Open scene at x-mansion
Having helped with the car washing for a while, a slightly troubled Lucas has moved off to sit in the grass, discarding his sirt and jacket - easier to meditate that way. He chants softly, almost inaudibly, pausing every now and then to look about, or cock his head as if listening to someone or something.

Summer hadn't so much 'helped' with the car washing as she had 'gotten in the way'. Try as she may, she also hadn't 'made a friend' so much as 'made a nuisance of herself'. The early part of the afternoon was definitely a bust. Although, to be fair, Danielle hadn't eaten her. That had to count for something.

The grass still felt good under her feet and she let herself wander. The grounds really were awesome. She'd have to look for Corey or Joe later. They were nice to hang around. Speaking of hanging around... she paused to watch the shirtless guy's odd antics. He looked kind of twitchy. Did she dare approach another twitchy guy today?

No... she'd stop where she was and wait to see if he noticed her or chose to ignore her.

He glances up from whatever he's doing, and looks her way. After a moment of study, he smiles. "Just visiting, or are you new here?"

"New," she answered and ventured a little closer. Space between. No eye contact. The last part was the hard part to remember. Her show-biz training taught her to always look them in the eye. "Just arrived a few days ago. I'm Summer."

He rolls up to his feet and closes the gap, extending a hand. "Pleasure to meet you then, Summer. I'm Lucas. Welcome to Xavier's."

Well, hell. There went that plan. She smiled automatically and shook his hand. "Nice to meet you. I feel a little weird being a new student at my age, but I keep telling myself it's like going to college."

"They certainly don't offer some of the local courses in high school, so that should be pretty easy to do. A lot of the early students were taken in as young adults, for that matter."

"Beats schilling card tricks, I guess." Well, not really. She kind of missed it. Audiences were always fun. Just not the traveling and someone always telling her what to do. "Are you a student here?"

His eyes light up. "Card tricks, really? Neat. We went to a couple carnivals in Colorado that had some stage magic. I spent a lot of hours when I was ten trying to figure out how they did some of the sleight of hand and card tricks... just had no knack for stage magic."

He pauses, noting the question. "Oh, yes. Second generation. My mother was one of the New Mutants. I've only been here a couple months myself though."

"Yeah, I was in a magic show for the last five years or so. I'm pretty good with slight of hand. Some of my tricks really are illusions, though." She held up a hand and a second later a small, white, wiggly rabbit was dangling by its scruff. Then she cradled it in her arms. They always felt real enough to her.

"I have a lot to learn about mutants. I really did think I belonged in a circus until recently."

"I'm guessing you were the beutiful assistant? I always heard that it was usually the assistant with the real talent." he replies. "So you're an illusionist? That's interesting. As for me... kind of the same boat. I'm honestly a lot more familiar with magic than with mutants."

"I was the assistant for a while. Then I stepped up to do my own show. The guy I worked for wasn't really very good. He was a better manager. At first, anyway." She pet the bunny for a while longer before putting it down on the ground. It hopped away, fading as it got further from her until it disappeared.

"I don't know anything about real magic. Just the card tricks and top hats kind."

He nods. "Stage magic is a lot more interesting than real magic sometimes."

He watches the rabbit thoughtfully. "That's really impressive, amazing level of detail."

"The ones that I practice a lot are. New illusions aren't always so good. It takes me a while to get the hang of them." She shrugged and smiled. "I guess that's why I'm here, though."

She was not going to bring up the Brain Issue again. Oh no.

Ah, a pep talk. Just what she needed. The fish out of water feeling was new and pretty uncomfortable. It was nice to hear that someone thought she was starting off okay. Even if he was a stranger.

"Unfortunately, it wasn't a sustainable living. As much as I loved it, I knew the magic show couldn't last forever. I figured it was time to get out while I still had a chance of doing something useful with myself." She grinned and shrugged. "Just don't know what that is, yet."

"I think I will. I've already discovered this glorious new thing called 'unpacking', which I have never done before. It's really quite fascinating. Things get put in a place and they stay there." She grinned, obviously joking, but there was also some truth to her amazement. It was nice to be able to have a space to call her own that wasn't already claimed for someone else a week down the road.

"You want any help with that, or getting things set up or moved around? My unpacking took maybe ten minutes, mostly moving everything extra out of the room. But I've heard some horror stories about trying to make room for everything in the dorm rooms."

"The biggest problem I had was fitting my trunk in. I left most of my magic stuff with my ex-manager, but there were a few things I couldn't part with." She shrugged. "I just use it as furniture. It's sitting under the window for more seat space."

"I'm used to living in hotel rooms. This isn't a whole lot different. Just no mini bar."

"I can understand that. I never really had much beyond what would fit in one of those climber's packs. Not a lot of point. I'm still almost never in my room, so didn't see much need for the seating."
