It was a dark and stormy night, a solid downpour expected the smell of the air, and the grimiest corners of the city were doing their best to live up to expectations. There'd been a string of murders that the police were baffled but tight lipped over, and one victim's family had been driven to hiring a PI to get any answers.

Valini Morse, aka the Shrink, stepped out of the taxi to walk over to both the scene and her partner, scanning the corded off area. "Huh. Reminds me of my last break-up. Clingy bastard." With a sigh, she stuck her hands in her coat's pockets and looked over Lena's shoulder. "Whatcha got so far?"

Must contain: Silly agency name, forensics, fighting evil, fashionable trenchcoats and flowy scarves, molotov cocktails, motorcycle chase and seedy bar

Lena looked over, after having been flirting with the bartender, which had got her a free drink to nurse, and shrugged. Clear enough signal for the oh so comforting 'Meh'. All she'd gotten was that yes, their victim had been at the bar that night, but then again...so had a lot of people, and there was no way the bartender noticed anything more than 'guy was here'. Even cleavage only got you so far. Looks like they'd need to question new people.

"Apparently the guys at the booth at our 7 o'clock were there and in his general vicinity that night, but that's hardly much help," she said to Val amidst the din of the bar when her partner had finally managed to extract herself from conversation with the walking ad for breathmints.

"Guys, plural, huh? Guess we don't have to flip a coin for the honor of the next round," she considered out loud and ordered another round of drinks for that specific table. "I say ply them with booze, ask questions until we get something good and if they get froggy, I have a badge in my pocket." They'd hopefully be too drunk to notice the name on said badge was too manly for her, but that was assuming they'd get so far. Picking up the fresh drinks, she put a smile on her face and sauntered on over. "Anyone sitting here, boys?"

Lena had ribbed Val enough over the name on that badge, all in good fun, though if anyone ever noticed she could back her partner up. People bought stories much more easily if your hem was a bit short. "At least it's better than that halloween badge we passed off as the real deal that one time," she smirked.

Lena followed Val's lead. The table would certainly appreciate more than one woman to oggle at, over free drinks on top of it. And it turned out true, they certainly weren't going to question their good luck, likely put it down to a crowded bar and them having extra room at the booth.

"It's frightening how dense our fellow citizens can be," she agreed with a put-upon sigh.

The two giggled their thanks and started working the boys over, pretending to be from the slightly nicer side of town and wanting to get into this scene. Asking where were good places for certain foods or just drinks, what places were dives with no redemption and being ever so grateful for the guys' two cents. It helped polish egos and turn off brains, though Val still wished Lena could make some serum to inject into them to speed up the process.

It was a tedious performance in her opinion, and she always wanted to whack herself afterwards for doing it. But hey, a job was a job. Though they'd had that serum discussion, and a lengthy discussion over the logistics of how one would inject someone discreetly in a public place. Yes, that sick of all this. At least beer helped.

But the performance worked, and egos were at full inflation. Two pretty things hanging onto their every word and asking them advice like they were the foremost specialists in town? It was hard not to let it go to your head, and the beer certainly helped. Finally, Lena thought once they got to that point. I was near the point of gagging here.

"But don't go near Bleaker, especially after midnight."

"Yeah, especially not two ladies unescorted. Creeps hang around, creeps and worse."

Hello, thank you Saints of patience and cheap beer. Ignoring the irony of these two judging other leery men, Val widened her eyes in surprise. "That bad?" she asked and looked at Lena as if to put two and two together. "Wait, didn't those horrible murders happen near there? With the knives and everything?" The one closer to Lena nodded seriously. "That guy, you don't wanna meet up with him. Crazy fucker and he keeps slipping off before they get'im too."

Finally something. Cue the wide-eyed almost damsel in distress look. "If they know he's around there, how come he hasn't been caught?" Because if they were going to be catching this creep, she sure as hell wanted to know why nobody had already done their job for them.

