A parent should never bury a child...
It took a few days after the Helicarrier crashed - a few days to drag the river, check the hospitals...Nikki Coulson was MIA, presumed dead. Sammy had seen her in the lower levels a minute before impact, they'd been over the area with every scrap of tech and every ounce of man power SHIELD could scrape up looking for signs of life, and found none.

It had been a long time since Phil Coulson had been to the Helicarrier, and he didn't think it would be to try to recover his daughter's personal belongings. She had been a private woman, and the job....it had consumed her life for the last 10 years, there hadn't been anything else, Nikki had put every ounce of her time and energy into becoming a better agent - and now there was a hole in the ground with an empty coffin about to be put in it.

Stoic as usual, Phil waited in the back of the small chapel in Norfolk to greet the mourners, to robotically thank them, tell them Nikki would appreciate that they were there before the quiet service was to begin.

Dolemeck had found out about the Helicarrier incident while he was stuck in Seattle. He felt guilty he was not able to do anything to help Nikki, and that he was not there. he had fallen for the young woman who made him smile and feel more human than anyone else he had met (other than his adopted family). Their time together felt too short, and his heart was heavy as he walked up to the chapel dressed all in black. He no doubt stood out like a sore thumb, but he did not care. He came to say a final good-bye and to mourn with those who loved Nikki.

In his arms were a bunch of freshly cut white lilies. Something he wished to lay upon the empty coffin if allowed. Dolemeck's unusual green eyes looked up at Phil Coulson as he gave the man a nod before entering. He just did not know what to say to the Father of the woman he had fallen in love with.

Sammy was in attendance. It seemed like she had been moving from one funeral to another in the last two days, mostly against medical advice. She should be holding down a bed in Medical, but nothing short of a temporary coma would keep her from mourning a friend and a fellow agent, or any of the agents she'd come to know and respect.

There would be more to come in the week ahead. Too many agents were gone. More were injured, some enough to end their field careers. The colonel and the deputy director were behind her, waiting to speak with Mr. Coulson. Sammy was keenly aware that it was sheer luck she hadn't been killed. Only seconds.

When it came her turn to speak with Nikki's father, she had absolutely nothing to say. All she could do was squeeze his hand.

Despite not being an active agent, Tim attended the funerals. He had worked along side the people who had lost their lives in the crash. He also wanted to be there for Sammy. He knew this was hard and she shouldn't be out of bed.

He hovered near her and eventually paid his respects to Agent Coulson.

Josh came into the chapel, outwardly looking stoic in a suit and sunglasses. In truth this was just a facade. The only purpose of the glasses really was to hide the tears that every now and then threatened to break through. Part of him couldn't help but think he failed somehow. Had he focused too much on preserving SHIELD's archives? Did he look long enough for people. He knew Nikki could handle herself but..it didn't stop him from wondering anyway. She'd been one of his few actual friends on the Carrier. She had been the one to get him to confess to Lena about his feelings.

He felt like such a pansy when he saw Phil Coulson. Just one look at the man caused a small flare-up where Josh found himself turning away in order "wipe something from his eye".

Valini stepped in, wearing white as a gesture and watched the attendees. Coulson had walled up to handle going through the funeral. Even for months after he would keep it bound together, it was his way. Looking around, she could see he wasn't the only one. The disaster hit all of SHIELD deeply and the loss of that many meant everyone knew someone in the wreckage. This funeral was for Nikki, and for some, for something larger.

"Hello Phil," she offered with a nod. "It looks beautiful." Telling him she was sorry or that they all were here for him too would just fall flat. It would take time. She set an excerpt of the Gita about the soul next to the flowers and sat down to wait.

Too many funerals and too many tragedies recently. She'd had moments on that helicarrier where she was sure she was a dead women. But she had gotten through, which somehow made it worse that Nikki hadn't. Lena couldn't help but wonder what those last moments had been like for the agent. Was it quick, had there been any hope, did someone come too late, it was there just no chance? It felt terrible not knowing but perhaps it was better that way.

Lena arrived, shook Coulson's hand and didn't know what to say to the man. No words would be of comfort for this loss.

This...this is happening.

Steve had been away, working his ass off getting stuff together for his new position when he got the word of the Helicarrier crash. His first thought had been one of annoyance. 'I leave for ten seconds and this happens?'

Then he heard the list of agents missing. It had been small, but it contained her name. And as the names of those recovered started getting removed from that list one at a time...hers didn't. And it never did. He put in the paperwork immediately. Luckily, loss was one of the few things that SHIELD was more than flexible in getting to, so he is here. He had exchanged a curt nod with his father and now was in a corner.

He was trying not to acknowledge it. He knew it didn't make sense, but Steven Coulson was trying to make it now viewable.

Seeing it would make it too real.
