All Hallow's Eve
All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

"You bet," she grinned. "Okay. I can help. It's not ice, but I think I can manage."

"I'm sure your ice swords are more precise than these kitchen knives I've got here," he chuckles. But the pumpkin he's working on definitely looks good and more detailed than most people did jack o lanterns.

"I just do better with ice than pumpkins. Go figure." Cait turned the ice sword into an ice knife and started carving a pumpkin.

"Not going to do a spooky ice sculpture? Could go well with the pirate pumpkins. And then you'd get to say 'Release the Kraken!'," he grinned.

"I can make an ice kraken if you want," she said.

"Up to you. You do great ice sculptures is why," he smiles.

Cait blushed a bit. "Thank you." Cait reached out with her powers and pulled some water out of Blackstone Lake.

"I speak nothing but the truth," he smiled, thinking she looked awfully cute when she blushed. With a stab of his knife he managed to yank the pumpkin's eye out. "I'm ruining the poor guy's depth perception here."

"I don't think he'll need it," she said as she continued to shape the ice sculpture.

"Probably better he doesn't see what you have in store for him."

The kraken formed and Cait put the final touches on him. It looked like the kraken from the old Clash of the Titans movie, not the recent remake.

At about the same time the first pumpkin is finished and looks suitably piratey for the occasion. "Ooh, nice. I don't think Pumpkin Pirate stands much of a chance."

"Thank you," she said and made the kraken wave his tentacles menacingly.

Vlad laughs and claps for the show. "Extra points for the moving ice sculpture. The released Kraken will have a ship of pumpkins trying and failing to defeat him."

He brandished his plastic sword at the moving Kraken. "Hey, someone has to have some fun around here. Other people fill the doom and gloom too well. Join the silly side. I know a cute girl who makes great cookies. She might share."

"Have at you Kraken!" From his position sitting on the floor, Vlad parries the Kraken's swing with his sword. "So I won't need to tempt you to the silly side then, my work is already done!"

Cait laughed more and kept the kraken moving. Though it was getting hard to concentrate with laughing so much.

He stabs the ice kraken with his plastic sword which does nothing but bend on impact. "Direct hit and nothing? This calls for drastic measures." He takes the finished pirate pumpkin and impales it on one of the tentacles. The carved in face looks suitably unhappy at this turn of events. "There, now that the kraken has his first victim he'll be suitably feared."

The kraken stopped moving and held up the tentacle that had the impaled pumpkin on it.

"Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy," Cait said as the kraken seemed to lament the death of the pumpkin.

Vlad rolls back laughing at Hamlet kraken. He manages to stop laughing long enough to get words out finally. "Cry 'Havoc', and let slip the dogs of war, that this foul deed shall smell above the earth," he says, shaking a fist dramatically and this outrage that was the death of a poor pumpkin.
