The Battle of Olympus
The trail eventually led the Avengers, Future Foundation and the Defenders to the other dimensional realm that served as the home of the Greek gods. They traveled to a few realms that were home to other gods only to find them destroyed and in ruins. Olympus wasn't in ruins, but it was under attack. Battle raged all around and the skies thundered and were lit up by lightning bolts.

The God of the Smoking Mirror smiles, turning to regard Franklin. "Always, but nothing that concerns you or your allies at this time. Your energies are best spent elsewhere."

There was silence for a moment, and then energy started gathering around Franklin's hands. His eyes also lit up with energy.

"But it concerns us in the future, that much I'm sure of. If I'm able to stop you now, then that's what I'm going to do."

He let loose a powerful blast of psionic energy at the God.

The god is struck, reeling back. His eyes narrow. "And what did you expect to do? I will return to the council of gods after this. This fight is pointless, and you know it." he replies, the area filling with images of himself, shifting and moving about, speaking in unison. "You accomplish nothing."

When images of Tezcatlipoca started springing up, Franklin let his telepathy sort out what was real and what was not. He didn't go so far as to try and pry into the God's mind -- not the wisest course of action for any level of telepath to attempt (you just never know what Gods keep in their heads) -- but he was able to keep track of the God's actual location.

"I'd like to think you'll be held responsible for your actions," Franklin replied, choosing not to attack just yet. "Are you so sure you'll just be allowed to return without consequence?"

When the god feels the telepathic probe, not touching his mind, but searching for it, the illusion becomes more complex. Visions of death, warfare, strife, turmoil and suffering of all kinds - living hells - crop up in the surroundings, trying to create confusion enough to delay the mortal.

"Oh, there will be some punishment to be certain, but we must take the long view. Countless times, I've saved mortal lives, or come to the aid of the other skyfathers in their times of trouble. I hold favors enough to ensure it will be minor. A decade or two of close watch is a passing moment."

All of these things are triggers for Franklin. He's experienced Hell, and it was no minor scar on his mind. Though he had mostly recovered from the trauma, his body begins to shake with lingering anxiety over the ordeal. he took deep, relaxing breathes. Had he not been so lucky to have a family that cared for him when he needed it most, illusions such as these would have been too much to handle.

"Unless favors owed to others weigh more than those owed to you," Franklin stated. His voice trembled at first, but steadied by the end of his statement. He created a ring of psionic energy around himself and thrust it out to expand through the illusions and cut through them.

"Besides, not all Gods adhere to favors. I'm sure you owe Zues a favor or two, and yet here you are."

As a precautionary measure, he erected a telekinetic shield around himself and bolstered his telepathic defenses.

He can see, and feel, the shakes and shifts, and attempts to relax. He's been doing this a long, long time, and while Franklin is powerful, he's not one of the master manipulators among immortals for no reason.

The illusions are cut through, and more form in the wake. the psionic wave stirs flames, faint figures writhing in torment among them, as he begins testing more specific versions of hells for reaction.

"I've known Zeus, and all these others, for centuries upon centuries. I know their ways, what they desire, what they will honor and what they will ignore. I didn't rise to my position by chance. And I'll still be holding it when the flames aren't mere visions, but the very real things pulling you in before the gates close behind you."

It got harder for Franklin to calm his nerves. Tezcatlipoca was definitely hitting him in all the right places with these illusions. That was the strongest reason why Franklin wasn't having a full-on panic attack; because he knew the difference between illusion and reality. Still, that didn't make what he felt insignificant.

He took more deep breathes, and closed his eyes. Maintaining his barrier was key at this point, and feeling out for the God's location was important.

"And in all those centuries, nothing unexpected has ever happened?" Franklin asked.

Tezcatlipoca can see the effect he's having, obscuring the area in more smoke amidst the flames, and adding tactile components - making sure Franklin can feel the heat.

"The unexpected happens all the time - but in remarkably predictable ways. The skyfathers are set in their ways, when they don't have the schemers and tricksters to shake them up. Oh, I'll be banished from the council for a time, but nothing worth the trouble of us fighting now. Help your friends, they'll need it... we'll meet again."

Franklin grit his teeth. He was needed in other places. Some of his allies were struggling; he could feel it in their minds. And this confrontation was not going to get any easier with Tezcatlipoca picking away at the one thing that could send Franklin into a fit of anxiety.

"Yeah," Franklin said. "I'm sure we will."

There was no other choice.

No longer opposed, the God of the Smoking Mirror teleports away. He'll remember this one, oh yes.

Very interesting.
