Time to test the work in progress
At Xavier's request, Logan called Natasha to let her know the professor was confident enough in the progress Misha had made to agree to test the young man in a controlled situation. For that, a member of Misha's family was necessary to provide the triggering event. Either Natasha or Anya would do, but Logan was certain Natasha would come herself.

Misha leaned in close, forehead to forehead just like he did as a small boy. His head twinged but he ignored it, concentrating on what he knew to be one of the few truths in his life. He might need a keeper for a while longer, but the professor's teachings were working.

"I won't ever give up on you either."

Natasha pulled him in and hugged him tightly. Tears welled up in her eyes and spilled down her cheeks. "I love you so much Mikhail. No matter what happens, I'll always love you."

"I love you too." He hugged her back just as tightly. "It's going to be okay, Mom."

"I know it will. Thing will always work out as long as we all stick together as a family."

She released him and hastily wiped her eyes. "Now, go take that shower. I'll be in the kitchen with Dad."

"Yes ma'am." He grabbed the sweat towel he'd left on the floor by the wall and opened the doors. Dad was waiting for them, leaning against the wall opposite the doors. Misha gave him a head shake. Dad standing guard was kind of funny. He already knew Mom could wipe the floor with him.

"I'm going to grab a shower and change clothes. You two can talk about me behind my back."

"Your sister's brattiness is rubbing off on you," she said with a smile. He was going to be okay. He had taken the first steps back to being himself.

"Don't tell her that. She'll think it's a compliment." With that, he left them in the corridor and went to the locker room to clean up.

"Better now?" Logan asked Natasha. She still had traces of tears on her face, but she was smiling so he took it to be a good sign.

Natasha shook her head and watched him go. "He seems a lot better," she said. "He has more to go, but he's much better than the last time I saw him."

"He's worked hard at it," Logan said. "Still has his dark times but he's workin' through them."

Natasha nodded. "I can tell he's worked hard. He's made quite a bit of improvement in a short time." She was quiet for a moment. "We all have those."

"Yeah, we do." He was silent for a moment with her. "He's motivated. How about somethin' to drnk? Tea, right?"

Her children shouldn't have dark times, but they did and she didn't like it. "I know he is. That's working to his advantage." She smiled a little. "Tea would be great. Thank you."

The kitchen was becoming the new meeting place now. Instead of meeting at various bars to talk about Misha, with beer for him and vodka for her, they were turning Xavier's kitchen into a tea room.

He put the water on and got himself a beer from the refrigerator because some thing would never change. "Stark recovering all right?"

Natasha slid into a chair. Maybe Natasha was getting older and more responsible. She hadn't touched a drop of vodka since June.

"He's..." Why did it always feel weird talking about Tony with Logan? "Coming along. He doesn't heal as fast as some. He's well enough to put the physical therapist through hell each morning."

There were some mornings where Natasha felt like she was a referee and there were other mornings where she just gave up and went shopping.

"How are you doing? How's David?"

Logan took a moment to get out a cup and a box of teabags for her before sitting down at the table. When he asked about Stark, he was genuinely interested in the man's progress. What affected Natasha would also affect his son, and Mikey was his business.

"David's good. He's havin' a few bad dreams. Weapon X didn't have time to start on him because Mikey made himself a pain in the ass so they'd concentrate on him instead. Told me later it was because he knew he could survive it."

"Yeah. Didn't have to force him into it. Told him to see Xavier an' he went. No fussin', no excuses. He's stepped up on his trainin', too. His problem comin' out of it was that he didn't have the skills to save himself or help his brother."

"A kid that doesn't balk at the idea of getting help and didn't have to be forced into it? This has to be a first."

"That's because it's a kid nobody around here raised. He doesn't think he knows better than his parents." The teakettle began whistling. He got up to turn it off and pour water into her cup. "We can have a kid who's trained an' thinkin' for himself, or one who isn't an' takes direction. Can't have both."

"Wouldn't it be nice if we could have a combination? One who is trained and can take direction?" she mused. "Thank you." She placed a teabag in her cup. "You didn't answer my question. How are you doing?"

Natasha nodded. "Always a good thing." For the most part that's how the teams operated. They each took care of their own and worked independently of each other. Unless the entire world was threatened. Then a little cooperation was called for.
