How Goes the War?
Wife is out shopping so she won't try to help.  The condo is free of teenagers and Tony Stark is restless.  Anya's crash was a wake-up call.  It's not that he was ignoring her legacy.  It's just that he had been convinced by his loving family that this time he should heal up from his burns rather then work himself to the brink before pulling back.

Pepper is bringing the paperwork.  They've been here before, all right, but this time, it's not about him.  It's not about safeguarding what's in the vaults, or some insane supervillian with a scheme.  No.  this time it's about family - sothing he never thought he'd give a damn about during all those other times.  This is why he's more dangerous today then he's ever been.

It was about damn time.

Pepper had been waiting for a call from Tony since the day he woke up, but none came. So she waited. And waited. And waited some more. She almost shouted for joy when she heard his voice on the line and had to restrain herself more when he asked her to come over.

It was hard to keep from plastering a big smile on her face, but Pepper had somehow made it through the hours until lunch with the usual scowl on her face. Once the Dragon Lady had left for lunch, Pepper grabbed her briefcase and headed over to the condo.

She arrived with a disgusting amount of sushi, paperwork and information. Even though she had a key to the place, she knocked on the door. Mrs. Stark was trigger happy and Pepper wasn't going to risk getting shot by just walking in the door.

"Oh good, work food." He accepts the sushi and puts it into his lap. "So, nearest I can tell, she has the subsidiaries wrapped up except for munitions division. The contractors seem to know her from when she in the defense department, though how she got everyone to know her while avoiding us was a nice tough; one that makes me think screwing us jas been an long-term, sole-focus investment."

"What have you got?"

"Why I'm doing fine, Tony. Busy as always, but fine. Thank you for asking," Pepper said as she took a seat across from him. "You're looking better."

Pepper skipped the food, she never had time to eat anyways and was used to skipping lunch, and opened her briefcase to pull out the paperwork.

"It appears almost all her connections were made through her husband, Senator Keating who sits on the Senate Armed Services committee. Which could be why we didn't see this one coming." She handed him the papers from her briefcase. "These are the latest contracts and some that are about to be signed."

"If you were dead in a ditch you would have called," he deadpans.

He looks them over. "We're going to need a bigger boat for this shark."

"Yes. She's also been holding a lot of meetings and having lunches with Senator Sloane. The one who's making noise about registration." Pepper couldn't assume that Tony kept up with the news. Especially if he's been hiding away in his lab. "I have a feeling the next few contracts will be for tech to deal with the hero community."

"Oh, that's just the kind if publicity a company tied to the Avengers in the minds of most of America needs."

"So, orders of business, more capital. Possibly industrial espionage. Any word on the bombing?"

"No one said she was a genius," Pepper said. "No word on the bombing. I thought Natasha would have been able to find information on that by now. "

"Speaking of capital," Pepper said as she pulled another few sheets out of her briefcase. "It seems like a company called Scion Holdings is buying up a lot of stock. I haven't been able to find much on them, but they could be a problem when it comes time to make a move."

"She could be. If she wanted a bold new vision of the company, this would be the way to do it. It's not sustainable for more then 15 years, but prejudice isn't logical."

"Tasha," he notes. "Has been watching me like a hawk and probably needs something to do. Probably something to shoot, too."

"Hmmm...We'll watch them, but let's not focus on them. It's likely a shell company for someone involved with her directly, or we'd actually hear something about a new venture capital group, especially in this economy."

"Can I put Maggie in front of her for a target?" Pepper asked not entirely joking. "I'm sure Natasha would be more than happy to shoot her."

"I don't know what her plans are exactly. It's not like she's going to share them with me. The only reason why I'm still there is because some members of the board aren't so easily swayed."

Pepper nodded. "I'll flag them. If they're up to something, we'll get somewhat of a warning."

"Ideas for how we're going to come up with the capital to regain controlling interest? Or are we going to start from scratch and go that route again?"

"Too obvious." Even if Tasha would. It wouldn't be worth the scandal, to say nothing of what it would do for the kids' mental health. "And it won't take care of the problem. The place is now her yard filled with her people. Outside of the family's personal holding and the Scion group sister dearest still has enough for controlling interest." He thinks about it. "Hit up Nick yet for favors? He takes them better from you."

"Do we want to make overtures to this Scion group?" Pepper asked. "Between them and us we could kick sister dearest out and then deal with them." Pepper scowled. "You always make me do the hard stuff. I'll talk to him, though it may help to have your wife make a request as well."

"Let's make sure it's not a shell for OzCorp, the Maggia or something like that first. I can't sell my soul for wealth and power anymore." He smirks. "My kids would kill me."

"And they'd make it permanent and we can't have that happening, now can we?"

"I'll keep looking into Scion and I'll talk to Fury. What I do for you...."

Now she grabbed some sushi for herself. "How are you really doing? What are the doctors saying?" Pepper knew of course, but she wanted to hear it from him.

"Is more then your pay, less then spousal abuse?"

He sobers a bit. "It would be nice to be able to stand for more then 10 minutes and to deck the physical therapist every once in awhile...Oh, wait, I'm acting as my own PT, so, yeah, already hitting myself." He shrugs. "Since when do I listen to anyone in a lab coat outside of Pym?"

"Something along those lines."

Pepper gave him A Look.

"Did you fire your physical therapist?" Of course he did. Pepper should know better by now. She shook her head.

"No," he replies sharply. Then at The Look he explains. "I have a bad reputation and specialized medical equipment within my body. Every PT in New York cried 'pre-existing condition' and left me to my own devices. Can you believe that?" He now finally notices the sushi in his lap and manages to pop a few pieces into his mouth.

Pepper knew better. She knew it was more like Tony being a stubborn ass as always and telling them what he should be doing.

"Of course and you had nothing to do with driving them away," she commented and she grabbed a piece of sushi.

Pepper checked her PDA. She'd never survive without the thing. "It's at 2,742.50 right now. Down 3 so far today."

"She's going to split the stock." Even in this economy the shares should be higher. Buffet's company is trading for over $3,000. Splitting the stock is a good idea for most companies. It waters down the price per share because you have two or more shares where one had been. The upside is that a much larger investment pool is created and the money from the sale can be immediately invested. In this case, more stock on the market in the hands of more people would involve a lot more work.

"How much time do you think we have?"

"Most likely," Pepper said as she worked on her sushi. It had been ages since she had taken time to sit down and eat lunch. Even if it was a working lunch.

"Not long. Couple months at the most."

"Try not to bother Scott in case we need plausible deniability." Despite having a criminal record, Scott's baby-face can be a major asset. "Anything else on the agenda?"

"I won't bother Scott," she said. "I don't have anything else except for you to work on healing up."

Pepper checked her watch and then stood up. "I better get back. I never take lunch breaks this long." Pepper very rarely took lunch breaks at all.

"Give Anya my love and tell her I miss having her in the office."
