Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:joshua hoskins, sammy fury

Sunday evening (open)
Without a best friend to hang out with anymore, Sammy had taken to spending her free time away from the helicarrier at a 24 hour coffee shop near her apartment. The coffee was plentiful, the wait staff friendly enough, and she could hold down a seat at the counter as long as she liked. Her version of the colonel's Fury Files were practically updating themselves with regular attention and caffeine shots. If she kept this up, her final papers would be written months before they were due.

Good thing she hadn't gotten around to buying plants for the apartment. Between the helicarrier and the coffee shop, she wasn't home enough to remember to water them. The last thing she needed was to be a plant murderer.

"Maybe by then, if then ever happens, I won't be mad at him anymore. He's my best friend and he left at a time when I really need my best friend. If Lena's your best friend and you're hers, maybe she needs her best friend right now."

That gets Josh thinking. "Maybe it is tie I talked to Lena. I just wanted to give her some space..or hell maybe I'm just scared what she'll say."

"I guess you have to consider if you can put the other question aside in favor of keeping your friendship." Sammy shrugged. "I can tell you from the other side of this question, I'd rather have my friend back."

"..That makes a lot of sense, Sammy."

"Thanks, Josh." This was still weird, but he wasn't such a stick-up-the-ass type as he appeared at work. Nice to know.

"They have great pie here, too. The owner's aunt makes all the baked desserts."

That got a smile out of him. "Pie sounds great."

Sammy smiled back. "I suggest the blackberry. It really goes well with a dark roast. And maybe you can confirm or deny something for me."

"All right, I'm game. What am I confirming or denying?"

She tapped on the notebook under her hand. "Is any of this criminology or political science crap ever going to be useful in the grand SHIELD scheme of things? Keep in mind I've got my sights on the director's chair."

"Honestly? Yes, I think it will, but specifics are important. Back in college I took Geopolitics, because a country's geography can have a profound impact on its politics. Russia;s for instance is driven by the fact the country has no natural borders, making it very easy to invade. Well, except in winter of course. Understanding current political trends here in the US is also important considering how much American bureaucrats try to wedge their ways up Shield's collective ass."

The waitress comes by, Josh orders the pie, and she heads off. "As for criminology: Understanding why a criminal does what he or she does can be very important. Not just in how to combat them, but also whether a person is a truly irredeemable. Me personally, I contribute funds to Vil-Anon in order to help former supervillains cope with their issues and put the costumes aside."

Sammy nods. She suspected as much. "I've had a crash course in all of this since I was teething on the colonel's pistol hilt. World politics, the stupidity of elected officials, villains mindset. Access to the Avengers database helped. You haven't lived until you've experienced one of Captain America's five am workout/lectures. The man is truly a hero, he can do both at the same time."

"That is impressive," he conceded. "Avengers database..what I wouldn't give to get a peak at that."

"First of all, you become an Avenger. I was one for three years. It was a very instructive three years. That's when I did the classroom work for my degree. Then you get to peak at the database and eat Jarvis' cookies. I'm still on the reserve list."

"Always a catch. I'll have to settle for pie," he says, taking a bite. "Mm, this is good."

"The cookies are totally worth it. But turnabout is fair play. They don't have access to SHIELD databases. But cooperation is usually good between us and the rest when it's a matter of common good. Our liaisons keep us all in contact. My cousin is a liaison."

Josh nods. "Oh we definitely need to keep in contact with teams like the Avengers. It's why working with the CSA was so frustrating at times. More often than not it seemed they preferred to come up with 'If they went rogue' scenarios."

She glanced at her tablet with a brief guilty expression. She spent enough time doing that on her own, writing out elaborate notes on weaknesses and strengths of her friends, acquaintances and still unknown heroes and villains. Her Fury Files 2.0.

"I agree that if they're only concerned with rogue scenarios, it's a waste of time. But I think someone in every group has the what-if scenarios planned out."

"Now that it's been said, it's probably time for the world to explode or something. I wouldn't be opposed to sharing a few files. See if the approach I'm taking works for someone else who doesn't have my abilities."

"You'd have to ignore the second count offs. Dum Dum got me doing that as soon after I manifested." She glanced at him. What had she said now? Her tact count was down two. One more she'd be out of the game. "What? Do you work yours from a general point instead of how you'd use your abilities?"