Their clueless informants leaned in close, looking around as if the guy'd jump them here and now for talking. "He's a freak, and not just in the murdering kind. Keeps to the shadows, hits anything in the shadows and then poof! Slips away. All the bars have their lights on stronger to keep him from coming in or involving them in his killings." Val resisted looking to the door, the lights out front did seem brighter than usual.

Lena raised an eyebrow but leaned in to listen. Oh great, someone who was enough to spook the likes of most of the street people. Just wonderful, they really had a knack for getting the short straw. She glanced at Val with a 'well...fuck' expression. "Guess everyone needs to start walking home with flashlights," she said with a worried look while still in slightly ditzy character.

"Speaking of home, your fiancee is going to wonder where we went," she scolded Lena lightly and stood up, putting some cash on the table as her tone dropped from idiot to professional. "Thank you for your help, here's the next round."

She made a line for the door, swirling the long coat on as she went through the doors. Sighing into the cold night, she waited for Lena to pop up next to her for fresh air. "So. Either has a serious fear of lights or we're looking at someone with a special attachment to the shadows and darkness to make getting around that much easier. "Explains the affinity for alleys and maybe why that last one was cut short."

Lena smiled as she took the out, more than happy to leave the guys. "Much appreciated," she added as they threw their long trench coats on with a swirl.

Damn chill, and in these clothes...yeah, very thankful for the coat. She popped the collar to shield herself a bit from the cold as she stepped outside. "It would, though not a very enviable task we've got, catching this guy." She fished through her purse as she spoke. "And nobody is allowed to poke fun at carrying a flashlight around again," she declared as she pulled a small one out of her bag. "It's practical okay?" Hey, people made fun of the flashlight, and the one on her keychain. But it was called being prepared thankyouverymuch.

She smiled at Lena's words, blowing her sigh through her nose. "No, but that's the drawback to being the outside-the-box thinkers and the go-getters; we have to go get what we found outside the box." Looking over, she lifted her eyebrow at the defensive and defiant tone about the flashlight. "I'm glad we have practicality to fight our shadow ripper. Come on, I'd like some flat, sensible shoes to go with that practical flashlight. Got a bag of change clothes in the car, for when we go from crime scene to court rooms."

"Thank you practicality. They may pull this off on TV but crimefighting in heels is just a bad idea." She was more than grateful at the change of shoes, ugh the few times they had to do things in heels. "So one flashlight, one mini one on my keys, and flats for both of us. Is that all we've got going into this?"

Val wriggled her heel into the last shoe and sighed. "Well, we know he's prefers the dark, so he might be light allergic. He prowls a certain section and doesn't seem to shift from the pattern willingly. And," she added and unlocked a small safe, handing Lena a pistol. "I talked some agents into loaning these, so don't go all Dirty Harry on the shadows, okay? I don't want the lecture from Hoskins on responsibility and bullets."

"Alright, predictable area of operation, possible weakness, and right now we're not far from his turf and it's his favourite time of day. Okay, manageable seeming so far," she said as she took the pistol. "And god no, that man knows the rule books cover to cover, far too much material for lectures. I think I'd rather watch the centrifuge fail yet again than sit through one."

"Let's not let this get hand-to-hand if we can. Though you're much much better at it than I am, I'm a good shot but the fun things I've seen you do to a man's arm alone is pretty impressive. Still, the farther we stay from crazies with a penchant for throat-slitting, the better."

"With the check from this one, we'll get either a better one or call in a tech. I'm this close to stealing one from the lab." Val stopped Lena and opened the flashlights to check the batteries. "Wait, wait, wait. I'm not doing that thing where they suddenly gut out on us during a tense moment, you know? Thank you very much."

She grinned crookedly at the praise over damaging a man's arm while they went charging into the dark, coats flaring out in their stride. "Yes well, sometimes a pretty smile and a pinched nerve works better than just a pretty smile. Just, wait until you see the knife before you start shooting."

