Casual Diplomatic Dinner (for Nicolai and Vincent).
Hans Keller was a good man. His family said so. The Young Master -- the old Young Master -- had said so. His teachers had said so. Representing Latveria in New York wasn't the easiest job in the world, but he wasn't being punished for anything. So Hans did his best.
Some international relationships were more palatable than others. The Symkarians one can at least ask to dinner. So he had. And the younger Young Master as well. Hans really didn't know what to think of the boy. At least he didn't have to worry about him that much; he was apparently ...moving to New Orleans for some reason? But he was coming tonight.

And Vincent will indeed arrive, precisely five minutes ahead of schedule. He'd taken Kristoff's advice on how formal to dress for the occasion. A flawless suit, rather than any 'official' finery of Latveria. He inclines his head to Hans politely. "Keller."

Vincent's knowledge of his... coworker? Subject? No, not subject. That wasn't how things were going to be. He supposed he should think of Hans as his senior, but trying to express that verbally would bring up all manner of Latverian attitudes towards leaders and lines of ascendancy, and... ugh. He stuffs all that down into his mind like so munch worn laundry into a hamper. His knowledge of Hans was incomplete, but he trusted his brother's word on the man. He deserved courtesy, and the full measure of Vincent's responsibility (a measure he liked to think was greater than it had been in previous years).

"I hope I'm not leaving you at a loss with my relocation. Anything my station requires should still be asked of me. Distance is hardly a hindrance."

There, something friendly and professional. He can do this.

Hans nods politely in greeting, but doesn't actually address him. He's too well-trained a diplomat to start the mostly-American-raised Young Master wincing, but if the Master wants his son here, Hans certainly isn't going to call him 'Vincent' or 'Vernard' right off the bat.
"Very good to know, thank you. His Highness should be arriving shortly."

"Thank you. I'll be deferring to your experience in any matters that need to be discussed. I've met Ni-- his Highness in passing a few times, but we haven't spoken directly. Is there anything I should be briefed on?'

He shakes his head. "Just a discussion of the current world climate. Not going in with proprietary information or anything one wouldn't see in the news."

Vincent nods. "That much I can manage. I've made it a point to become more politically aware since my... appointment to the position."

There's an awkward pause.

"My brother speaks well of you."

"Gratifying," he says sincerely.

Nicolai shows up on time dressed impeccably as usual is silver. Symkaria and Latveria had strong diplomatic ties that were good to keep up. It was always a good thing to get a feel for what was going on there to see how it might effect Symkaria.

"Good evening," Nicolai says when he enters the room, "Thank you for inviting me."

"Your Highness." Vincent inclines his head and leans forward just a bit, before straightening and offering his hand. "Thank you for accepting the Embassy's invitation."

"I do not believe I've had the pleasure," Nicolai says though he had read up on him. Both of the actually. "And it is always an honor to dine at the Latverian embassy."

Vincent has done his homework as well. He gives Nicolai a slightly wry smile. "I'm glad to hear it. I haven't read enough security logs to do the actual math, but you may have spent more time in these walls than I have." He turns to Hans with the same smile. "It will be... an overdue comfort to have real Latverian food again."

"It is, of course, an honor to have you." Hans nods to Vincent. "Mushroom stew and stuffed kohlrabi, to be precise, tonight."

And they'll be shown to the table.

"Recent events in the news have, of course, been most concerning."

"It is always good to maintain good relations with your neighbors." Especially if they had dangerous potential.

"That sounds delightful." The food was rather similar with traditional Symkarian.

"They most certainly have been," Nicolai says, "I hope that they have been upgrading their security at their nuclear facilities."

"The actions of some very disturbed individuals." Vincent says grimly. "Every so often I feel humanity is taking a step forward, some zealot seems intent on proving that wrong." Vincent takes his seat, giving proper protocol to places.

"A friend and colleague of mine with a... flair for proactive security systems has actually been submitting proposals to Cape Citadel." 'Friend' might sound slightly strained a term, but it's not completely unreasoanable.

"Clearly they could use something new. Two nuclear incidents in the past six months. Quite disturbing. Has your mother expressed any views on the matter? The Master is concerned, but much occupied, and of course it is not directly our business."

"She definitely feels that the American government needs to do more work to deal with powered humans threats," Nicolai says, "Disarmament would be even more preferable but highly unlikely to ever occur. So beefing up security in places like that should be a much higher priority. We should just consider ourselves lucky that their terrorists don't attempt to get nukes from a country less capable of defending their nuclear arsenals."

"Indeed we are. The benefits to the sloppiness of megalomania." Hans says this utterly without irony or any awareness that it contrasts with his patriotism.

Vincent blinks slowly, once, but doesn't call Hans on anything. It is Not Done. Not in a situation like this, at least. He has at least been taught that much.

"A nuclear arsenal is still the most universally recognized threat a nation can keep readily on hand." Vincent says drily. "I certainly respect your mother's opinions, but I think history speaks to the American government failing in rather spectacular fashion when it does try to deal with powered humans, threats or otherwise." He shakes his head.

"Whatever our disagreements," Vincent figures he can say that much and not violate protocol too much, it's not as if his estrangement from his father was a secret "--I can at least say that my father has never tried to make policy on genetics in his--our country." He corrects himself immediately.

"Yes a nuclear arsenal is indeed a great form of deterrent," Nicolai says, "But if it can not be proper secured to ensure it can not be used against you like the two recent incidents than it might be more dangerous than it is worth. But regardless total nuclear disarmament is not likely to ever occur."

"Yes their past has not been to good in that regard but to say that they should not be prepared to do with powered threat would be foolish. Standard military tactics generally are not effective against those types of threats."

"In lighter topics... how are you lately, Your Highness?"

Hans isn't, as it happens, censoring anyone. He feels what he feels: America should either decide to be in total control of its' citizens lives or not. Instead it seems to crack down sloppily and at random, or on some classes of citizen and not others. Hans is, of course, a fan of enforced monarchy, but he's done his best to study democracy. He's not sure how a semi-enforced democratic republic is supposed to work.

But this is a much more pleasant topic. "Indeed, that particular state of affairs seems to work quite well for Symkaria." Not that Latveria can do that. Far too isolationist.

Vincent smiles and nods. "Good to hear. My brother and I have a few projects in motion at the moment that should yield beneficial results within the next year. I've also nearly completed my first doctorate, along with an additional undergraduate degree. I mean, it's in the greater humanities, but it's been a pleasant diversion amidst my real coursework..."

"Indeed it has these kinds of trouble breed a lot of good security work. Which is very good for our economy."

"What kinds of projects are these," Nicolai asks, "Or are you not allow to take about them." He might not have the scientific mind to create or would on such projects himself but looking through SSI's research and development work always had him on the looking out for cutting edge science.

"Nothing so secret. Mostly personal augmentive devices. Exoskeletons for recovery from severe trauma. Designed to be less bulky than traditional life support or combat armors." He pauses, then gives a faint grunt. "Armor is something of a family tradition, after all.

Beyond that--" He cheers up again. "A little fine-tuning of a pet project I've had on the back burner for a while. Some work with nanites designed to preserve historical structures without the need for disassembly first. Probably never going to be financially viable outside of a utopian society, but it's a regular diversion."
