pranks.

"Yes. I am. I was going for the guinea pigs," he waved his catalog. "But I've decided the sheep would be better. And it's twice as much. I need another 70 bucks."

"Minimalism, huh? Corey looked thoughtful. "Sort of a Miesian form of typo-sabotage. I'll keep it in mind. And take all the credit."

"Guinea pigs? Sheep? I really don't want to know, do I?" She shook her head. "I have it, but I want it paid back in two weeks. Understand?" Corey was her brother and despite the bickering they always did there's not much she wouldn't do for him. Though sometimes getting money back from him was difficult.

"Less is more. Besides, if they're all done, he'll catch on VERY fast. If it's only a few, it will take longer and he'll wonder what's going on for a bit."

"It's for the new sustainable agricultural cooperative in Santa Catarina." Corey's pet cause raises its not-ugly-but-you've-got-to-admit-it's-odd head again. "Not everywhere can be Nova Roma, but at least some places are working on treating their land right." Corey beamed at this point. "Cait, you're fantastic. I'll totally get it back to you." Some of it even within the two-week margin.

"Good reasoning. Definitely going to move the 'D.' And the 'X'"

Well at least it wasn't for another prank. She did admire her brother's dedication to his pet cause, but she'd never in a million years tell him that. "You better."

"As for a summer job, you may want to talk to Professor Xavier or one of the other adults. They may have some ideas and be able to help."

"Better hurry. They're going home next week. Oh and they want to have a nice family dinner before they go. You will have to take a bath, Dirt Boy."

"Yes. Good idea," Corey resolved to.

"Baths. Oh, the bitter burdens which I bear." He pressed the back of his hand to his forehead. "And remember, Cait," he added, tone still a bit melodramatic. "The waterglasses are not there for training purposes."

"Well duh," she grumbled. Despite knowing that, she had gotten a lecture about using powers in public and playing with liquids at the dinner table.

"How are you going to convince Mom and Dad to let you stay this summer?"

Most days, Jessica did not know why she bothered to go outside. She couldn't feel the sun or the breeze. And she wasn't even solar-charged. Her light matrix was, by and large, self-regenerating.

She did still like the lake, though, in spite of everything. Which was why it was quite the surprise to find it occupied and apparently being turned into impromptu water theater.

Crap. Did she know aqua-girl's name? She was bad with that. Made worse by the fact that she really hadn't bothered to get to know anyone.

"Um... pretty impressive stuff there," she tried.

"Thanks. I like to practice as much as possible." She couldn't remember this girl's name. "I'm Cait." And hopefully this girl will say her name.

One more person here who actually liked using their powers. Pretty much par for the course around here. No one else whose life had been turned as upside down as hers.

"Jessica," she volunteered.
