Marlow Appreciation Day! (Open)
There was not enough Marlow Appreciation. This needed to be fixed.

Other people had birthdays and such where you could get them all sorts of presents and show how much you liked and appreciated them but Marlow didn't have a birthday. It wasn't fair that people didn't have that day to show her how awesome she was. So Martin usually picked a random day each year to get her a present (though sometimes he forgot if he'd brought one that year and she ended up getting more than one). This year though he was determined she'd get a whole Appreciation Day.

Arriving on the grounds of the Defender's compound, Martin is positive he has the right location. Usually with teleporting there was always a little doubt but the place had her magic all over it. So with his usual blue flames he'd arrived right outside where he could sense her magical protection spells.

Of course it was still within the scope of the non-magical security.

Yep, right place. Those blaring alarms couldn't be wrong. It worked so much better than a doorbell too.

Martin stands casually in the pink bubble and waves cheerfully as if nothing was amiss here. "MARLOW! I came to visit! Guess what day it is?" He supposed he could have put up his own blue bubble around himself, but it was Marlow and he wasn't worried about anything with her.

"It's National Checkers Day!" Marlow called back over the six feet and pink bubble that separated them. "Wait a second, I'll get the alarms off!"

She disappeared. The bubble stayed. A minute later the alarms were off and the staff had all gone back to work.

"Did you want to play checkers?" she asked as she sent the bubble away to give him a big hug.

He waited patiently, hands behind his back and hummed to himself until she came back. "Okay! It's fun making them jump and do mid-air battles," he smiled.

The general rule with Martin was that he was not to be touched. He kept a strict minimum distance between himself and others at all times and (except on extreme occasions) never hugged.

But Marlow was the exception that made the rule. She was family and magical. That meant frog Marlows were far far less likely to happen by accident. So instead of the terrified freezing up and 'I hope I don't turn them into a frog' look on his face, he simply stuffs his hands in his pockets and smiles into the hug. She gave the best hugs.

"You got it wrong. They moved Checkers Day. Or well...they should. Because today is even better! It's...hold on..." He takes off his hat, holding it bottom up and concentrates for a moment. Then with a boom, a geyser of sparkles explodes out of the hat and then shakily forms the words 'Happy Marlow Appreciation Day!'.

Yes, he was very proud of that. Sparkles and showing he'd worked on fine control in order to get the letters right all in one.

No frog Marlows. She was too steeped in magic to succumb to a random transformation. Martin would have to exert a great deal of concentrated magic to force her out of her proper shape.

Marlow was properly and excessively appreciative of Martin's display. It was an impressive bit of magic and he manipulated it so well! "It's beautiful! You know how much I love sparkles!"

Which he was very grateful for. Other magic people always needed more effort to affect, and anyway, frog Marlow wouldn't be as fun.

"That's why I picked them!" He looked ridiculously happy that Marlow liked the effect. He'd worked real hard on it too. "And since it's Marlow Appreciation Day I brought a present!" Out of the hat which still had sparkles all around it, a rather ornate scroll slowly floated out.

"I made it fancy because it's a special occasion," he explained. "It's that giant fireball spell I put on your lightsaber when we ended up in that demon town!" It said something that that was considered a perfectly normal sentence for him.

"Oh!" She grinned like a kid on Christmas morning. "I can't wait to try it against more demons! I'll write down the lightsaber spell for you before you go so you can use it with your team." The perfectly normal sentence for him was perfectly normal for her. Dr. Strange influences were long lasting.

She motioned him to follow her. "Come on, you haven't seen my bungalow. How long can you stay? I have two bedrooms if you want to spend the night. The Asgardians are gone so we have the whole compound to do stuff. And the beach! We have a private beach for swimming."

Magic clearly wasn't just a power. It was a lifestyle.

"Really? That would be so cool. Lightsaber spells and I get to stay over! Though swimming sounds fun even if I haven't gone in...oh. I haven't ever gone since I got magic." He quickly followed after her, eager to see all of Marlow's cool place. "Well if the team needs me they'll call me. I sleep at the Sanctum half the time anyway. So I'm free to go anywhere! It's an official holiday today you know."

"We're easy to find if they need you."

She led him into her bungalow's first floor with the open living room, kitchen and the bedroom at the back. The second bedroom and bath were upstairs. The living room was filled with a large screen TV, hundreds of dvds and a cushy sofa to watch it all. Bean bags were piled in a corner for occasions that required a movie to be watched from the floor.

"Most of the kitchen staff has the night off because it's just me, Sydney and Zoey here. Dinner can be picked up at at the main house anytime, or we can go into Malibu and eat there. There are some really good burger places, but only if you want to try it." An official holiday was no excuse to make Martin suffer if he didn't want to be in public.

He looks around the place and goes exploring and peeking his head into rooms while she gives the tour. "You have a really cool place. It's big too. I bet you can test all sorts of spells in here."

