One foot in front of the other.
The taxi pulled up alongside a huge gate and Summer hesitated a minute before she made herself step out of the car. As she leaned in the window to pay the fare it was on the tip of her tongue to ask to be returned to the city. Still, she had come this far and it would be pointless to turn back now. This was the first real opportunity she'd been given to do something new with her life. No one could exist forever on disappearing rabbits and card tricks. So she ignored the voice in her head telling her to turn back, paid the cab driver, and watched him drive away.

When she'd spoken to Kristoff the day before, Summer had thanked him profusely for his help and at the time she had been very excited. Now that she was there, something seemed so final about it. Maybe it was the gate and the wall. Or the enormous size of it all. This place was nothing like any she'd ever been before, and she'd been lots of places.

Before she buzzed the intercom to ask to be let in, she paused to look through the gate. It was a nice day out, for as late as it was getting in the year. There were even a few kids playing or lounging on the lawn. Teenagers never changed. No matter where she went, some things always stayed the same. Weekends were sacred, no matter what the weather channel threw at them.

Okay. Enough dithering. It was time to go inside. She squared her shoulders, pressed the button on the intercom, and waited for someone to answer.

"Nice to meet you, David." Another smile and another handshake. It hadn't occurred to her just how big the place was. She never thought she'd be meeting so many people at once. "Corey is showing me around and introducing me to all the interesting people."

David smiles a little. Blonds are less trouble than red heads so this is a nice bonus for the school in David's mind. Not that he will ever mention that.

He's happy to shake her hand. "Happy to meet you too. Yeah. There's a lot of people here kind of. But I like the grounds here. It's nice."

"I'll vouch for the quality of the dirt, anyway."

Summer laughed at Corey's vote for the literal grounds. It was a friendly laugh, though. She had been suitably impressed with his ability thus far.

"I haven't seen anything, yet, that would suggest it was anything but nice. Certainly all the people I've met so far have been."

David smirks a little. "Well it doesn't take anything to be polite Summer. I'm glad though that you like what you've seen so far. Wait until you meet Ms Grey though. She's pretty great teacher."

She'll never really be seen as an Aunt since he didn't grow up around her but she is nice.

Joe blushed a bit at the praise. "Nah, I'm nobody special. I'm not even a mutant, actually."

True, he was also technically the Professor's step-nephew, but he didn't much mind to bring it up.

"But you should like it here, Summer. They're good people."

"I hope so," Summer answered both Corey and Joe. Hopeful to get in and hopeful to make friends. That was something she needed to work on. If she wanted to keep them for more than a day, anyway.

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, guys." She smiled at all three of them.
