Learning to Become Heroes
Dolemeck quietly walked about the new apartment he shared with Derek. His parents advised him to move in with his cousin to a bigger place, as they feared him being alone as he battled severe depression. With his arm and hands still bandaged up, Dolemeck looked out the window of their new home. He really had no drive to go out today, much less eat. He was starting to get skinny from his lack of an appetite and Derek was calling him on it.

His green eyes looked over at Derek. He wondered if he was still mad at him for killing two goons and nearly killing another villain on their search for the swords. He decided against saying anything and just shoved his hands in his bathrobe. Just as he tried to sulk back into his bedroom, there was a loud knock at their front door.

"I'll get it", Dolemeck spoke quietly as he walked towards the door and took a peek in the peep hole. He paled, even more than he already was at who it was. Dolemeck quickly opened their front door after removing the locks, and stared up at the person who stood before him.

"Uncle Ken... what a... surprise?"

Derek paled a teensy bit.

"Yeah...we did a bit."

There was a Pointed Look at Dolemeck. This was not the right person to do that with.

Ken shook his head. "Be a shame not too, considerin' I came all the way to New York to talk about it."

"Now, I got the gist of what went on. But I wanna hear it from you two."

"We went to a museum that house a fabled blade of Charlemagne, and this woman attacked the museum trying to get to it. We stopped her, then decided to go protect the other blades." Dolemeck spoke softly once more, his head was lowered and looking away from his Uncle Ken.

"At the second museum, I saw a tabard that brought back all of my memories. It was mine, and now people were gawking at it. While I was stunned by the sudden flood of memories, that woman attacked once more. I broke a case, took a blade, and went to battle with her. Again, we thwarted her attack... but I was unwell and went home. Derek told me to get myself together and keep going, that we had to protect the last blade. So we went to Spain, I killed two men working for this woman... as back in my day, looting a house of God was punishable by death. I battled the woman, who turned out to be possessed by the sword she was using, and nearly killed her. Derek stopped me, she disappeared, we collected the blades to be put under guard by Atlas, and I was admitted to a hospital with physical and mental wounds. I now have to attend strict therapy and am no longer allowed to live on my own until further notice."

Derek hadn't spoke up. He wanted to hear Dolemecks words on it. And he's satisfied with them for the most part.

"That's pretty much it, but in the last fight I had to pull Khan privilege to get Dole to stop."

There is a whole lot of shame with that.

Ken listened without speaking, nodding occasionally, but otherwise keeping his reactions pretty schooled.

"All right," he began. "First, you stopped the theft of some pretty important--and powerful--artifacts. That's good."

There's a heavily implied "but" in that statement.

Derek knew this was coming.

"We did good in that and only in that. Dolemeck was going through a lot of crap, and instead of trying to get it sorted out and getting backup once we knew the stakes I decided to push forward. It's my fault that things ended up as pear shaped as they did."

"For fuck's sake, Derek!" His eyes flashed red as he turned to look at his cousin. "I told you it was not your fault! You did what you had to in order to stop that woman! You were right, I had no time to sit about and cry my eyes out, we had to act!"

"Okay, both of you, calm down," Ken snapped.

"You both screwed up here. And we're lucky it wasn't worse. But you're both alive, and you accomplished your mission objectives. In plenty of circles out there, that'd be seen as doing damn good."

A pause.

"We ain't most circles. But you still didn't do too bad, all things considered. Sometimes, we don't have any options but to shoot the bastards out there. Other times, we do. Knowin' which is which is step one in this gig."

"Uncle Ken, I can-wait, what?"

Derek expected a full on dressing down from Uncle Ken, but while there was an acknowledgement of a screw up it seemed...not as bad as what was expected.

"Wait, what do you mean, Uncle Ken?"

"Oh, I ain't done yellin'," Ken said. "And pretty sure Jimmy's got some yellin' to do too. But I also ain't gonna do it when Dole here's on the verge of a nervous breakdown."

He gave them a pointed look. "Long and the short: you screwed up. And when you're both capable of handling it, we're gonna discuss, in exacting detail, just how you screwed up, and in exactly what way you did.

And then we're gonna make sure you don't ever do it again."

"Yes, Sir." Dolemeck's eyes turned back to a green color, and he continued to sit in a somewhat slumped manner on the couch. "Uncle Jimmy is probably disappointed as well. I did not mean to cause all of this trouble. I just... I reverted back to my training and duties as a Knight. If Derek had not stopped me... it would have been worse. I know that is where I screwed up."

"This was big. Like crazy big. World history shattering kind of stuff And instead of trying to get help, I decided to just have me and Dolemeck. Even when it was obvious Dolemeck had problems. I just forced us to go through without help."

Derek sighs.

"I know there wasn't a lot I could have done with the other stuff, but that first call was mine and I made it wrong."

Ken nodded. "Okay, good. Knowing your limits is important. And knowin' the limits of the people under your command is even more important. Even if you sometimes have to order 'em into hell."

"You didn't," Ken agreed. "And next time, you'll know better."

"And you, Dole, you've come a long way. But the world don't work by the same rules anymore, anymore than it does for me and Jimmy and the rest."

"Aye, Sir." He nodded his head, his eyes somewhat focused on looking at the corner of the apartment. "It has just been a hard transition for me. Not that it is an excuse, but my mind had slipped back to what I had known. Enough that I was speaking my native tongue for quite sometime. In retrospect, I should have stayed behind and urged Derek to call Atlas, but my mind... Uncle Ken, it felt torn between the world I had once known, and the present. I am terribly sorry for my actions, as they upset Derek."

"You oughta talk to Jimmy or Namora or one of them sometime," Ken said. "Plenty of folks out there who ain't exactly comfortable on account of bein' stuck in the wrong era. Get your head on it a little better."

"I am currently in therapy with Doctor Samson to try and "get my head on straight", Uncle Ken. It was a request that my adoptive parents and Uncle Jimmy made of me." he sighed. "But I will talk with Aunt Namora the next time I see her."

Derek smiles at Dolemecks desire to talk with Mom. and the whole "stuck in the wrong era" thing was one of the things that he knew drew Mom and Dad together. Granted, there was no time lost person within the team his age now, but it made Derek happy that his cousin had those who he could relate to.

"Aye, Uncle Ken." Dolemeck's tone of voice went quiet again as he walked towards the window of the apartment, just staring out of it. what did he mean "If they lived long enough to reach it"? Did he know that he had a personal death wish? Whatever Ken meant, Dolemeck did not question it and continued to look out of the window, letting his mind drift.

"I-"

Derek wanted to object. He wanted to show his uncle just how much he had screwed up, and take what was coming to him.

But what was said? Not what Derek was expecting.

"-I still don't think I did well. but I won't do that again. So I suppose I'm making progress.

"Bloody hell! You did fine, Derek! I am the one who screwed up. We both learned, we will improve if there is a next time." Dolemeck's tongue slipped back into Old English. He was having issues with that, but trying his best to speak everyday, regular English. "You are making progress young Khan, more than you know. I wish I could say the same for me."

He started to sink into the shadows before them, but not fast enough, in case someone wished to stop him.