He flops onto a bean bag to try it out and smiles up at her. "Who are those two? And what kind of dinner is at the main part tonight?" With other people he may have been a bit more shy about not choosing the in town option but with Marlow he knew she understood magic issues. "I like your place," he concludes finally as he shifts happily in the very comfortable bean bag. Maybe he should look into getting one for his room. Hmm.

"Thanks." Marlow flopped on the sofa. "It's big enough to practice spells but I like to do it outside. There's so much space and the others are really good about letting me have my practice time." Also, she practiced lethal spells and it was better to do those out in the open and away from people. Not that she'd had an accident in years, but it was important to be safe.

"Sydney is like the team mom. She makes things happen because none of us are very good about dealing with people. Zoey is her little girl. They live in the main house. Usually the chef makes some kind of pasta for me but she'll make anything we want."

"Lucky. My room at the HQ is too small for it so I do most of my testing in the gym or at the sanctum. If I want to do it outside I have to go search for a place. Is the beach good for spell testing?" He shifted some more in the bean bag, trying to get in the most comfortable position.

"They sound nice, you always need an Adult or Sane One on the team. Ours is Bea. But I'll have what you have for dinner. Food is important but there's a lot of stuff to do on Marlow Appreciation Day. Like magic checkers and lightsabers and beach time and exploring and seeing all the magic in LA and..." Well, the list goes on.

"We were lucky to get Sydney. The Asgardians got us kicked out of Disneyland for life, and we might've had to stay out of Anaheim altogether if she hadn't been able to calm things down. Knott's Berry Farm and Magic Mountain told us immediately they didn't want us there because of it. Although Disneyland said we could visit Disney Paris. I don't think they like the French."

"For life?!" He's ended up upside down lounging on the bean bag, finding it quite fun. "But you can still go by yourself right? I mean they won't recognize you if you're not with the team. Besides, you do really good illusions. But we can go somewhere other than Disneyland. Somewhere with more magic." Because that was half the fun of these adventures, following the magic.

"For life! But it's not really a magical place so I don't miss it. There aren't a lot of magical places in California. I think it's the sunshine. Oh! I'll introduce you to the ghost! The compound used to belong to a Hollywood star and she's still here. She thinks we don't have enough parties."

"Then doesn't it get boring here if there aren't many magical places around? There should be more." At the mention of the ghost he springs up. "Ooh! Our compound doesn't have a ghost. Let's go see her. Is she interesting?"

"It makes /me/ the most magical place around," she said with a grin. "There's a coven that keeps trying to get me to join, but you know what Dr. Strange always said. People playing at magic are more dangerous than the real thing, so I don't encourage them."

The ghost! "Her name is Sylvia. She was in the silent movies, but you couldn't tell by the way she can't shut up. I think she was really lonely here after she got old and sick. She wants us to have pool parties and not so many demon attacks. She'll come out later when it's dark. She says the sunlight is bad for her skin."

"Then it makes you the most fun part of California," he chuckled. "So I went to the best part of it on my first visit then!"

Oh, wannabe magics. Those were annoying. "Oh those kind of people. They're not even fun to fight because it just encourages them. Dr. Strange is right, besides you're way better at magic than all of them. Combined!" Which was probably why they wanted her but Marlow was just too good for them, Martin thought.

"Doesn't she know demon attacks are more interesting than pool parties? Besides, there's a beach! Some ghosts are so silly."

"I know! There's one at the Winchester House. She was crazy in life and now she can't accept that all her weird beliefs were wrong. She thought ghosts were chasing her and they really weren't interested. But that's for another visit sometime. You need to see the main house and meet Sydney if she's around."

"She's the one you made the demon-hunting car like right? With the strict speed limits?" He hops up to his feet and puts his hat back on, getting ready for the grand tour. "How big is this place? It looks really big. Like a superhero mansion! Do you have cool teammates here?"

"That's her! She's really great." She jumped to her feet as well. "C'mon!"

From her front door, the main house wasn't too far. Not worth a teleport when Martin wouldn't get to see the grounds that way.

"It's a whole fifteen acres. We have bungalows that most of the team live in and the main house, the beach and a pool, and some really awesome stuff underground that I don't go near. Your friend Anya would know all about it. Her dad owns it and had it made up for another team a long time ago."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]magic_hands
2012-10-01 01:35 am UTC (link)
He followed along eagerly after her, taking in the shear size of the whole place. "You have a beach and a pool? Lucky."

"I bet the underground awesome stuff is kind of like the stuff Anya has in her lab. Except she probably has more since she works there. I've only seen it a few times from the doorway because magic and tech stuff don't mix well and I don't want to mess up the boss's stuff." He's now on the look out for this tiger that has been mentioned once. "Wait, so Anya has our team and her dad pays yours? Wow they have a lot of teams."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]marlow

"I don't go down in the underground stuff unless I have to. Like for the gym because Svalin was teaching me how to use a sword and I still practice on my own. But not for the tech stuff. We have quinjets too, but I usually handle the travel arrangements when we're on a mission."