"New lab equipment or swiping it from another lab? Now you're just talking dirty to me. Not on the job Val!" She shot an amused smile at the other woman for the battery check. "Good, let's not be some horror movie cliche."

"If I see the knife then that means I'm not likely to be a victim of it, though he has a thing for back of the head hits first. You take point I'll cover our backs?" She lowered her voice as they went.

"You're right, someone might be listening in," she popped back and smirked. Though really, if they could bring down this butcher? Val would drag the rotting corpse through every bean counter's office until there were some upgrades, asap. She nodded in exasperation and handed back the flashlight.

"Back of head first, and little bruising to the rest of the body, not much struggle expected when he takes them down. You keep checking behind you as well," she agreed and took a breath. Willing oneself to be bait was never an easy trick, but he wouldn't bite if they looked too obviously here on a mission. "Too late to call back up, huh?"

What an amusing image that made. Not that the people who's offices were being visited would find it amusing...but hell, she'd enjoy the spectacle even if they got nothing out of it.

A few experimental flicks of the flashlight, just to test how easy it was to flash on in a rush, and she continued on. "Let's be honest...we're not exactly high on the backup priority list. Which was what led to the heel in the eye incident that one time," she commented, keeping her eyes peeled and checking behind her periodically. Which frankly she didn't consider suspicious because women at night had high enough risk rates that the odd glance over the shoulder should be expected.

Of course Lena was right, maybe Val should be nicer to the cops to get on their good side. Then ,remembering the attitudes more of them gave, decided that was a dumb idea. "If this was a cartoon, I'd just start talking out loud to lure him out," she muttered after a few moments in the dark.

She was about to suggest taking another alley when something in the dark lunged out from the alley right behind them. Val swung her flashlight hard at the shape, hoping she'd hit it in the face or shoulder in exchange for losing their sight on him.

Not like being nice would do anything and not being nice? What, they'd lose the crap centrifuge?

"Thank god we're not a cartoon, too many falling objects and there's the physical comedy to consider," she muttered back, really not liking dark alleys. This was why nobody tended to venture in them willingly yet here they were...

Lena instantly flicked hers on, shining it in the direction they'd just seen something move in. Perhaps a second surprise light attack could do something. "That way!"

Who charges after things that go bump and slash in the night? Val thought as they gave chase. Crazy ladies, that's who.The shape wasn't too defined but it was big enough to keep an eye on. "Trash can," she warned and jumped over it. Picking up a chunk of broken sidewalk, she threw it at the shape to wound. It hit and the thing shuddered but kept going. Apparently it didn't like being the prey.

And apprently they were long-time members of the crazy lady club. At least they didn't have an army of cats living with them too.

Lena took the warning in stride, somewhat literally as she jumped over and tried keeping the flashlight on the figure. "I hate this 'see the knife then shoot stuff," she muttered as Val caught up after that pause to throw bits of sidewalk. She yanked what seemed to be a broom handle from a passing garbage and threw it at the thing. It hit but bounced off ineffectually, of course. But the point was more of a 'we're closing in on you and close enough to throw and hit' thing.

"Yeah well, we can't go on a shooting spree. We're the good guys," she tossed back as they ran. "'Kill it with fire' is still a valid plan if we get to that point." Yes they were throwing garbage as a serial killer with possible powers, and they accepted that this was their lives. "Police! Freeze," she tried, ignoring the small detail about badges. "If you resist we will be forced to retaliate." And that meant more than a shower of rubbish, buster. There was some streetlights ahead of them, narrowing the killer's escape path.

"Darn morals and regulations," she sighed, though she understood the reason behind them. Besides, shoot first, ask questions later wasn't how they did things. Asking questions could be done while shooting, but really if you wanted answers best to hold fire. "Let's hope we don't get to that point."

Lena nods to Val, indicating the streetlights up ahead. "Corner him there?"
