Flashback: It's a good news bad news sort of thing
Cassie Lang really didn't want to be here. It had been bad enough telling her dad. He hadn't yelled at her but she wished she had. His silent disappointment hurt more.

But she owed it to Kristoff to tell him in person. At the least they were friends and at most they were, well, something a lot more. Which was why she was here at the Baxter Building looking for him.

"Uh yeah it's good to see you too." There were times when Cassie was great at hiding the fact that something was bugging her. This? So not one of those times. "I uh..." She brushed her hair back even though there wasn't so much of a strand of hair in her face.

And the concern, it came on. Kristoff still stood perfect-postured and at a polite distance, but he was clearly starting to worry. "What is wrong? Has something happened?"

"It- well- it's nothing bad, no it's sort of bad. But not really bad. At least I think. I- please don't be mad."

Kristoff blinked slightly at that, then completely earnestly. "I swear that as long as it doesn't involve serious harm to Vincent -- which would be more than 'sort of' bad, so clearly not the case -- I will not be mad at you."

Cassie stared at the floor. She just couldn't look at Kristoff.

"I'm pregnant."

Kristoff froze for just a moment. "Oh." he said, softly. And he bites back something else in order to ask "Have you seen a doctor yet?"

"Yes. I mean, it's still early and I've been under a lot of stress so I might not, well I mean I might lose it but... I'm sure I am."

Kristoff was going to kill Kang. At the moment, it was an issue of fact. He was going to kill Kang because she was left in this condition. With such decisions to make. With, likely enough, a child to raise. A child with whom Kristoff would have no right to assist.

He realized he was standing there in silence, and he stepped forward and reached to touch her face. "And you have decided...?"

Even while she let Kristoff touch her she still couldn't look at him.

"I'm keeping it. This baby's all that's left of Nate. Of his life before-" She bit her lip. "Sorry. I'm..." She was trying hard not to cry. "It's just not fair."

He was going to kill Kang. There had to be points in the timestream where that would be both feasible and not disastrous. Surely there could be an opportunity. That fact that Kang wouldn't know why just made Kristoff want him dead more. Kang was the only person involved who deserved harm in general, and Kristoff certainly wanted to kill someone.

But he would have to compartmentalize that. He couldn't allow all the physical signs of cold rage when she was like this. His other hand goes softly to her shoulder. "No, it isn't," he says softly.

"Cassie," He almost never calls her that, but it feels right as his arm hooks around her more. "I -- Please look at me?"

That was something she really, really didn't want to do but it was Kristoff. And he wasn't mad at her, or at least he didn't sound mad. Besides, she wasn't hiding her tears very well anyway.

Cassie finally looked up into Kristoff's eyes. "Kris..." It should have been him. If she was going to have anyone's child it should have been his.

Kristoff really couldn't possibly agree more there, but it was hardly the sort of thing one says explicitly.

As he met her eyes, he was completely focused on her, not the anger. He'd let that out later. "Cassie, I love you. And I will help with this in any way you will let me. And the baby will be lovely, because it's yours and --" A small, awkward smile. "Well, imagine if each successive generation of Langs continues the extreme improvement in quality." His arms wrap around her a bit more. "But you need to take care of yourself. Let me help. Please."

Cassie put her arms around Kristoff and rested her head against his shoulder. She wanted to just forget everything else for the moment, even if she couldn't.

"Thank you." She said softly.

He held her. Sometime fairly soon, he would raise the issue of safety precautions once the baby was born, if Kang somehow became an issue. Sometime soon, he would pontificate about health concerns until she told him to hush. Sometime soon, he would lock himself in one of the soundproofed labs and scream his hatred of Nathaniel Richards.

But at the moment, he just held her. "You're welcome, of course."