It was a few minutes, but they reached the side entrance into the big kitchen. "The Asgardians are all in Asgard right now. There's nobody else here right now. Sydney's usually in the office or the library."

"Like your lightsaber sword? It sounds useful! Nobody on my team uses a sword. Mostly guns. But I don't know if we have a jet because I usually just do the teleporting for everyone too. We're way faster than some plane anyway."

"So we have the whole place to ourselves?" Martin just grins because as cool as it would have been to meet the giant Asgardians, it was way cooler that they could go anywhere in the place and had all this space.

"They'll be back soon. They always come back." She took a few steps in and yelled "SYDNEY!"

"But yeah, all to ourselves. You'll have to come back when they're here so you can see some real sword practicing. They think my lightsaber is kind of silly and they use the real thing. Except theirs aren't magical and they can't throw spells with them."

Martin follows close behind as they go inside. "I don't know, I think yours sounds better. Real swords are cool but throwing spells with one is always better. If they could do that they would." Because in his head, everyone wished they could do magic.

He waits patiently for this Sydney to arrive and puts his hands in his pockets to be careful.

Yelling in the Defenders compound usually meant that something was going on and nine times out of ten it was bad.

Syd dropped the book she was reading and went rushing out of the library with a tiger on her heels.

It sounded like it had come from the kitchen and Syd rushed right there.

"What's going...." She stopped when she realized it wasn't an emergency. "Marlow?"

"Sydney!" The team adviser's expression made Marlow feel bad. She hadn't wanted to alarm her. It was only excitement on her part that had made her raise her voice. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. I wanted you to meet Martin. He was why there were alarms earlier. Martin, this is Sydney. She's our sane grownup."

"Hello, Martin. It's nice to meet you and yes that's a tiger. It's Hal's pet." She offered a hand to Martin.

Marlow immediately took Sydney's hand and lowered it so Martin wouldn't accidentally turn her into a nice frog. She loved Martin too much to let him get into trouble with Sydney so soon. There would be time enough with magical hijinks.

"Martin's my brother. He's really good with magic. He's the Thunderbolts sorcerer."

Martin had been standing there with his hat in his hands, wondering how to not seem rude by not shaking her hand. So Marlow dealing with that problem for him was a relief and she gets a thankful smile. "Nice to meet you too. Is the tiger nice?" He'd never met a tiger out of a zoo before.

At Marlow's introduction of him he nearly beams with pride. He wasn't perfect with magic but he was definitely good considering he'd only been doing it for a few years. "But Marlow is much better. And she has the best illusions.

The niceties of blood relationship wasn't important. They had magic, Dr. Strange and Clea to make them a family.

She put a hand on the tiger's head to show Martin that Eyhvatr was harmless to the household. "Martin's been studying with Dr. Strange for a long time. It's hard work and he did really well, so now he gets to use it to fight villains. Martin does boom magic and it's spectacular. Wait till you see the lights for Christmas!"

Martin didn't bother clarifying either. He didn't have blood family anymore but his magic one certainly counted as family. Besides, he loved having Marlow as a big sister.

Smiling at the tiger and waving, he kind of wishes he could pet it too. But he wanted the tiger to stay a tiger. "Oh. I'm here for...hold on a sec," he holds his hat steady as it begins to shake, looking like it was going to blow, until in a violent rupture an explosion of sparkles comes out to form the words 'Happy Marlow Appreciation Day'. This time the words were less shaky, practice made perfect. "Happy Marlow Appreciation Day," he said cheerfully out loud.

"I do time magic too. And our decorations for holidays are always the best, especially the fireworks." He sticks his hat back on while the sparkle effects stay. "Marlow said I could sleep over. May I?" One should always ask the permission of The Sane Adult for things.

Sydney wasn't too sure of what to make of fireworks for Christmas, but like everything else in her life things were strange and she'd roll with it.

Marlow laughed. "It's instead of a birthday because I don't have one," she explained. "Martin thinks I need a day to celebrate and sometimes he forgets and I get two or three in a year. But you should have a Sydney Appreciation Day too! You do so much for us that we need to celebrate it!"

Martin nods along, agreeing with the merits of the Appreciation Day idea. People needed those, especially if they didn't have a birthday.

"I'm very good at those! And when Marlow and I team up we have the best fireworks. Your Zoey can come watch, it'll be fun." Because the more the merrier on Marlow Appreciation Day. In his books it was an official holiday. Even if he arbitrarily decided the date of it each time.

Martin could never understand how fireworks could be unapproved. Really, who could not like fireworks? And theirs were magic so it was far more controlled. He was really looking forward to teaming up with Marlow for a fireworks display now.

He stays quiet to let Marlow handle the food decisions but gives a wide-eyed 'pleeeeease can we have double bacon extra cheeseburgers' look. Maybe it'd help the process along.
