Not Creating the Universe for This...
The fruits were surprisingly Earth-like (blackberry-like, peach-like, and pear-like, respectively) for being readily available out here. Some sugar was easy to do, as she'd had a lot of practice with it. On a less synthesizing-oriented note, she'd really been working on these crusts.

And eventually, six pies are cooling on the racks of Jean-Louise's little stand in Knowhere.

Iason was able to smell those from some distance away. Across the station, really. Not many people do fruit pies here. He had to investigate... for reasons of, well, baking.

"Are those Skrullian crawlberries?"

"Yes. Presented via a blackberry pie recipe. They were close enough, I figured. Want a slice? I even got some milk. ...Also via Skrullos, but you know, it works, and I really didn't want the headache."

"I would love a slice of the pie, but will pass on the milk. Skrull cows are occasionally... very suspicious."

She cuts and serves him a slice. "All right then. But if we start avoiding Skrull anything that's suspicious, it's going to be hard to do business with them. Made the peach pies with something Shi'ar I can't pronounce. They should invest in more vowels. And these are decor-fruit from the Badoon Sisterhood."

"Shi'ar P'wth'wanni? I recognize it, yes. Their language takes some getting used to, but I prefer it to Kree. Skrulls also take a certain amount of pride in being tricky to do business with. Several friends of mine would be heartened to hear you say that."

"Gesundheit. Kree's a nuisance, but at least it doesn't get creative. And feel free to pass it on that they're pains in the neck who'd make a Renaissance Italian blush, and I don't trust any of them further than I could throw them. Y'know. If you're feeling sweet."

"I'll be sure and do that. And will see if I can get you a better price on crawlberries while I'm at it. And no, lack of creativity is definitely a Kree trait."

"Aw, thanks. And yes. Even if they were going to be, they'd probably purposely avoid it because it sounded like a Skrullish thing to do. Just like I'm sure the Skrulls wouldn't buy oatmeal, for reasons of Kree."

"Its true, or almost true. Most civilizations have something akin to oatmeal. The Skrull just usually add fruit juice or... I suppose it equates best to pepper... in theirs. Otherwise, their main equivalent without adornment is fed at times to prisoners. The equivalent of dry bread and water."

He spends several moments pondering. The problems with asking a gourmet with superhuman sense of taste how it is.

"Very good, though very balanced. This would appeal to the Kree taste, if their working classes had more dessert. On Shi'ar heavy days, you might want to find more sweet notes, given their avian background and influence on their palate, while Skrullian empire people are used to a more savory note in sweets, but consume a lot of them."

"Good to know, thank you. The Kree aren't exactly a priority in desserts, so I'll definitely work on some variants."

Jean-Louise smiles. "Glad there, at least. And you can always come by here. I need to get ahead on the food in advance of the next time I need saving."

"I know, but it seems fitting, and the insight's nice." Pause. "Also been hoping to ask you if you could maybe come along when I make another run to the Sisterhood. Don't get me wrong, totally nice ladies, they don't give me the creeps at all, but being there does. There's a pretty little swamp-nunnery that's used to perpetuate a really annoying regional galactic power. It's just screaming for something horrible to happen for political convenience."

Jean-Louise raises an eyebrow. "Is she big on ornamental gardens and libraries? Or does this have something to do with your going steady?"

[info]cosmic_son

"My mother denies my foray into 'going steady'. Her assumptions are, of course, wrong, but she likes hearing about ventures into places full of women. Even nunneries of the sisterhood."

"Ah. Well, yeah, it's terribly promising. Tons of females who don't see outsiders extremely frequently and have no interest -- or possibility -- of pursuing relationships with males of their own species. All she has to do is completely ignore how you've said you're conducting yourself for now, and you've got options like whoa."

"I'm not even certain I'd call them friends. Allies, certainly, compatible acquaintances willing to aid each other with what they wanted or needed at the time. After my birth, they frequently didn't associate much save over dealing with my upbringing."

"I'm not positive my mother has a normal. Most of her attention is reserved, continuously, for what her cosmic awareness, and her interpretations of what is best for the universe tell her. As for my father... yes. Most of his wives in times past were human."

"Didn't being widowed that much suck, even if you're used to losing people?" Pause. Blink. "Didn't mean that to sound callous, about your dad or you or anything."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]cosmic_son
2013-02-11 11:46 pm UTC (link)
"Why would it sound callous? Its the truth. Its why many Eternals separate themselves from shorter lived races, to associate with gods and other cosmic beings, while some, like Sersi and my father rather enjoy the passion of those with briefer lives. Both consider getting to witness, and somewhat encourage those passions a fair trade for the losses. Even so, my father sought to ensure I was prepared for an immortal existence."

It's good that he knows he's a walking sentient sculpture with optional breathing, so it doesn't have to get weird.
