Ink, Dusty Leather, and Old Trees
"Ahhh..." Vincent let out a sigh normally reserved for after a good workout, or completion of a particularly challenging bit of spellwork.

The Rare Book Division of the New York Public Library. A little island of ancient history, in a city that already pulsed with the energy of the past. He makes a lap of the room, gazing at the stacks, before he ascends the stairs to the second level. He'd make some token mention of the 'research' he was up to, to maintain protocol with the administrator, but it was a polite understanding for one of the Future Foundation's original class to come as they pleased.

Key in his possession, he opens a case, gloved hand settling on a portfolio bearing the name "John James Audubon".

Dolemeck was still getting his affairs in order, and that included returning a few books that he borrowed from the New York Public Library, as well as giving a few books one last read before moving to Seattle... completely.

Thanks to his connections with the Atlas foundation, he was allowed to get access to any rare books the library had. And right now, he wanted one more look at one that was in Old English. One he could translate and hopefully get some answers from.

An eyebrow was raised as he saw Vincent in the same area as himself.

"I did not expect to find you here." His voice was soft, quiet as they were in a library. "I thought you would be holed up in your apartment somewhere."

Vincent turns his head as he withdraws the portfolio. "Dolemeck? What are you doing here?"

His body language indicates he would put his hands on his hips if they weren't full. "I don't have an apartment right now, per se. I live in New Orleans."

"Returning some books before I return to Seattle." He spoke with a small smile on his face. "I am also looking for a book in particular to read before I go. One that could hopefully explain... something to me."

He had a pair of white glove son his own hands as he turned the key to one case and carefully took out a book that had no title on the spine. The cover had a title, but it was in a language that was now considered dead.

"What are you looking for, my friend?"

"Inspiration." He drums his fingers on the portfolio. "Original Audubon hand-colored prints. They're breathtaking."

"Those are quite stunning." He took a peek, while still being most careful with the book in his own hands. "Maybe I should get a pet bird, once more. I used to have one long ago..."

"What sort?" Vincent gestures to a table for them to sit down at.

"I had a hobbyist period when I was younger with mechanical animals. Nothing terribly advanced, just pretty automata. I was very fond of a nightingale I made."

"I had a pet falcon." He walked over to the table with Vincent. He carefully placed his own book down and began taking the utmost care when opening it. It had a terrible, musty smell, but he endured it to start reading the first page.

"My lord, Gawain, had a falcon. He could never take proper care of her, as he was too busy whoring and drinking after his duties. So, the task went to me to ensure the bird was well fed and properly trained to hunt or send messages to other Knights. As a reward of sorts, he gave me the falcon as I took such good care of it. I cared for her for almost five years before it passed away."

He raises his eyebrows as he gently moves a print of a loon. "Gawain? As in... the Sir Gawain? I knew you were from that time period, but I didn't know you were so entrenched in Camelot's folk."

"I am. I was Gawin's squire for years, and then assigned to his side as a fledgling Knight. Most of my time was spend helping him to protect the people, or dragging him out of houses of ill repute." Dolemeck shook his head. "He was "A Knight Of the Women", saving maidens, only to get "rewards" at night, or just find someone to lay with. Everything else was second, including duty. It often infuriated Lancelot, who while cruel to me, gave me pity."

"The story "The Wife of Baths" was inspired by my life. I truly hate the tale. While the Knight is un-named, he is said to be a rapist. I was never such a thing, but the trial he endures and the forced marriage to a hag all happened to me." He continued to have a small, weak smile on his face as he flipped the next page of the book he read. "I unfortunately did not have the happy ending that book did. But I am currently making my own. I love this era and the people I have met in it. While my past does hurt, I feel as though I am no longer bound by it."

Vincent bites back a comment about Lancelot and knightly conduct with the fairer sex. "When were you removed from their company?"

He can already feel the gears turning in his head as he looks over the oil prints.

"I was removed when I was accused of assaulting a maiden in a sexual manner." That made him frown and his eyes flash red for a moment.

"Gawain refused to come to my defense and instead insisted upon my guilt. The night that this "attack" happened, I had taken the Princess to see the moon and the stars over the fields. When I came back to the quarters I shared with Gawain, he was passed out in a drunken mess. I cleaned him up and got him into bed, so I was unable to commit the crime. But if it was revealed he was in such a condition or that I was with the Princess alone while under his watch got out, he would have lost his Knighthood. It was easier to lie and have me condemned than admit his own faults. I loved my lord dearly. I even had a crush on him. But his betrayal hurt more than being cut with a sword."

"When I was sent to the torture Chamber, Lancelot came by with the Princess. She begged for me to allow her to confess she was with me that eve, and I refused. I did not want her name soiled to protect my own, as she was the only friend I had left. When Lancelot saw this, he told me I was a "true Knight" for holding up my principles, and that I had his respect. It was the first time I ever heard him praise me, and the last. With Gawain and my brother Charles speaking against me, I never had a chance."

"All of this was orchestrated by Morgan La Fey in order for one her sons to become the next King. As the Princess and I were close and talks of the two of us getting married circulated through the kingdom, she did not wish to take the chance I would become King." Dolemeck casually flipped over to the next page of his book as he spoke. "She got my brother to conspire against me along with some maiden, and she knew Gawain would never come to my defense as his bad behavior would be exposed. When I refused to join her on such a plan, she cursed me. She actually turned me into a genderless demon and sent me into limbo."

"Hm. Not quite what I was referring to, but you got to my answer anyway."

Vincent gives Dolemeck an appraising glance. "You don't seem genderless... I assume your nethermancy, your shadowcraft, is a result of Le Fay's meddlings. What other changes have you retained?"

"When I was restored, I did get... my man parts back." That made him look rather embarrassed. "And I am taller than what I was in my era. But that was because the Goddess Venus wanted me to be beautiful and pleasing to both genders, once more."

"Aye, the powers I developed in Limbo followed me over. You already know of my shadowporting abilities, so I shall skip over that part. My pupils are cat like, my eyes are an unusually bright color of green, and can change from green to red when I am in a fury. My fingernails are black and will never change back to normal... plus I can make them into talons when I need to for battle."

Vincent just listens quietly, letting Dolemeck talk as much as he likes, while he continues to go through the prints. "You seem to be adjusting well to the modern age... for the most part."

His eyes are no longer on his own book, but the one Vincent is looking at. Many of the birds inside of it he had never seen before.

"Admit it, I am not THAT doing well. I am like a bloody child, and I fear it is wearing on Tyler." There was a small sigh after he said that. "I want to get something nice for him, for putting up with everything I have put him through. Unintentionally, of course. So when I return to Seattle, I will ask Miss Rita or Miss Jo if they know what he might like."

"Oh? Shall I tell her you said "Hello" the next time I see her?" There was a small smile as he looked back at the book Vincent was gazing at. He pointed to a picture of a colorful parrot. "What is that?"

"Please do. I wouldn't mind seeing her again, if she's going to be in town, or can receive guests."

He turns his attention back to the prints. "A red shining parrot. Native to Fiji."

"Auntie Namora always said the fish in the tropics were the most beautiful." He finally turned back to his book and started to translate sections once more.

"... this book is not what I was looking for in the least. It's... it's a low level spell book. Nothing about demons or returning them to human states at all! What a disappointment... though there is a spell to create food in here!"
