Discussion on Life, Love, and 'you just had to be there...'
Lunch had been something, all right. Misha was glad Anya hadn't been there to see it, but he knew he wouldn't get away with not telling her about it. All their lives they'd joked about That Murdock Guy. It wasn't so funny now.

He managed to get back to his place before his phone started ringing. Thank God the ringtone wasn't 'It's Raining Men' this time. There was probably GPS locator in it so Brat would know where he was likely to be alone and she could get the scoop on things.

"Hey, how did your finals go?"

"I had to say hi to Darlene, Dork. She had a few things to say about you," Anya grinned.

He hugged her to him in one arm and planted a loud smooch on her forehead. "Lies, all lies. Hungry? I'm making lunch. There wasn't a whole lot of eating at lunch, and Mom didn't order any fries for me to snitch from her plate.

"That bad?" she asked as she nodded. "Lunch would be great. I'm famished even though I had creme brulee earlier."

"Darlene says you're neglecting her again."

"I told you, it's all lies. I drove her just last weekend out to the Institute."

He led the way to the kitchen and motioned her around to the stools at the eating bar. His sandwich in progress, a mountain of several types of cheeses and meats, was just waiting for the application of mayo, mustard, lettuce leaves and sliced tomatoes to be complete.

"Ah, your home ec final." He put the finishing touches on the food mountain and sliced it in half, putting each on a plate and sliding one to her. "Sure you don't need your stomach pumped instead?"

"That was a week ago. She thinks it's been too long."

She followed him to the kitchen and took a seat on one of the bar stools. "Yes. I passed and it was actually good." She looked at the sandwich. "Thanks." She eagerly dug into it.

"Darlene should blame Mom. If Mom hadn't given me the penthouse, I'd still be out at the Institute and commuting more. I just can't do that here."

He took a bottle of chilled vodka from the freezer and poured them each a shot. He used the shot glasses with the Romanov coat of arms just for fun.

"Mom would just love that." Anya grinned. "Give Darlene Mom's number. I dare you." She grinned mischievously.

"So lunch. Give me the scuttlebutt. What happened?"

He downed the shot first. Yeah, vodka was the one liquor that could get him drunk and keep him there for a little while. It was unexplainable, and an alert to those who knew him that well if something was disturbing him.

This situation was just odd. "Eliza took it better than Murdock or Jack. I mean, we always knew Mom dated Murdock for a long time and that she loved him. Loves him. I don't think Jack knew his dad had a life before his mom. Mom and Murdock danced around the niceties and you could tell they were both off balanced a little by the other."

Anya knew, but she understood why he needed to drink right now. She grabbed a glass for herself and downed it.

"A part of Mom will always love Murdock." Anya shrugged. "It's one of those things. "Poor Jack. It's understandable with Elektra for a mother why he doesn't know about Mom and Murdock, but it had to be hard watching them."

She sighed. "I'm sorry I missed it."

He shook his head and refilled their glasses. "It's one thing to know your mother has a past. It's another thing to watch her look that way at a man that's not her husband. She never looked at my dad like that, and she says she loves him. She married yours, and I've never seen her look at him like that. There's unfinished business between Mom and Murdock."

He turned his attention to his lunch. If he didn't get some food in him with the vodka, he would be drunk later and he had a date. "They're going to meet later and discuss Eliza's options. As well as she took it, you'd never guess this was her first dimensional accident. She's planning to research schools on both coasts to finish high school and then see about colleges."

"See, it's possible to love a lot of people over the course of your life," she explained, "but I think people have only one great love in their lives. The lucky people find that one great love and the really lucky ones are the people who end up with that person. I've always suspected that Murdock's was Mom's one great love, but Fate had other ideas and they're not together." Anya shrugged and downed the second shot. "Mom does love Logan and my dad, there's no doubt about it, just in different ways than she loves Matt."

Anya shrugged. "We're a pretty resilient bunch. I'd like to think we could handle anything thrown at us."

Anya had always been the more pragmatic of them. Trust her to find a way to express it. He smiled at her and poured her a third shot. "You're probably right. I'm going to avoid that whole great love thing because it looks a lot more miserable than it sounds."

"You think Eliza's taking this all a little too well?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"I don't think it's something you can avoid. I think it just happens." There had been plenty examples of it around her when she was growing up. Uncle Steve and Aunt Sharon. Uncle Hank and Aunt Jan. Even Scott and Jean.

"No. I think she's hiding her issues well. It is a family trait after all."

"Mom invited Jack to come by the Avengers any time. You should've seen her not wince when he called her Mrs. Stark. He's seems okay. Just way out of the hero loop."

He took a bite of his sandwich and silence filled the kitchen as they finished their sandwiches. He got a bag of chips from the cupboard and opened it between them. He poured himself one more shot of vodka, then pushed the bottle in Anya's direction.

"Maybe what we could do is invite them all over for an evening just to get to know each other."

Anya chuckled. "Funny thing is she didn't want to be known as Mrs. Stark and people are calling her that anyway." Oh yes, she was amused.

Deadpan. "You want to invite Jack and Murdock over for dinner one night?" One of our family dinners?" Anya quickly downed a shot of vodka.

"If she doesn't want to be known as Mrs. Stark, she shouldn't have married a Mr. Stark." Misha was amused himself. The woman would probably have a breakdown when the first grandkid arrived and people started referring to her as Grandma.

"I was thinking of something a little more informal, but that sounds good too. Let's invite Jack and his dad to dinner with you and your dad, and me and my dad, and Mom and James and Eliza!" He rolled his eyes at her. "Brat. Jack, Eliza, you, me, James, here. Dinner one night soon. Take out so no one has to be nice about anybody else's cooking. We can talk. Watch movies. Make fun of our parents. The usual kid party stuff."

She breathed a sigh of relief. "That sounds good actually. Probably safest way to do it."

A pause.

"You should invite David too. He's family."

He nodded. "And David. I mean, let's face it. No matter what the parents decide, we'll be the ones living with it. We might as well be proactive about it. Who knows? Between the six of us, we might just have a workable team."
