Grocery Shopping (meme, Nick)
Dad had given her a quick ride back to Earth for a visit. And at her request, when she needed a Business Break from Denver, he dropped her off quite a ways away from home.
New Orleans grocery stores. So handy. One brown paper bag full of pralines, one filled with containers of pre-mixed spices. And just a quick trip to the liquor section. She's not going to buy anything from the liquor section. That would be illegal. But she's a paying customer of the store. And she's going to stand here with a notebook and a lot of staring as she sorts through the bottles of scotch and bourbon.
Jean-Louise sketches. She's checked the chemistry books enough to spot ethanol. But there's so much more to it than that.

Someone had gotten into his stocks again. Either that, or Nick had volunteered his liquor for drinking with Irina and Lyta, or Irina and Lyta, or... something. He rarely remembers. The important thing here is that he's out of whiskey again.

He moves past her, heading right for his buddy Jack. And only then notes the girl staring intently.

"Looking for something?"

And Jean-Louise tries to talk and watch molecules at the same time -- and winces as the scars flare and the headache kicks in. Overdid it. Again.

"finethanks," she mutters.

Yep, underage kid pondering the liquor.

Brings back memories.

"If you're sure."

A breath to try to clear her head of the worst of the pain. "Well, I am fine, but while you're asking, I do have a question." She didn't have Iason and his ridiculous senses here to be her market-research buddy after all. "If somebody specifically asks for Scotch, what is she asking for that she can't get from some other kind of booze? Or can one assume it's just the only kind she ever had, and that's why she specified?"

"Most of the time, when someone asks for scotch, its because they're pretty sure that means something different from cheap whiskey, even if they have no clue what it is. And actually, they're right - if its not aged at least three years, in wood barrels, its not scotch. So some people know scotch is at least up to some standard, and the rest just figured those first folks knew something."

"Well, that explains all the cis-beta-methyl-gamma-freaking-octalactone. This's going to be a pain," she mutters, sighing. Molecular powers and the Denver Public Library can provide quite an education, but maybe not the most colloquial kind, if you get a little fixated.
"Thanks, anyway. My bags in your way?"

"Nope, just stocking up, and not on scotch. What's going to be a pain? Opening your own distillery?"

"Sort of. Client wants scotch. Better in the long run if I learn how to make it. Equipment's optional, though, and I like to keep overhead down. Just going to hurt."
Jean-Louise considers to herself a moment, shrugs, holds up her notebook full of sketches of, well, things like cis-β-methyl-γ-octalactone, and, for a moment, the notebook turns bright yellow. "Ouch," Jean-Louise says illustratively, then again after it changes back.

"Ok, so... you're just going to... literally... make scotch? In which case, you're in the wrong place. You don't want to randomly pick stuff here. You want to take a distillery tour. See what the difference is early and after aging. Especially if this client is discerning enough to actually know /why/ they want scotch."

"Huh. Should've thought of that," Jean-Louise admitted, hand pressed to her temple. "And yeah, better safe than sorry on quality control. Pretty sure she doesn't need to just get drunk." Sigh. Stupid powers. Cut out overhead, made a whole career feasible and all, but the headaches were awful. Not to mention the cosmetic affects, but well, she'd live. "Thanks." She slipped her notebook into the bag of pralines. At least with those and the spices, she'd have new stuff to use and research for the Shi'ar and Skrull markets.

"Nah, people who just want to get drunk rarely get the scotch. That's what this stuff is for." he holds up his bottle. "Or, rather, this stuff is for getting drunk while still maintaining some standard... the stuff over there is for the people who just want to go under quick."

She listens. "But self-medicating doesn't have to be quite that desperate. I see."

Nick grins. "Yeah, you can find medicine you actually like taking, its true."

"...It do anything for headaches? Just out of curisoity." Not that it would be a good idea or anything, but... "I mean, I know hangovers can give you a headache, but for short-term solutions, just for future reference..."

Bad advice, probably, but honest. "Yeah, might make it worse later, but it can help for a while. Or in some cases, no help, but you care less about the headache."
